Fans of the band (and I am one) will find lots to enjoy about this book. And if those fans really like articles in music magazines (I don't necessarily), then they will like it even more as the book reads like a compilation of lots and lots of magazine articles about the band. Finally, if those fans also happen to be English, then I suspect they will like it even more. The book is written in English with lots of of English slang that escapes my American mind (no doubt, any Brit who just read that is already thinking up a clever slag response). I enjoyed the book because I enjoy the band, and there's lots of great information.

If you're a lover of Martin Gore and Andrew Fletcher who despises Alan Wilder and (to a lesser degree) Dave Gahan, you will probably love this book. I've read several books about the band and this one is far and away the most skewed and slanted of them all. To me a biography about any band should present the events and member statements in a way that allows the reader to form their own opinions. In Black Celebration, Steve Malins appears to have taken considerable time in picking and choosing quotes and stories that fit his own perception of the different members who make up Depeche Mode. While Martin (and Fletch) are presented as good natured, talented, kind people who've never hurt anyone; Dave and Alan (especially) are represented as the most judgmental, elitist, vain, arrogant, selfish, mean spirited, spiteful jerks you'd never want to meet. As if the quotes selected weren't enough, their lead-ins go even further to assure your opinion is a negative one. One example is a quote attributed to Dave from 1985 that starts off by saying "...he also seemed to have rather chauvinistic reasons..." In this instance, and MANY others, Malins seems to be editorializing more than reporting facts. It's as if he doesn't give the reader enough credit and wants to assure that they come to the same conclusions that he has. In doing so he's literally telling the reader how they should feel about someone or something before the story is even told.It's a curious book as a whole because if you didn't already know the ending you would think that the band had split up years ago after some huge falling out. Judging by the comments and quotes made about one another, you would assume that they would have told each other to drop dead many years ago. It seems rather odd for them to still be recording and touring to this day with the amount of disdain towards one another implied in Black Celebration. It's a real shame that an opportunity to tell such an interesting story has been wasted with this book. The actual facts of the 30+ year history of this band and all of its members (past and present) make for a fascinating enough tale without the yellow journalism found in the pages of this book. There are more than enough funny, touching, enlightening, and at times, even disturbing moments in the life of this band to make any book on the subject an enjoyable read. Unfortunately this book lowers itself close to the level of the trashy "unauthorized" tell all biographies that are the tabloids of the book world. Because the subject of the book is Depeche Mode I've given it 1 star when in truth it deserves none.

I'm new to the DM world and I wanted something that would give me a good amount of info and detail on the band and it's member's. This was a great choice, and I can't wait to finish it.

