You'll learn about the history of drums, you'll read about several other percussion instruments, where you might be able to take lessons, you'll learn about the composition of the drum itself, what it takes to be a good drummer, the necessity of being a team player in a band, and you'll read about some funny, funky mistakes that drummers have made. Perhaps the most important thought of all was expressed by Jeannine Maddox when she said, "You just have to want to do it. Mark Rashid's easy style of writing and his interesting personal stories made it hard for me to put the book down. So much of what he wrote really resonated with my own feelings about creating a partnership with my horse. His concept of passive leadership was described in a way that was easily recognizable in many personal situations of my own experiences. I am looking forward to reading more of Mark's books and have already ordered some. These are not the "training manuals" of other trainers and his experiences and approach makes me look forward to training my horse and building on the bond of friendship/partnership.

Passive Leadership was a "foreign" concept to me... I have a "dominant" horse who "needs a strong leader." Or so I thought...Well, after reading this book I decided that maybe the "trouble" I've been having is that I'm trying to beat my horse at his own game... When in fact, his dominance came from fear. Okay, that may sound elemental to all you amazing horse handler people out there... I'm just learning my way around horses after a 30 year break to raise my children as a single mom and build a business... So I'm use to making things happen... my way.Learning to be still, grounded, confident, quiet, steady and consistent may all be well in good in "words." But after reading story after story creatively and engagingly written by Mark, I found myself actually "experiencing" the meaning of those words and watching my horse respond with total attention, respect, calmness, willingness and soften... Dare I say, nearly effortlessly... well certainly by comparison to before...If you're new to horses, or re-entering the life of horses after a break... or if you have been at it your whole life, I hope you'll take a moment to read this book and give yourself permission to open to something new developing between you and your horse.

This is the 1st of Rashid's books acquired -- I like the format, his writing style & his story. Needless to say, in a short period I have bought all his books. There are several "great" horse people out there, altho Mark might not have the name recognition of some of the others. Sort of like some of the great spiritual masters -- & this is a Spiritual affair! -- his teacher (a true Master in his own right)was totally unknown, but saw something in Mark that warranted passing on his knowledge. Although having been "around" horses intermittently all my life & as a mixed (veterinary) practitioner, I would never call myself a "horse person". Now nearing retirement & finding myself at, probably, my final "resting" stop at a thoroughbred racetrack, I've come home with a retired bay gelding & Mark's story has such resonance, it forces me to truly dedicate myself to creating a trusted, working relationship to these great animals!Peter L. If you are looking for a how-to book, this is not for you. But, perhaps, you may want to re-evaluate your approach if so.Mark Rashid uses the old school method of teaching: stories. He tells stories about how he learned to change his approach to horses, and the experiences he had which led him to deeper awareness of the horse's perspective. He emphasizes the dignity of the horse's soul in his whole approach. It is leadership with complementarity, which horses almost universally recognize and appreciate, and to which they positively respond. His philosophy is less about 'standing firm', and more about 'going with but directing'.In case you have not guessed, these principles and ways of being are not limited to the equestrian world. In this book you will find one of the better leadership primers you might ever find. I highly recommend it not only for equestrians, but for leaders in any area. You will learn much, in small, incremental, but soul-changing ways.

Once in a while, throughout all the good books you read, there is one every once in a while that stands out as a gem that will forever change your perspective on life and have you thinking for weeks after. I have never as much as ridden a horse and do not ever come into contact with the equestrian world at all. But I found this book magnificent and the philosophy transcends it's intended application to horses. This is the philosophy of life, how to lead and how to teach, and how to be and how to be the person other people want to be around. On a personal level it has helped me to better understand, and view in a different light, some of the (difficult) relationships in my life and also made me see my own passive personality from a fresh angle. I think this book can be applied to all areas of life. I think this may have been easy for me to see since I don't know much about horses.With regards to horses, I found this a perfect introduction to understanding horses and the depth of psych of the horse. I also look at horses in an entirely different way. If all of mankind were like the passive horse this world would be heaven.Highly highly recommended. Wisdom on a page.

