From Publishers Weekly
While these books' juxtaposition of English and Spanish texts may fill a need, the undistinguished retellings of familiar tales may deem the titles more suited to adult admirers of Spanish artist Ballester's sophisticated, minimalist paintings. Unfortunately, the pictures lack the kind of details and humor that appeal to young readers (e.g., the sloppy visual inconsistencies in Goldilocks: in one illustration, the bears' alleged little, medium and big bowls are virtually all the same size; and the heroine's gravity-defying locks are only sometimes goldenAother times beige). The illustrations in Jack and the Beanstalk are stronger; one especially noteworthy painting shows Jack's perspective from atop the beanstalk as the fields beneath him stretch out in patches and stripes. The uninspired narratives, however, aren't likely to engage either beginning readers or a read-aloud audienceAand fairy tale fans are likely to grouse about Goldilocks breaking the chair before she eats the porridge rather than traditional tellings that reverse the acts. Kindergarten-Grade 2?Charming illustrations are matched with a pedestrian, laundered text in this bilingual version of the familiar story. Jack trades his goat for magic beans, to the great and predictable ire of his mother, who flings the beans around with the usual results. The beanstalk grows, Jack climbs, and here the version departs from the traditional one: at the top of the beanstalk sits a little old woman who tells Jack that the giant stole his fortune from Jack's father. While this does give a motive for Jack's theft, part of the charm of the original story is the protagonist's meld of fool and rapscallion. There's no "Fee Fi Fo Fum" here, no magic harps, or golden egg-laying chickens?only a money bag. Too bad about the text, because the illustrations are charming. Ballester's style is reminiscent of that of Victoria Kahl, Wendy Watson, and Lois Lenski?rounded and clean-lined, with a pleasing sense of volume. The limited palette?gold, sepia, deep blue, burgundy, dark green, black, and white?is eye-catching. Composition, whether in full-page or small illustrations, is balanced and attractive. Certainly, the pictures and the fact that the text is well translated into Spanish could provide an impetus for purchase. However, Steven Kellogg's Jack and the Beanstalk (Morrow, 1991) or Gail Haley's variant, Jack and the Fire Dragon (Crown, 1988) have zippier story lines and are likewise stylishly illustrated. Brock Cole's The Giant's Toe (Farrar, 1986) provides an offbeat slant to the familiar story that will give children much to think about.?Ann Welton, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, WACopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The story line is a bit different from the version I'm accustomed to. This one has Jack selling a goat, a lady at the top of the bean stalk tells jack the gold belonged to his father and was stolen by the giant and at the end the magical lady gets rid of the stalk with the touch of her wand. There is no Fe Fi Fo Fum, etc either. Still a good story, just a different version.
We have several from this series. They are beautiful -- photos and text lay-out -- and in very high-quality paper. This would make a lovely gift, or a hand-me-down sort of book for the home (I'm inclined to keep ours for my kids' kids).
The story wasn't exactly the way I remembered it, but the translation was well-done and the illustrations were interesting. I learned some new words in Spanish.
The book was delivered promptly and in excellent shape. Many thanks to this excellent vender.
Like you may assume, this is a retelling of the classic fairy tale in English and Spanish. The translations are pretty accurate, so if that's your concern, you can go ahead and get this book. What I didn't like was that the story was much more condensed from how I remembered it. I realize that everyone's entitled to tweak the story a little bit, but a lot of critical parts in the story are missing. While Jack does get some magical beans and climbs the stalk, not much activity occurs between the time he spots the giant and escapes with the money. It doesn't seem like an adequate story since the adventure at the top of the beanstalk has been reduced to a mere couple of sentences. It's true that very young children might not notice that a big detail in the story is gone, but I'm sure there are better versions of the story out there. Unfortunately most of those other versions aren't presented in both English and Spanish.
A condensed Jack and Beanstalk story in English and Spanish. Great for a quick bedtime story for little ones, for young readers who speak both languages, or are learning one or the other. But the best memory I have of this book is that it introduced me to Arnal Ballester, the illustrator. Here he's limited to a few characters (still great), but seek him out and you'll find a body of work that will leave your mind glowing.
