This is a wonderful, thought-provoking book. It's short, but I like a book that says what needs to be said without a lot of extra fluff. I run a Yoga Teacher Training program and I plan to add this to my required reading list. You definitely need to read the Gita and Sutras (and the author tells you this up front), but after you've read them, come back to this book. I can also see this as a good resource for Yoga workshops (not just teacher trainings) or for individuals looking to better their understanding of Yoga.

As a beginning yoga student, I have been focused on positions and breathing. Beyer-Nelson provides a thought-provoking entry into the principles behind yoga. This is not a book for readers looking for instructions on poses. Instead, it moves the reader beyond to consider his/her mind state and how the body and mind work together to restore peace and health. The poetry is an added bonus. I'll come back to this book to deepen my awareness.

An easy read with a simple and approachable perspective on Yoga's two great masterful works.

I read Easing into the Bhagavad Gita and Patanjali Yoga Sutras last year when it was first published. Now I have the audio version narrated by Jack Nolan and I've listened to it as I followed along in the book. His voice has a good pace and expression as he narrated. It's like reading it again but at a slower more gentle pace. I especially liked his reading when he came to the poetry sections.

This book is both inspiring and practical. As spiritual seekers, there is a temptation to reach out for more and more teachings to perhaps find those magical words that will set us free. While this may be useful in the beginning, there comes a time for actually putting the teachings to work in our lives where the magic can make a difference in our understanding. The format for this lovely volume provides exercises and suggestions for applying these ancient teachings in our everyday lives and finding how fully alive and transformative they still are. Thank you Ms. Beyer-Nelson.

About the Author

ALLEN RUCKER was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, raised in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and has an MA in Communication from Stanford University, an MA in American Culture from the University of Michigan and a BA in English from Washington University, St. Louis. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller, "The Sopranos: A Family History," as well as two books with comedian Martin Mull, "The History of White People In America" and "A Paler Shade of White." His next book, "The Sopranos Family Cookbook," comes out in September, 2002. I have been slowly collecting Michele Scicolone's cookbooks. She did the recipes in this and the previous Soprano family Cookbook. This is a cookbook author well worth collecting. Her recipes all seem explosion proof (our family meaning is that a recipe that you can tinker with according to whats currently available in your own kitchen and still turns out tasting superb). LOL that is not necessarily the kind of explosion proof that a mobster would mean.Other reasons Michele's recipes work are that they don't call for too many ingredients or expensive hard to find things. They all taste great and can tolerate substitutions without loss of quality. (see explosion proof above). Tonight's dinner is that peppered pork loin with broccoli.As for the TV series, never watched it, but I might, just from the engaging bits of humour in between the recipes.Last of all this book garnered a criticism that it had too few recipes. Not as far as I'm concerned. Lots of them, plenty with full colour illustration so you can see how it should look.In between the recipes and humour are actually some very good common sense guidelines and tips for such things as navigating family holidays and momentous events like weddings, funerals and christenings all from an Italian American Catholic perspective but easily flexing to other backgrounds. You don't have to be Italian American and Catholic to appreciate the sane advice on putting together a dinner party for 12 by Carmela and Charmaine or the reasoning behind making an effort at Christmas, Easter and other family religious celebrations.The personalities may not be that engaging. I'd be repelled by most of them, but the wisdom in putting on a party, entertaining people who don't agree with each other but must get together for the sake of the family as a whole is very practical.But first and foremost, it's a great cookbook sequel to the Sopranos' Family Cookbook and that is thanks to the author of all the recipes inside, Michele Scicolone. I highly recommend her cookbooks. So far I've got of her cookbooks and they are excellent.

I ordered this for a Sopranos fanatic friend's birthday, and she loved it! She tried the recipes and they were delicious, and there is just enough mix of Sopranos snark and charm to make it a great read too (and yes, Carmella's Baked Ziti recipe is here).

Ok... I bought this book because I love the Soprano's... but I got more than I bargained for! This book is hilarious and believe it or not... there are some awesome recipes in here that even the worst cook can cook! Reading this book was like spending an evening with the Sopranos! Here you go... I liked this book so much that I am thinking of buying a few more to give out as Christmas presents! You really couldn't go wrong... not only is it funny, so it is entertaining... it has great recipes that are easy to make and taste awesome! Sounds like a gift to me! They should come out with another one... I would buy it! Get it... you won't be sorry! Totally happy with this purchase! Bada bing, bada boom!

One of my two favorite cookbooks, the other is the Soprano's Family Cookbook.

My neighbor was visiting when this cookbook arrived. She wanted to borrow it for an hour or two. It was a week before she returned it. It's a great cookbook, especially if you loved the "Soprano's". It has all their family recipes.....& my neighbor loved it so much, she ordered one for herself.