Pablo Noriega is a flower essence therapist and naturopath trained in Chinese Medicine. He has taught courses and seminars in Spain, Italy, Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica, and Mexico. He is a professor of Chinese Medicine and Bach Flower Therapy at two institutes in Buenos Aires and part of the team of flower essence therapists at Anthemon Institute in Barcelona, Spain, and at Mount Vernon Institute of Flower Essence Therapists in Santiago, Chile. Great learning book. I'm just beginning to learn and listen to what the experts are teaching us about flower essence theory with Chinese Medicine. . Helps in understanding the strange words ( Yin Yang) and meaning. I have hear the word Yin Yang and thought it was funny. Excellent book. I recommend it.

Pablo Noriega approaches the intersection of Bach Flower Therapy and Chinese Medicine with a spirit of openness and inspiration but which is not lacking in foundation. On the contrary, he took care to write it over the course of some ten years, and it includes knowledge that he has gathered and synthesized not only in clinical practice but also as a colleague and contemporary of top international professionals in Bach Flower Therapy and an insatiable thirst for knowledge in Chinese Medicine. His access to knowledge of Dr. Orozco's Transpersonal Patterns of the Bach Flowers (as of now accessible only in Spanish), allowed him to see clear patterns in the Flowers' Qi, so to speak, and apply them to Chinese Medicine's theories of Yin Yang, Wu Xing, Zang Fu, Qi and Xue, and Wu Shen, for regulating Spirit and Qi, without losing the tradition of a personalized Flower Therapy. He also opens new doors to Flower Therapists based in time-tested knowledge. It is the poetry inherent in a Latino mind that allows him to see the unseen in new ways, to write the foundations for this bridge, as he calls it (the transliteration of original title in Spanish would be "Chinese Medicine and the Bach Flowers: building a bridge"). My employer, a Fortune 100 financial services company, has been overhauling its management strategy. One of the elements that they have been teaching us is the "PDAC Circle" (Plan/Do/Check/Adjust) , which they also call the "Deming Circle". A little googling found this book, which I decided to read to see just where all these techniques they were teaching us came from. He goes into that in depth, and more, with references. It's very helpful to be able to associate the training I get at work with the ideas and case studies that Deming presents.What I wasn't expecting is that this is a really good read. Deming writes extremely well, he knows his stuff, and he has a vast wealth of experience to draw from. I have a sense that at this point in his life he was a bit angry or frustrated that American industry was still riding the path to ruin even after he had shown in Japan that his methods work.