I was convinced I was going to be a teacher. ~ Andrew FletcherA statement which shocks me so deeply and, perhaps, sums up why all the fans around the world are so attracted to Depeche Mode in the 80's, a time when industrialization ever expands and consumerism roaring nowhere. The time gave Depeche Mode so much inspiration in writing so many good lyrics like People are People, Everything Counts, Get the Balance Right etc.Like so many fans around the world, I was ever hooked by the eternal 'See You'; the pure electronic sound mixing Kraftwerk-like clarity with purposeful, teenage pop tunes and simple love lyrics. The sense of love impacted me so deeply that I never quit following Depeche Mode.A biography on the band, therefore, is a must read for everyone who loves Depeche Mode. However, so far, still no official biography was published. This edition, written by Steve Malins, who follows Depeche Mode's every album, most of the live shows until 1999, then seems to be the most complete, up-to-date and major work on the band.The book largely follows a chronological order, from the formation of the band in 1980 to the temporary suspension of recording and performance in 1999. To the surprise of many, the early hits coming from the albums 'Construction Time Again' and 'Some Great Reward', heavily influenced by the 'industrial music', appeal to both the intellectual left-wing and the mechanized attitude extreme right wing group.Mind you, this book is really 'independently' written by Steve, as the members of the group cautiously distant themselves from endorsing this book. Many 'facts' are figured out by the author through interview with the third parties (e.g. other new-romantics music band like Spanda Ballet, Culture Club, OMD etc., friends close to the band and those who worked for them), newspaper clippings, music commentaries, shows critics, album reviews, etc. The lack of originality and first-hand information poses a real problem. And the lack of an appendix hurts even more.On the other hand, this kind of amateur-ship did permit a revelation of many behind-the-scene secrets, relationship among the band members, their friends and family members, the record company Mute and its boss Daniel Miller, who is the single most important figure in the history of the band. Characterization of the band's members pulls along the story as every albums, singles, and tours around the world are covered. I can say that this is the most complete 20-years story about DM in one book.'This is the story of the mutations, perfections and tragedies of Depeche Mode.' (UK edition)As quoted at the back of the book, the writer does not intend to glorify DM. The dark, gloomy side of DM was revealed as in the city nightlife of Berlin, where the band enjoyed the most successful career before moving to America. Deterministic, existentialist, DM's 'Construction Time Again was even described by left-wing columnist as virtually a rewrite of the Communist Manifesto. The social-caring perspective was brought about by simple and unpretending music and lyrics.In the book, you can find Martin Gore a gay, son of a black American; Andrew Fletcher a too-sensitive, nervous-breaking who holds a special friendship with Martin, Dave Gahan a drug addict and Alan Wilder a talented but an uneasy man within the band. If you like a lot of Mexican dishes you will like this book. The author even states she loves Mexican cooking and this cookbook reflects that love. If you are looking for a variety of meals, look for a different book. I ended up giving this cookbook to Goodwill. If you are looking for an all around Rotisserie Chicken cookbook get Betty Crockers's "Dinner made easy with Rotisserie Chicken". Not only does Betty give you recipes using rotisserie chicken, but she gives you easy, complete dinner menus including recipes for side dishes and dessert. I have loved every recipe I've tried from my Betty Crocker cookbook. I am always looking for new ways to use leftover rotisserie chicken and I hoped this book would be a nice addition to my Betty Crocker recipes. There were not enough recipes in this book that I would actually make and not worth me keeping.

This book is so creative! I bought it because we eat a LOT of chicken and I needed more ways to make it. There is something for everyone in this book - every kind of cuisine and meal you could ever think of. The recipes are easy to make and easy to understand, and the photographs make the dishes jump off the pages!Cheater tip - if you have leftover chicken (even if it's not rotisserie) you can use it in these recipes! I used some leftover plain shredded chicken breasts in the mashed potato casserole and it was delicious. My daughter, who hates mashed potatoes and will never even try them, licked her plate clean!

BEST COOKBOOK EVER TO OWN!!! Even if you don't need a recipe for all of the items in here, it's all about the IDEAS!!!! I've made so much stuff from this book either following the recipe precisely or just getting the idea and then taking off from there. The recipes are easy to follow, simple ingredients. This is for a beginner cook as well as an advanced - because there are just some nights when a gourmet meal is not in the cards.

Not all of these recipes are appealing to me but enough are, that I am glad to have it on hand. We love our Costco rotisserie chickens and the more ways we can use them, the better.

Great cookbook for anyone looking for more ways to use chicken. Even though its focus is on rotisserie, you could easily sub in roasted or baked in many of these meals. Just use your best judgement. Every recipe is easy to follow, using mostly pantry ingredients, and is accompanied by a gorgeous photo. I've already made the Spinach Artichoke French Bread Pizza, Broccoli and Rice Casserole, and French Spaghetti - all wonderful. Winner winner, chicken dinner!

I already owned a cookbook for rotisserie chicken but was getting tired of the recipes and went with this book! Yes yes yes! Different recipes! And so so delicious! My favorite is the pasta bake with cheese and spinach ravioli! Yes yum yum!!!

Fantastic cookbook! I have already used a few of the recipes and they are great. Getting those cooked chickens at Sams is so economical, and these recipes are easy and can be pretty cheap to make. Thanks for all the great ideas!

Hunter S. Thompson is just fun to read. He has a style that so many people have tried to replicate but no one else can match his rhythm and vivid imagery. It's so amazing that years after the fact, you can dive right in and feel what it is to know the Hell's Angels at their most infamous. If you are easily offended, this may not be the book for you, but if you want a little adventure out of your comfort zone, it really is a good read.

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" isn't Hunter S. Thompson's best work, this is. With deeper roots in reality, this is the true dawn of Gonzo Journalism. The Fear-and-Loathings take the Gonzo concept off-the-charts and are more an amusing romp or dark commentary. This is journalism rooted in first-hand experience, slightly twisted by a fine mind and writer of the first calibre.

