Purchased for lunches - was intrigued by the variety of types, salads, grains bowls, rice bowls, meats and pictures are great. We have worked through about half the book so far and have not really enjoyed most of them. Probably won't make any of them a second time. Portions are often too large and many are a bit bland or out of balance. Thick "sauces" in bottom of jar are a bit hard to retrieve although a couple have been tasty (ex. Mediteranean rice bowl ). There are better versions of a few recipes in other books.

Some of the soups are not good as a minute made lunch, such as the Asian Vegetable and Tofu Soup? It tasted bad because the flavors didn't have time to combine, so be careful which you choose to take or you'll end up stuck having to buy something or go without. I suggest trying it at home first.

Overall great ideas ...however it would have been nice to have more pictures of the recepes.

This is a great meals in jars recipe book. I've enjoyed making lunches and dinners on Sundays that I can eat for several days throughout the week. Well worth the purchase price and a good addition to any modern cook book library.

I was looking for meals I can pack for my diabetic husband to carry to work, where he is not allowed to use the (communal???) fridge to store his lunch. I can easily fit a mason jar and some freeze packs in his tote. This book has dozens of ideas for salads and other totables he can eat, and not just a table of x amount dressing on the bottom, then add y amount of hard veggies (select from table), top with z amount of soft veggies (again, select from table) and cover. It also includes about how long the recipes will hold in the fridge if packed according to their guidelines. I am really looking forward to using it. Only four stars because I don't yet know how many of the recipes will actually work.

The majority of the recipes were for one serving. Although one can multiply the amounts called for in the recipe, it seems to be a needless task. I was simply not prepared for a cookbook which featured 2/3 of it recipes for single servings. I think the information about the cookbook should have said that the recipes were for single servings.

I’ve worked with parties and events for several years, and one of the biggest trends right now is mason jar meals. Some of the advantages of serving party food in jars is that we can make salads, entrees, and desserts ahead of time, seal them up, and serve when it’s time. Plus, when the ingredients are layered properly, the food stays fresh and delicious, they look festive and beautiful, and you can walk around and eat while chatting. In 150 Best Meals in a Jar there are lots of easy-to-make recipes from around the globe, as well as excellent tips and pointers of how to layer the foods so they stay fresh for parties and other events. I think the recipes would also work in a plastic container or could be served right away in any container you like. I use small pint sized jars for parties and the salads, main dishes and desserts all work well. There are various kinds of “bowls” that we’ve all really liked including the mango avocado chicken bowl, or the quick and easy California roll bowl. I suppose the book’s real strengths are its many wonderful salads, like the Greek or Pad Thai, the Lentil Salad with tzatziki, and the Asian slaw with honey ginger dressing.

Tanya Linton provides the reader with an amazing array of ways to prepare fresh meals fast, ranging from salads and soups to rice bowls and desserts, by packaging them up to 3 days ahead of time, layered in glass jars with a variety of sauces, condiments and dressings. These colorful meals utilize the freshest ingredients of the season and incorporate your own home-made salad dressings (recipes also provided). Why settle for a sandwich or an unhealthy and expensive fast food meal, with just a little advance planning, you can enjoy Fried Egg Rice Bowl, Lasagna in a Jar, Souvlaki, Salad Nicoise, or even a Classic Cobb Salad. Get those Mason jars out of storage and get busy on a Sunday afternoon to start creating beautiful meals that appeal to the eye as well as the tastebud that you can dole out the rest of the week.

I rarely take a Grammar Girl podcast live without at least quadruple-checking my main thesis, and Common Errors in English Usage has quickly become one of my most valued fact-checking resources. --'Grammar Girl' Mignon FogartyPaul Brians has written a handy and likable reference tool. When he gives you the right answer, he sends you off chuckling--a winning combination. --Jack Miles, former literary editor, LA TimesI d call Paul Brians' book incredible, fabulous, or fantastic, except thanks to him, I know now that none of those words are what I really mean. Let's just say that Common Errors in English Usage is the most cheerfully useful book I've read since the Kama Sutra. --Scott Simon, host of NPR's Weekend Edition