Dr. Deming best summarizes the purpose of the book: "This book teaches the transformation that is required for survival, a transformation that can only be accomplished by man. A company can not buy its way into quality - it must be led into quality by top management. A theory of management now exists. Never again may anyone say that there is nothing new in management to teach."He then proceeds with outlining and subsequently detailing his "14 points for management". These fourteen points, he argues, form the basis of the required transformation of the American industry:"1. Create constancy of purpose toward improvement of product and service, with the aim to become competitive and to stay in business, and to provide jobs.2. Adopt the new philosophy. We are in a new economic age. Western management must awaken to the challenge, must learn their responsibilities, and take on leadership for change.3. Cease dependence on inspection to achieve quality. Eliminate the need for inspection on a mass basis by building quality into the product in the first place.4. End the practice of awarding business on the basis of price tag. Instead, minimize total cost. Move toward a single supplier for any one item, on a long-term relationship of loyalty and trust.5. Improve constantly and forever the system of production and service, to improve quality and productivity, and thus constantly decrease costs.6. Institute training on the job.7. Institute leadership. The aim of supervision should be to help people and machines and gadgets to do a better job. Supervision of management is in need of overhaul, as well as supervision of production workers.8. Drive out fear, so that everyone may work effectively for the company.9. Break down barriers between departments. People in research, design, sales, and production must work as a team, to foresee problems of production and in use that may be encountered with the product or service.10. Eliminate slogans, exhortations, and targets for the work force asking for zero defects and new levels of productivity. Such exhortations only create adversarial relationships, as the bulk of the causes of low quality and low productivity belong to the system and thus lie beyond the power of the work force.11a. Eliminate work standards (quotas) on the factory floor. Substitute leadership.11b. Eliminate management by objective. Eliminate management by numbers, numerical goals. Substitute leadership.12a. Remove barriers that rob the hourly worker of his right to pride of workmanship. The responsibility of supervisors must be changed from sheer numbers to quality.12b. Remove barriers that rob people in management and in engineering of their right to pride of workmanship. This means, inter alia, abolishment of the annual or merit rating of management by objective.13. Institute a vigorous program of education and self-improvement.14. Put everybody in the company to work to accomplish the transformation. The transformation is everybody's job."While the book may seem dry at points, particularly if being read from cover to cover, it encompasses numerous gems in management. Here are the fruits of exhortations: 1) Failure to accomplish the goal 2) Increase in variability 3) Increase in proportion defective 4) Increase in costs 5) Demoralization of the work force 6) Disrespect for the management"2- "The job of management is to replace work standards by knowledgeable and intelligent leadership...Wherever work standards have been thrown out and replaced by leadership, quality and productivity have gone up substantially, and people are happier on the job."3- "Incidentally, computation of savings from use of a gadget (automation or robotic machinery) ought to take account of total cost, as an economist would define it. In my experience, people are seldom able to come through with figures on total cost."4- "Quality must be measured by the interaction between three participants: (1) the product itself; (2) the user and how he uses the product, how he installs it, how he takes care of it, what he was led to expect; 3) instructions for use, training of customer and training of repairman, service provided for repairs, availability of parts. The top vertex of the triangle does not by itself determine quality."5- "There are two types of quality in any system, whether it be banking or manufacturing. The first is quality of design. These are the specific programs and procedures that promise to produce a saleable service or product: in other words, what the customer requires. The second type is quality of production, achievement of results with the quality promised. Quality control works both with the product and with the design of the product. And it is at this point that quality control begins to differ from the traditional system. To find the mistake is not enough. It is necessary to find the cause behind the mistake, and to build a system that minimizes future mistakes."6- "...Good agreement between independent results of two men would only mean they have a system. It would not mean they are both right. There is no right answer except by methods agreed upon by experts."7- "Figures on accidents do nothing to reduce the frequency of accidents. The first step in reduction of the frequency of accidents is to determine whether the cause of an accident belongs to the system or to some specific person or set of conditions. Statistical methods provide the only of analysis to serve as a guide to the understanding of accidents and to their reduction."

Contrary to the terminology used (‘Total Quality Management’) it actually deals with creating and sustaining successful organizations. The latter term: ‘sustaining’ has a fundamental importance as organizations should not be run for short term admiration on the stock exchange, but for long term endurance and profit sustainability.‘Out of the Crisis’ was written in 1986 but it still remains valid, possibly even more than back in the 1980s, as these days far too many managers tend to do their jobs based on gut feeling, or being influenced by an article in the media or on the internet.You will most likely find the book difficult to read as it relies on a different paradigm and it takes time to adopt it. I was looking for a baked donut book, and this one seemed to be one of the most highly rated ones with baked donuts in the title. Going off another reviewer that was unhappy because "much of it is baked donuts" I decided to purchase this one. But out of 150 recipes, only ~40 or so baked and 110 are fried. They do look interesting, so I'll probably keep it for myself for just those ones, but as a primary source of baked donuts perhaps look elsewhere.

I was looking for a donut recipe book that actually had a good amount of baked donut recipes that I wanted to bake. This is the only one I came across but I am NOT disappointed at all. Great recipes and so far the 2 baked were hits and gone within the morning time.

I have had better luck with the baked donut recipes, and am still experimenting with making donuts with my recently purchased fryer. I can say, it's not as easy as I thought it would be. Looking forward to trying new recipes from this book. I like the practical steps and tips, the fact it provides both fried and baked donut recipes, as well as different glazes.

We love this cook book/ donut recipes. We made about 6 different fonts so far and all of them were great. And there's was still alot of them err want to try. I would try all 150 but with 150 different donuts you'll at least find 20 to 50 you want to try. I think it's worth the buy. And for the price you'll be happy
