My conversion as a dog owner took place almost immediately after Ben came home. Here I thought I was getting a dog to find and flush pheasants during the fall hunting season in the Upper Midwest. Confirming that intention was the outdoor dog run that had been constructed in our yard in anticipation of his arrival. “Dogs live outside,” after all. At least that is where our family dogs had always lived, for as long as I could remember. Ben was different, much different. He would never spend a night in that pen. In fact, it was soon dismantled and removed, which provided the first clue that I had changed. Or rather, that I had been changed simply by the presence of a different kind of dog that didn't demand in-house residence but rather just seemed to belong there.It didn't take long for me to realize that I had received something far more than “a dog.” Rather, I had been blessed with a year-round, life-enriching relationship that would expand my boundaries of joy and sorrow and help me understand poignant lessons about life and faith.This is the story of my boy Ben. I am not even a dog owner but there were many things in My Boy, Ben that touched me. The author's ability to see "little graces" and Big Grace as a result of his experience with Ben was very inspirational. I plan on giving this book to several of my friends who have recently lost pets but the book will have an impact on anyone who struggles or has suffered a loss in life and I guess that would be just about everyone. Someone once said that God speaks to each of us a bit differently hoping that we will tell one another. David Wheaton has shared his story and Ben's very well.

This is a very compelling story. I don't own a dog and have no desire to own one, but this is a story of a special relationship between a man and his dog that anyone can appreciate. I thought the book was very well written. It is a book that I have given as a gift to various close friends and clients and the response has been nothing but positive. I am grateful that the author David Wheaton was willing to share such a personal story that is far more than just the special relationship between he and his dog Ben. It truly is a story of Love, Loss and Grace. This is that type of book that is for everyone. Thanks again to the author David Wheaton.