"It" being writing or speaking. And Paul Brians makes it fun. No easy task for someone writing about word usage. A worthy addition to the desk or bookshelf, where it will find frequent and happy use. And pay no attention to the three negative reviews. Their complaint is only that the book is about the use of the right word, and not about grammar, punctuation, or spelling. This complaint reminds me of the fellow who bought a camel and complained that it was not a sailboat. The complainers must not have read the "Look Inside" material from the book that is available on the Amazon website. If they had, they would have seen that the book is all about the choice of the right word. And the title of the book, Common Errors in English Usage, actually signals its content. The dictionary definition of "usage" tells us that it means the way in which a word or phrase is normally and correctly used. People simply should not buy a well-advertised and properly labeled camel and then complain that it is not a sailboat. It is not fair to the camel.

I've been referring to Paul Brians' work on common errors in English for many years, starting when it was available only as a web site. I recently purchased a copy of the paper version. I have recommended both of these sources to both graduate and undergraduate students. The clarity and good humor with which Dr. Brians explains the multitude of common confusions about English is beautiful to behold. As a few examples -- do you know when to use affect vs effect, lie vs lay, do vs due? Read this book, or refer to it as needed, and you may find yourself spontaneously speaking/writing better English! I highly recommend it.

Interesting little book. Purchased it because I second-guess myself sometimes when I'm writing for work and need to make sure everything is absolutely correct. And I have it on my Kindle, which goes everywhere with me, so I can use it at work or at home.

I have been visiting Paul Brians' website for years and finally decided to spring for the book. Unlike the website it is organized alphabetically and then indexed by the type of error. It is a great reference tool and I appreciate that Brians is good about specifying when there is disagreement about a specific matter. The physical book doesn't have the highest quality paper or binding but it is much nicer than a pocket dictionary.

These parts, or sections, make this a worthy purchase: Commonly Confused Expressions, Mangled Expressions, Problematic Prepositions, and Redundancies. The organized TOC and thorough index earn the highest mark for this third edition. Thank you!--GP

If you don't buy the book, visit his website! It is excellent, a fun read, and you might find yourself a couple of hours into it before long. Once you visit his site, you'll want the book for casual reading...I kid you not. Go ahead...visit the site right now while you are thinking about it!

Very succinct and witty. It contains a lot of comparisons of similar terms and phrases that are frequently confused and explanations of when to use them. I find it very useful. It would be great for someone whose knowledge of American idiom is just developing.

I'm enjoying the nuggets of information and humor as I read.

When I decided to try the vegan life style after watching the "Forks Over Knives" film I bought 7 vegan cookbooks. I used these books daily and prepared many boring and tasteless meals. In order to get an occasional break from these monotonous meals I bought the three vegan pie, cupcake and cookie books. I tried the cookie book first with disastrous results. The cookies were so bad that I threw most of them away and gave the book away to Goodwill. I hoped that someone would get the book and find the recipes as good as some of the reviews on Amazon that praised the book. Those praises, to me, are a mystery unless they were written by the authors of the book.Moving right along, I decided to try the pie book. I had most of the ingredients on hand for making Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Pie - almond milk, cornstarch, sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, salt, semisweet chocolate chips and pure vanilla extract. I needed a crust and the recipe gave the option of using the included recipe or using a store-bought 9-inch vegan graham cracker crust. I read the pie crust recipe and realized that I would never be able to obtain all the necessary ingredients. I chose to go to a health food store where I bought a crust.Preparation of the pie contents was quite simple. The only tools needed were a 2-quart saucepan, a fork. and a cooktop. By using a store-bought crust there was no need for an oven. The whole process took less than half an hour. The next step was to put the pie in the refrigerator for three hours. After waiting the recommended time I gave the pie the taste test. It was OK. Nothing to jump up and click your heels but OK. Certainly not as disastrous as the cookie book. There is a variation in the cookbook which suggests to mound the pie with "RAD WHIP". It is a thoroughly ludicrous recipe that would take me a conservative estimate of half a day to prepare. I passed on mounding the pie.One of the negatives of these cookbooks is the inclusion of surplus BS. Too much space is wasted with cutesy babble which could better be used to provide more useful recipe preparation information. I feel that 3 stars is a generous rating for this book because I believe that the simplicity of the recipe and the reasonable preparation time deserve a bit of extra recognition. However, knowing what I know now I would not have purchased this book.