This is a report on a marginalized American subculture, written by an expert on American subcultures. I'd read Hell's Angels many years ago, around the time it first came out, and I decided to read it again after a friend told me that it's one of the best books about current (2018) American society. My friend was right. Hunter S. Thompson was both a keen observer/analyst and a superb journalist. Hell's Angels is a great story, full of timeless insights.

I came to this book via Susan McWilliams Dec 15, 2016 article in The Nation, "This Political Theorist Predicted the Rise of Trumpism. His Name Was Hunter S. Thompson." In it, she posits that Thompson intimately portrays the sort of self-destructive nihilism that rises among those whom the economy and society have cast aside - those who find "the game" completely rigged against them. All of that is there, and, for good measure, Thompson also skewers lemming-like media hype, the over-reaction, strategic conflation, and exaggeration of some law enforcement agencies, and the cluelessness of a doe-eyed public. Beyond this seeming prescience (more like "the more things change, the more they stay the same"), it is a good, ugly read.

And I do. Years ago, I read most all of Hunter Thompson's books, but I missed this one. I always intended to get around to it but it always got put on the back-burner.Well, having recently been a fan of the FX TV show Sons of Anarchy, and after finding this book in the garage after a cleaning frenzy, I decided it was time.On the good side -I found myself cracking up every few pages. This book is not nearly as laugh-out-loud as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, or Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, but it's still got its moments. There are also horrifying moments to be sure, but he manages to slip in an observation or a description that is vintage Thompson.I found the book very interesting, and he not only talks about the Hell's Angels from the time he was with them (1965-66), but he educates us about the history of that group and other biker gangs. They essentially started when WWll vets returned home, and Hunter goes on to explain the origin of the 1% ers - the outlaw motorcyclists that are at odds with the AMA (the American Motorcycle Association.)I have read some criticism that Hunter mythologizes this group as heroes, and I certainly didn't get that impression from this book. Thompson does humanize many of the bikers with nicknames straight out of Bad Guy central casting, but I never saw this as his being reverential to them. In fact, especially in the later chapters, he goes on to explain why he feels they are the "losers" in society, banded together with an allegiance only to each other and with the knowledge that they live in the here and now because their future is so unknowable and bleak.Thompson also does a good job of showing how the media is more to blame for the group's barbarian image, than their actual exploits. Mind you, Thompson certain details examples of violence and savagery that would scare anyone and earn them their reputation - but the media's exaggeration of some of the more well-known events only served to make them famous. They became every decent citizen's scary boogeymen, and they achieved a certain cachet or prestige just because of that.So is the book dated? In some ways, it is. This is certainly not 1965, and MC gangs like the Hell's Angels don't have the press or attention they used to get. Yet, I still found the book so interesting, and Thompson has a way of describing the type of marginalized personality that gravitates to this type of lifestyle in a way that's relevant today.

Very interesting read and probably not the kind of read you might thinking it would be. Hunter in his usual flair tells a story about a group of people that nobody else would have probably been able to deliver on. If you know or remember anything about the Hells Angels you will want to read this book.

Hunter was a great, wild, crazy journalist/writer. I encourage anyone who likes a unique view of life, history, and commentary to read any/all of his books. Funny, serious, insane, and gonzo!

Weird and provocative. Hunter's books have staying power.

I am not even a dog owner but there were many things in My Boy, Ben that touched me. The author's ability to see "little graces" and Big Grace as a result of his experience with Ben was very inspirational. I plan on giving this book to several of my friends who have recently lost pets but the book will have an impact on anyone who struggles or has suffered a loss in life and I guess that would be just about everyone. Someone once said that God speaks to each of us a bit differently hoping that we will tell one another. David Wheaton has shared his story and Ben's very well.

This is a very compelling story. I don't own a dog and have no desire to own one, but this is a story of a special relationship between a man and his dog that anyone can appreciate. I thought the book was very well written. It is a book that I have given as a gift to various close friends and clients and the response has been nothing but positive. I am grateful that the author David Wheaton was willing to share such a personal story that is far more than just the special relationship between he and his dog Ben. It truly is a story of Love, Loss and Grace. This is that type of book that is for everyone. Thanks again to the author David Wheaton.
