I had bought this a number of months ago but just read it. This book is a total eye-opener!! I didn't realize how much I DIDN'T know about Social Security, how it works, how it's funded, etc. I also believed some of the myths about it's going broke and needing to be fixed by lowering benefits. The distinction between it being wage INSURANCE versus being some welfare program is important -- and I do now hate the term "entitlement"! But the biggest shock was reading about the 30-year long effort that rich cats (and their rich offspring) have been waging to slander and destroy the program, and how close they recently came to getting their way! It is beyond me to understand how people who are so fortunate in being well-off can be so uncaring and intent on stealing the subsistence-level support that many elderly and disabled depend on! We need to spread the truth of what is happening and why. Wake up before it's too late!

I was expecting a book on the Unites States solely but was pleasantly surprised! The first half of the book goes into depth the creation and lure of trans Atlantic crossings and Gibbs himself. I had no idea Gibbs accomplished so much. You see his work all the time in documentaries but his name is rarely mentioned.The Author does a superb job with his writing and telling of history. He has a gift for writing and was enjoyable to read.The cruise ship industry will never be the same. Yes there are a few boutique cruises which attempt to change current trends, most are these bloated top heavy ugly ships catering to shopping and all you can eat and hitting these ports catering to 100% tourism for the 1 hour stop over.The SS United States represents the end of an era and the pride a country can have.Thank you Steven Ujifusa for writing this great book and preserving the legacy of Willie Gibbs and the SS United States. I hope in my lifetime I get to tour the ship before she is scrapped.

I have been a fan of S.S. United States ever since first seeing her docked on the west side of Manhattan in her prime, and more recently, as a rusting hulk on the Philadelphia waterfront. This was a magnificent vessel created by a man who wanted to create a technological icon to the country. At a time of international maritime rivalry to establish the fastest passenger liner across the Atlantic, the United States shattered all previous records, and has yet to be beaten by any large passenger ship. Her demise, as well as those of her competing magnificent vessels (such as Queen Mary), can be attributed to economics and jet aircraft. Queen May is a hotel/museum in Long Beach California; United States sits rusting at a Philadelphia wharf, uncertain of her future.The creator of this magnificent vessel was prominent American marine architect, William Francis Gibbs. The ship was a dream of his some thirty years before her completion. Gibbs was as much of a story as the ship itself and the author weaves an interesting story intertwining the two. Anyone with doubts about America's future should read this book. It's not political tract, but an enthralling story about teamwork, ingenuity, persistence, and one of those quirky American individuals, William Francis Gibbs, who built the S.S. United States, the fastest and most beautiful ocean liner in the world. Along the way, Gibbs also designed and organized production of 70 percent of the U.S. naval ships in World War II. This is a true story and it happened not too long ago.William Francis Gibbs was an introverted boy from a newly rich Philadelphia family that lost most of its wealth in the first decade of the last century. Young Willy fell in love with ships at age eight when he stood on the banks of the Delaware River and saw the gleaming new steamship, St.Louis. He is a protagonist you admire and care about. Among his more endearing qualities is that he became a Harvard drop-out. Gibbs would lock himself in his room to study engineering drawings of ships, ignoring his coursework and not mingling with his rich, more social classmates.Throughout his life Gibbs remained an oddball, but became a central figure in the American achievement in the first half of the 20th century (his picture was on the cover of TIME in 1942). Ujifusa's book is worth reading simply for its portrait of that period. There are priceless vignettes. Gibbs and his brother, both in their late 20s, meeting with J.P. Morgan Jr. in his Wall Street office to show him their drawings and get money for the ships they wanted to build. A young army captain from Kansas, Dwight D. Eisenhower, sipping tea in a fancy New York apartment, lobbying the head of the U.S. shipping commission for space on a converted ocean liner in order to get his tank battalion over to the European front. Gibbs hauled before a Congressional committee during World War II, accused of war profiteering and, with complete vindication, getting the committee to back down.Ujifusa wonderfully captures not just Gibbs and his place in history, but the ship itself. He rightfully calls the S.S. United States a masterpiece, and describes in lucid, beautifully-written detail all that went into it. To this day, it stands as a tribute not just to the genius of Gibbs, but to American technology, organization and competitive will. Early in his career, Gibbs had come to believe in the superiority of the smaller, higher speed turbines developed by GE and Westinghouse. He had applied American mass-production techniques, including a wide range of off-site suppliers, to quickly and inexpensively churn out cargo ships in World War II. The S.S. United States could only have been produced in America. Ujifusa's account of the ship's maiden voyage in 1952, when it shattered the Queen Mary's trans-Atlantic record by 10 hours (in a three and a half day voyage), is one of the most thrilling in the annals of competition.As in the best of stories, A Man and His Ship is about more than inevitable triumph. There is the financial failure of Gibb's father. Going to sea has always involved risk, and often tragedy. Mr. Ujifusa's narrative includes the impact of the Titanic disaster, and he describes the horrific fire on the ocean liner Morro Castle off the New Jersey coast in 1934 that killed 136 people. Commerce and shipbuilding went into decline during the Great Depression. Gibbs had fierce battles with Washington throughout his career.He was a difficult personality. In the late 1990s I had the privilege--and pain--of working with Steve Jobs. In reading Ujifusa's portrait of William Francis Gibbs, I thought, "He's like Steve." Gibbs hired a talented team of New York designers for the elegant interior of the S.S. United States, but he insisted on okaying "every piece of furniture, bolt of drapery and square foot of carpet." He would go to the New Jersey Meadowlands with a tuning fork to make sure he had just the right pitch for the ship's whistles. Thank goodness America produces people like that and provides them freedom and resources to do great things.