I seriously LOVE this cookbook!!! Isa Chandra Moskowitz is a stone cold pie genius. I've made about half a dozen pies in this book, and all of them have turned out well. These pies are easy to make, and the only issue that I've had is that my family eats them too quickly. So far the strawberry rhubarb crumble and maple-kissed blueberry pies have been my two favorites. I'm sure that I'll have others when the holiday season approaches.

I am a huge fan of the Moskowitz/Romero cookbooks, so I am definitely biased. :) Pies and tarts were always really daunting for me in the kitchen, particularly the crusts. This book has plenty of great and easy to make crust recipes - some of which can be put together in minutes and ready to use (olive oil crust!). I've made the apple brown betty, strawberry pie, and peanut butter chocolate tart (OMG WHAT YUM) and they have all turned out beautifully. I really like that most of the pies can be made with readily available pantry items, though for some you will need to invest in some exotic ingredients (agar and other thickeners) - but these will last you a long time and won't expire quickly.

I bought Vegan Pie in the Sky when it first came out, and I fell in love with it from the moment it arrived in the mail. Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero are a fantastic vegan duo, and create wonderful, mouth-watering recipes. I have all of the books they co-wrote together and all of their solo books and I have never found fault with their cooking/baking.Since pie is my hands down favorite dessert - really, I will choose pie over anything, cake, brownies, cookies, if given the choice I would eat pie, especially fruit pie for every dessert, without question. - I was extremely excited when this book was released. It's a cute little book with 75 recipes, and all the ones I've tried have been solid. The layout is lovely, the ingredients lists are short, the instructions are clear and everything is very clean and concise. The pages are free of clutter, but full of helpful and useful tips, and the book is overflowing with beautiful, mouth-watering photography. I also love the friendly, witty, conversational tone of the authors and their anecdotes. I like a little personality in my cookbooks, I like a little humor and humanity and Isa and Terry certainly deliver. They come across as being very down to earth, regular people and they're not pretentious like a lot of seasoned cookbook authors. I like that.As for the recipes themselves, all the ones I've made have been fantastic, I haven o complaints on flavor, texture or overall presentation. I typically make pies for the holiday seasons and so far all the pies I've made from this book have been a hit with myself, my husband and my omnivore family and friends. Nobody ever knows that the pies are vegan. I love that the pies in this book use a nice mix of ingredients that are easy to find, nothing to exotic except for maybe agar but if you're a vegan baker that likes to make cream pies or artisan vegan cheese then you already know all about agar. I am particularly grateful for the fact that the creamy pies in this book do not rely solely on tofu for their creaminess. Honestly tofu pies usually don't do it for me. While tofu works pretty well I also find that it has a gritty taste, and the flavor can be very bland. That's not to say that all tofu pies are bad, but I like the ingenuity of using cashews, and coconut milk - sometimes with tofu - for that creaminess. I find that using 2 or more different `creamy' ingredients provides better body, better texture, better flavor, and no aftertaste of anything in particular. Some things you may wish to consider before buying this book however is that it has no nutritional information - and why should it? It's a dessert book, but I know some people like nutritional info. The book uses sugar, and white flour - again it's a dessert book, and these are obvious but some people seem to confuse the word vegan with health, and this isn't always the case. The authors intention was to create creamy, and delicious vegan pies, not health food. Besides we're talking about a book about pie, if you couldn't already figure that out then perhaps you have a larger problem. Also many - but not all - of the recipes include nuts. The cream pie recipes especially use cashews, I personally love this but if you have a cashew allergy then you may be out of luck. Unless you're adept at adapting recipe's to suit an allergy then I suggest you avoid the book. Lastly, while I found all the pie crust recipes in this book to be delicious I did not find them particularly easy to work with. Perhaps this is my own problem, me and dough do not make a good team and I often have problems when working with dough. Isa and Terry include a ton of great suggestions on how to make proper pies and good dough, but there are at least a couple other pie dough recipes that I've had better luck with. Still I do make the crusts from this book often enough, if your dough tears a bit it's easy enough to patch up and place that patchwork on the bottom where nobody will see.The following are the recipes I've made from the book and what I thought of them.Buttery Double Crust - Loved itOlive Oil Double Crust - Loved itSingle (and loving it) Pastry Curst - Loved itChocolate Shortbread Tart Shell - Loved itGraham Cracker Crust - Regular, Chocolate, Vanilla and Cookie Crumb Variations - Loved Them AllShe's My Cherry Pie - Loved itBlackberry Bramble Pie - Loved itBasil Peach Pie - Loved itAppleberry Pie - Loved itChocolate Galaxy Banana Cheesecake - Loved itBlueberry Bliss Cheesecake - Loved itRaspberry Lime Rickey Cheesecake - Loved itKey Lime Pie - Loved itCoconut Cream Pie - Loved itCoconut Lime Cream Pie - Loved itCappuccino Mousse Pie - Loved itSweet Potato Brazil Nut Crunch Pie - Loved itVoluptuous Pumpkin Pie - Loved it - a favorite of minePumpkin Cheesecake - Pretty GoodGrasshopper Pie - Loved it!Old Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Pie - Loved itCafé Mocha Cheesecake - Loved itI think the recipes in this book are easy enough for a novice baker or a newbie vegan, and so I wouldn't hesitate to buy this book for a friend or recommend it to a friend or family member. All the pies I've made so far have been enjoyed by vegans and omni's alike, so it seems the perfect bridge to gap the divide. My only regret is that I haven't had the time to make more of the pies, but many of the pages of my copy are dog-eared so as I make more I'll be sure to update my review.

