Jack trades his goat for magic beans, to the great and predictable ire of his mother, who flings the beans around with the usual results. The beanstalk grows, Jack climbs, and here the version departs from the traditional one: at the top of the beanstalk sits a little old woman who tells Jack that the giant stole his fortune from Jack's father. While this does give a motive for Jack's theft, part of the charm of the original story is the protagonist's meld of fool and rapscallion. There's no "Fee Fi Fo Fum" here, no magic harps, or golden egg-laying chickens?only a money bag. Too bad about the text, because the illustrations are charming. Ballester's style is reminiscent of that of Victoria Kahl, Wendy Watson, and Lois Lenski?rounded and clean-lined, with a pleasing sense of volume. The limited palette?gold, sepia, deep blue, burgundy, dark green, black, and white?is eye-catching. Composition, whether in full-page or small illustrations, is balanced and attractive. Certainly, the pictures and the fact that the text is well translated into Spanish could provide an impetus for purchase. However, Steven Kellogg's Jack and the Beanstalk (Morrow, 1991) or Gail Haley's variant, Jack and the Fire Dragon (Crown, 1988) have zippier story lines and are likewise stylishly illustrated. The story line is a bit different from the version I'm accustomed to. This one has Jack selling a goat, a lady at the top of the bean stalk tells jack the gold belonged to his father and was stolen by the giant and at the end the magical lady gets rid of the stalk with the touch of her wand. There is no Fe Fi Fo Fum, etc either. Still a good story, just a different version.

We have several from this series. They are beautiful -- photos and text lay-out -- and in very high-quality paper. This would make a lovely gift, or a hand-me-down sort of book for the home (I'm inclined to keep ours for my kids' kids).

The story wasn't exactly the way I remembered it, but the translation was well-done and the illustrations were interesting. I learned some new words in Spanish.

The book was delivered promptly and in excellent shape. Many thanks to this excellent vender.

Like you may assume, this is a retelling of the classic fairy tale in English and Spanish. The translations are pretty accurate, so if that's your concern, you can go ahead and get this book.What I didn't like was that the story was much more condensed from how I remembered it. I realize that everyone's entitled to tweak the story a little bit, but a lot of critical parts in the story are missing. While Jack does get some magical beans and climbs the stalk, not much activity occurs between the time he spots the giant and escapes with the money. It doesn't seem like an adequate story since the adventure at the top of the beanstalk has been reduced to a mere couple of sentences. It's true that very young children might not notice that a big detail in the story is gone, but I'm sure there are better versions of the story out there. Unfortunately most of those other versions aren't presented in both English and Spanish.

A condensed Jack and Beanstalk story in English and Spanish. Great for a quick bedtime story for little ones, for young readers who speak both languages, or are learning one or the other. But the best memory I have of this book is that it introduced me to Arnal Ballester, the illustrator. Here he's limited to a few characters (still great), but seek him out and you'll find a body of work that will leave your mind glowing.

I thought this was going to be a book to help you understand the headings, acronyms, footnotes, etc., that are used in the charts and tables of the Machinery's Guide -- not a mathematics textbook.

The book was in great condition but I couldn't find in the description, the size of the book. Was very disappointed that it's a very small book, about 4x6.

This book is part of the background material for a short story. It adds reality to this Sci-Fi story.

This isn't a great deal on the Machinery's Handbook. This is a potentially useful guide to the tables and formulas. Make sure that is what you want and you will be happy, otherwise a tad disappointed.

'Fire-Hot Aunt Vol. 1' by Katsuki Izumi is a manga about a young man attending school with his beautiful same-age aunt.Toru's mother and grandmother both got pregnant at the same time. That means Toru's aunt Sugako is the same age as him. When they end up in the same high school, trouble happens. Sugako only sees Toru as her cute adorable nephew at the age of about 6. Toru doesn't like his aunt treating him with familial affection, especially in front of Mochida, the girl he has a crush on. Toru's aunt has some other weird qualities: she's amazingly good at hitting home runs in softball, really doesn't like people calling her old, and is secretly a mythological creature.At first, I wasn't sure about the idea of the premise, but I didn't have anything to worry about. The art is fun, as are the stories. I liked this comedy of errors with a supernatural element.I received a review copy of this manga from Akita Publishing Co. Ltd. and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this manga.

fun little read.only issue is a fair number of the pages are missing a 1/4 inch of the bottom of the page. it's only an issue on 3-4 pages where a word or two of dialogue is in the cutoff part bit but is minor.

I am really enjoying the story so far! I can't wait to read the next chapters, going to be a interesting run!

Updated review: Still a must for anyone seriously interested in healthcare simulation. I don't think any single book in this field can truly be "comprehensive", but this book certainly is far-ranging, and includes chapters on simulation in many medical specialties. Note that this book is targeted more to medical education, although it retains a systems focus. There is much of value here for educators of other healthcare disciplines, but simulation books seem to be proliferating, particularly those targeting nurses.I like this book a lot, but at my current state of grappling with the practical problems of getting a hospital simulation program going my favorite book is Palaganas JC, et al's Defining Excellence in Simulation Programs. Still, healthcare simulation is so dynamic and expansive that I find myself turning more to the primary literature more.The formatting of the Kindle version is much improved and is now quite readable.

A great book that describes the state of the art from the perspective of medical experts, but unfortunately it does not comprise experts from the discipline of M&S as well. This leaves the focus on the application domain, which is like looking only at the spokes of a wheel without understanding the hub: something is missing. But the application domains are covered well.

Excellent extremely comprehensive. Well written easy to read. Must have for sim educators. Great resource to have for new and advanced.