I grew up in NY City at the end of the era of the great ocean liners. Whenever I drove down the West Side Highway I would search for the beautiful ships that docked there, most especially the "Big U," SS United States. The very first book I bought, in 1953, was about this ship. Ujifusa has created a memorable portrait of this phenomenal technological achievement, and of the enigmatic and driven man who designed and built her, William Francis Gibbs. It is at once historically accurate and emotionally compelling, a literary effeort to be proud of. Perhaps no one but a man like Gibbs could have built the greatest ocean liner of them all, and had he not lived, it never would have happened. The Big U is the apical achievment not only of the 1950's, but in terms of marine architecture, of all time. Nothing has surpassed her, and nothing ever will. That she is sitting at her moorings in Philadelphia today, rusting away, is not only a crime but an insult to the memory of her designer and the thousands of people who built her. Ujifusa has done a great service to America by writing the story in such a readable and entertaining, moving way.

Very well written, the book completely engaged me in its portrait of an unusually driven man from an era now gone. There is a certain lingering sadness to the tale, which chronicles the search for perfection in a system, and a culture, which was about to be swept away by new technology after only seventeen years of service. But the book is all about the excitement of that chase for perfection and in portraying that the book succeeds very well.

I love this book! It is exactly what I was looking for. I have enjoyed trying to do some hand letter designs and decided to make it my summer hobby. The book has tutorials that are short and to the point. It teaches you one technique and you can spend as much time practicing as you want before creating your "final piece" at the end of the tutorial. There's only one practice page for each tutorial which is fine by me because I didn't want to buy a book with a ton of blank pages...I can use a notebook to practice. I like the final piece page because it's almost like a test for myself before moving on to the next tutorial. This book is thick and covers tons of stuff. At the end it even has a tutorial on how to digitize your work. As a beginner this is exactly what I was hoping to find.

This book was so absolutely worth the money! I've found that hand lettering really is a relaxing hobby, and while I originally planned to learn it for my bullet journaling, I can see myself being able to use Amy's techniques in a variety of different situations. My intention was to learn a lesson a day, but I ended up zooming through the book the first night I had it. Now I'm going back through to take it a little more slowly, and I know that it won't be the last time I do so.Unlike a lot of lettering books, there aren't a ton of blank pages--I know it's annoying to get a book and realize it's mostly scratch paper. You'll get a nice walkthrough for each lesson consisting of a few pages each, and then a page afterward to practice on. I feel too wrong to write in my book, so I just use an extra notebook. :)I recommend this book so highly, and I can't stop bragging about it. You won't be disappointed in the least.

Amy created a beautiful hand lettering book. The book is made with quality paper and the book opens flat, so you can write comfortably on each page. Each of the lessons are well written and have step by step directions. There are also drawings to color on every page. Fun book, just hit that buy button!

This is a perfect book for a beginner in lettering and simple art. The book's preview of "Look Inside" gives an accurate feel for the entire book. The book is printed on thick stock and it is well bound, meaning it will hold together but you can also completely open the book without having to use a paperweight. I am new to lettering and it gives exactly what I need. It explains how to mix different types of fonts, how to blend colors together for font, how to place various words (such as curving some words while leaving other words straight), how to write in numerous font styles, how to create watercolor backgrounds, how to make monograms, how to overlap text, how to digitize your work and how to do some basic drawing. Again, if you are an established artist or calligrapher, this book is too basic for you. For a beginner, it is a wonderful, fun, non-intimidating introduction book. Personally, I like the pages best that weren't part of the preview. However, as I mentioned, the entire book is at the skill-level you can preview. So, if you like the preview, I think you'll like the book. If you're not "wowed" by the preview, you probably won't like the book.

I pre-ordered this book and am so excited to finally receive it. I've take a mini-workshop on hand lettering, before, but had trouble picking it up in such a short amount of time. I like that I can work at my own pace using this book and that there are practice spaces provided throughout the hefty workbook. Ms. Latta has written and demonstrated easy to understand directions and I was able to accomplish the first lesson easily and (I think) pretty successfully! I look forward to working my way through this book and have already recommended it to a friend!