Book actually for vegan daughter, but I did make the pumpkin cheesecake recipe. It was quite good considering it was missing that all important cheesecake ingredient - cream cheese. Daughter and her mother-in-law made Bramble Berry pie and the vegan crust on that was also good.

I have been transitioning to Paleo-type foods for about a year now and books like these are a godsend. I can sub out the gluten-laden flours for another and still get the creamy-type dairy-free desserts that I miss. I have always loved books by these authors for their from-scratch recipes that do not require store-bought, ready-made ingredients. And I love the sense of humor that fills this book as well.

Rolling Away the Stone: Mary Baker Eddy's Challenge to Materialism (Religion in North Am), by Stephen Gottschalk

From Publishers Weekly

Gottschalk, an independent historian and author of The Emergence of Christian Science in American Religious Life, completed this significant intellectual biography of Mary Baker Eddy before his death earlier this year. As with that earlier work, Gottschalk distinguishes himself by placing Christian Science in the larger context of American religion, rather than examining it as a mere curiosity or one-off sect. Eddy, he argues, should be taken seriously as a religious innovator whose radical theological teachings were intended not only to start a new religious movement, but also to reform all of Christianity from within. The biography focuses on the last two decades of Eddy's life, when the "retired" leader spent her seventies and eighties overseeing the construction of the Mother Church in Boston, revising Science and Health, battling external critics and internal dissension, and founding the Christian Science Monitor. Gottschalk, who was a Christian Scientist himself and once worked for the denomination, shows a clear pro-Eddy bias at times, especially when he is turning the tables on bombastic critics like Mark Twain or Joseph Pulitzer, but in general the book demonstrates copious and painstaking research. In fact, this is the first major biography of Eddy to be published since the opening of the denomination's archives to researchers a few years ago, and its command of primary sources sheds new light on Eddy's life and work. *Rolling Away the Stone* was not an easy read for me, but it was a valuable one. Amazon tells me that I bought this book back in 2007. It took me six years to be in the right place, mentally, to start reading it - and it took me another three or four weeks to finish it once I'd begun. It is not a quick read. I found myself constantly stopping to digest and ponder what Gottschalk has to say about the last 20 years of Mary Baker Eddy's life, and to think about the direction her movement has taken since her death.A theme that kept repeating itself throughout the book was the subject of "revival" and "renewal" for Eddy's movement. Gottschalk reports that, after an appearance at the Mother Church, Eddy wrote: "I find the general atmosphere of my church as cold and still as the marble floors..." and "I did feel a coldness a lack of inspiration all through the dear hearts... it was a stillness a lack of spiritual energy and zeal that I felt."Later Gottschalk writes: "As with other movements after the death of their founder, Christian Science became to a significant degree routinized, in the process losing much of the spiritual animus that accounted for its early growth. The pattern is observable, whether we are speaking of the early Christian church after Jesus, the Islamic movement in the decades after the death of Mohammad, or the Franciscan order after the death of St. Francis. Eddy appears to have anticipated with great apprehension that the Christian Science church, too, would settle down into a kind of bland predictability, when she was no longer on the scene. To her, being a Christian Scientist in any meaningful sense involved not only a strong commitment, but, in a sense, a spirit of adventure."As presented by Gottschalk in *Rolling Away the Stone*, I think "a spirit of adventure" is an apt description of Mary Baker Eddy's approach to life. Spontaneity, intuition, the courage to change course - these were all a part of who she was, how she lived her life, and how she led her movement. According to Gottschalk, formal, ecclesiastical, rigid doctrines and dogma were never what she intended for her movement. Gottschalk writes: "What apparently concerned her the most was the prospect that the church would devolve into yet another ecclesiastic organization, `barren,' to use her words in Science and Health, `of the vitality of spiritual power, by which material sense is made the servant of Science and religion becomes Christlike.'... This materialism could, she believed, take on ecclesiastical form. It did so when Christian Scientists, conditioned by their earlier adherence to orthodoxy, failed to break with outworn tradition, ritual, and other merely exterior forms of worship. `Long prayers, ecclesiasticism, and creeds,' she (Eddy) stated, `have clipped the divine pinions of Love, and clad religion in human robes. They materialize worship, hinder the Spirit, and keep man from demonstrating his power over error.'"Yeah. Thought-provoking.I'm really glad Stephen Gottschalk wrote this book, and I'm really glad I read it.Karen Molenaar Terrell, author of *Blessings: Adventures of a Madcap Christian Scientist*

This is a wonderful book about Eddy. My only criticism is that the author who is clearly a Christian Scientist (as I am) tries too hard sometimes to remain objective in his appraisal of Eddy. This "objectiveness" is probably not always believable to the non-Christian Scientist who may read this, and the author sometimes makes light or seems to make some editorial comments of the incredible healings done by Eddy which will not be taken very well by the true believing Christian Scientist who reads this. Also, the author often reminds us of Eddy's advanced age during much of her most productive years and seems to emphasize that Eddy had the typical weaknesses of a person at this age but does not discuss the amazing health and strength that was noted by many that knew her during this age. Many commented on how briskly she walked and how she could run up stairs into her advanced age. But, maybe that is the correct balance for a general audience.

An extremely detailed chronology of the final 22 years of Ms. Eddy's life as it relates to her founding of the Christian Science movement, enumerating on the challenges she had to overcome. This is NOT an inspirational metaphysical book, like her publications, rather the historical backdrop that took place during this period, that if carefully read, should add great perspective for sincere students of Christian Science. Recommended for advanced students of Christian Science seeking the sociological, religious and historical significance of Ms. Eddy's work.

This was not what I had expected. It tells of Mrs Eddy's fight to bring to the world what, to me, makes me Bible real and the only thing that answers many questions that a simple perusal or deeper study of the Bible up. This was one great woman and far ahead of her time.Thank you Mr Gottschalk for giving us this view of a strong lady with vision.

A well written book that tells of the many challenges and human resistance that Mary Baker Eddy found in bringing forth a new way of thinking of religion, God and our relationship to our divine parent. Her devotion to God and to helping mankind better understand Christ Jesus' healing mission and teaching took fortitude and commitment beyond anything most people ever encounter. The book is well worth reading and helps one to gain an understanding of this remarkable woman and her contributions to society.

The book is well-written and provides some new information about Mary Baker Eddy's life, documented from the Mary Baker Eddy Library. As a Christian Scientist, I was interested in learning about the last class Mrs. Eddy taught, and that it dealt with the Trinity. Quoting from new sources, I was able to learn more about what Mrs. Eddy believed about the Trinity. As the book dealt with just the last 20 years of her life, mostly when she lived at Pleasant View, I found it interesting how she came to find people to live with her there and help her, as well as new observations of students who lived with her. If you have read other biographies about Mrs. Eddy, I think you will find this a helpful adjunct.