I have been so excited to receive this book written by one of my favorite creators! And it did not dissapoint! This book is soooo legit. First thing I noticed was the heftiness; it's not a wimpy mini book. The pages are quality thickness. The next thing, and most important, the content is extremely well organized. It is definitely a comprehensive intro into hand lettering but goes beyond an introduction and dives into some good nitty gritty. It is very accessible to various skill levels.On top of all of that delicious goodness, there is room to practice on beautifully designed pages. This will absolutely be my go-to book for myself and will be my go-to gift for the foreseeable future. It is nice to purchase something that totally and completely exceeds my expectations (and they were set pretty high because Amy Latta is very talented.)

I love, love, love this book! It is great for a beginner like me! I wanted to make my Bible journaling look more professional. (My handwriting is terrible!) And this book has some fun, easy techniques for improving my lettering! Plus it has ideas for shading and doodles, too! If you want to make your lettering look nicer, then this is a great tool! She shows you a technique, and then you practice it and reproduce it on the next page. It's fun to see my progress, and I've already used the techniques in my Bible! :)

I LOVE this book. If you are truly looking for a way decompress and also to learn a new skill - this is it. Amy Latta's book not only offers a lot of different lettering looks, but she also teaches you how to draw banners, arrows,swirls, laurel wreaths, and just about anything else you need to feel like you are a super crafty person. I have always been frustrated by not being able to draw, but she really breaks things down intelligently to teach you how to do things in a way that makes sense (at least to my brain). It has been a joy to sit down every night and practice and feel like I have learned and mastered something because of her thoughtful instruction. I have looked at a number of other lettering books, and I felt that this one was SO superior in the way that steps are broken down and explained clearly.

Not sure that this is really about the basics. Mr. Larsson seems to use a lot of jargon that, I believe, is unique to his own shop. Several other books out there that provide, in my opinion, more thorough and better-explained techniques. (Jim Trefethen's book comes to mind.)

The book covers some why boats are built in certain ways and a smaller amount of how they are built. However the in-depth coverage of wooden boat restoration is severely lacking. This book will not tell you how to evaluate repairs nor does it go into alternate methods of repair

So much information and advice. I will keep this by me as I go to work on my boat repair.

good book for simple projects , read it all in just one day .. will be a must before starting

Another HOME RUN in this series!I caught a couple of typos in this one that made following the reading a little difficult, but the book is very informative, with clear and concise directions and a step-by-step guide that is easy to follow. I didn't feel overwhelmed by a wave of jargon that is typical in a lot of books on the subject. But at the same time, I didn't feel like I was reading Coding for Dummies.This was a very practical approach to instruction that I appreciate and can fully understand. After reading this book I could see where I was and how far I had come in understanding JavaScript!

This is a great guide for beginners. The author really spells out the concepts and commands in a way that is easy to understand. There is a brief history on JavaScript and how it was developed and named. There is also a lot of information on the benefits you can get from using JavaScript to program. There are a lot of terms and ideas in this book that are new to me, as I am just a beginner, but I feel like I have a much better understanding of the process now. I will be using this book as a reference in the future!

Javascript is a valuable programming language with a large array of uses. It is practical, efficient, and most importantly can be modified easily. No matter what you want to learn or to do in future it will be your greatest asset and the best reference point for the future programming.I have learning javascript for more than a year now and i still believe and i know nothing at all java-script gives me that much freedom and limitless opportunity. My younger brother is also likes javascript and i have purchased this book for him i really believe this book will help him to get introduced with the javascript properly and be familiar with javascript coding and programming. Very much appreciated and recommended for every beginners as well as advanced users.

This book provided a step-by-step guide in learning programming which is definitely designed for beginners. What I appreciate from this book is the idea of learning by doing through the practical examples given. This book also contains a brief history of javascript, features, uses, ways to write, and a lot about javascript.

This is the first book in a series. It is an ideal informative read. Throughout the book, Nathan gives plenty of examples and explains things well. This is the best JavaScript book I have ever browsed so far. Clearly, Nathan is an expert and I have no hesitation in recommending his book. I received this as a free download. Recommend choice.

Lots of information here, but no real writing. It's difficult to tell when the author is deliberately writing bad code or has not caught a typo in proofreading. Every time I got to a section that proposed to explain a question I had wondered about, I left more confused than I started.

I opened the book in the Kindle app on my tablet and then walked through the exercises on my computer. Everything was clear and easy to follow. At no point did I get "lost". This is really a great introduction to JavaScript. If you think you might want to gain expertise with this important computer tool, this is an easy (and inexpensive) way to test your aptitude.

I found this to be a great introduction to JavaScript. The programming is presented in an easy to understand format and is well written. I have read another of Nathan's books and found he has a great talent for teaching new things with easy to follow examples.