Have owned this book for years and just sent this copy to my brother. The recipes are genuine, just like my mother and grandmother made.

I have throughly enjoyed reading this book.It has all the characters in the Sopranos giving out advice on what to do at certain social gatherings and Carmela is the star because it is told from her viewpoint.It is a fun read and informative. I tried one of the recipes tonight and it was delicious.If you are a fan of The Sopranos or a lover of cookbooks it has something for you. It has a lot of articles and pictures from the show.It is worth a read.

As someone who does give a lot of parties, and I am totally at one with the style of Amy Sedaris (I like You, Entertaining under the influence) and always aspired to Carmella's style, I love this book! I like Amy's hilarious book too. They are QUITE different.I just started watching the Sopranos and having the cook book is cute and fun. I am enjoying the humerous characters giving advice. It is actually very good advice!As a cook book; it has party menu plans and recipes and they are doable and quite good. Plus, I never would have thought of putting a white serving plate on a white tablecloth with white flowers...really! I am not joking. It never would have crossed my mind! It really does make things look pretty. I think that the photos and menus are great.I like the review question # 4; I am over the age of 13, hee hee...I am 50 and I have given a lot of parties. I have party anxiety everytime! I especially liked Doctor Melfi's advice on that.

Not just a pretty picture book, this one has detailed coverage of painting and architecture along with brief historical and cultural vignettes. Although very well illustrated, the small format (6¾ by 6 inches) makes it usable as a travel guide. Don't visit Andalucia without it!That is the brief review I wrote for a recommended reading list for my "Arts in Spain" course at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. When I checked back with Amazon to see if it was still available for my students to purchase, I was shocked at the current price.I bought my copy for around $15; the price on the dust cover is $19.95. Yet we have vendors selling copies through Amazon at more than $60 and one offered at $120!!! What's going on here? If the book were out of print and limited copies available it might be understandable, but it was only published in 2006. Amazon clearly needs to do a better job of policing its vendors.If you go to Borders, you will find paper-back copies available for $16.99 and hard-cover copies offered at the cover price, $19.95. This is an excellent book - just don't buy it from Amazon.

We enjoyed the beautiful photos pre-trip, and once in Andalusia we found this book to be a fantastic resource for the historical background as well. Highly recommended.

This book gives great background info about complex Al Andalus. Now I understand more of Spain and the great worthwile influence of the Moors on the whole of Europe.

I'm from Andalucia, and this book is not that great, besides it is very small.

I bought the book to help with my term paper I was writing for an Art class. The photos are superb and the description of the art and arquitecture was useful.

Both pictures and text are superb! Spain in general doesn't interest me, but a visit to Andalusia is now on my bucket list.

More description than pictures however gives a vast amount of information.

I found the early chapters of the book to be well written and insightful. Essentially, the authors documented the rapid expansion of private debt to unsustainable levels, as the public chased home appreciation, caused by easy credit. The authors went on to avert that the collapse in housing prices had a greater adverse effect on the wealth and spending habits of the poorer cohorts of our society. They asserted further that the efforts of the government and the FED to mitigate the effects of the Great Recession where ineffective since they did not address the major cause, that being, the over leveraged private sector. They assigned most of the blame to lenders while leveling much milder criticism on the government, FED, Fannie and Freddie, and the American public.The final third of the book described the authors' solution to the problem. The authors assert that creditors did not absorb their fair share of the losses as a result of the collapse of housing. Their solution was a new mortgage contract they named a "shared-responsibility mortgage" (SRM) which essentially places the lender in a partial equity position. The lender could absorb future losses through reduction of mortgage principal if the underlining property fell in value and additional profits if the home appreciates. All the subtracting would result from changes in various indices that the authors claim can be developed. The additions would be recognized at the time of sale. (What happens if the owner does not sell his home? Is he presented with a bill by the mortgage holder at the time the mortgage is paid off? What happens if the owner dies does the note holder have a claim against the estate)?The authors were heavy on the positive macroeconomic effects of such a program and light on detail. The complexity of these products would be well beyond the ken of the vast majority of the American public, who couldn't understand the workings of a simple ARM, according to the media. I can not image the required regulations, new federal agencies, political demagoguery, and potential fraud by lenders and homeowners of such a complex product.The debt orgy that we experienced in the first decade of this century would not have happened a generation ago. Prior to the GSE's and securitization, lender's where much more prudent dispensing credit since they anticipated holding the mortgage until redemption. A far simpler solution would be to require lenders to maintain an significant stake in any mortgage orginated by their institution. Adam Smith and Nassim Taleb would understand!

This book was a useful read for me because it laid out the relationship between excessive mortgage debt, the collapse in demand and the depth of the great recession. They also make some interesting assertions about the impact of collapsing house prices on wealth inequality; the minor role played in the recession of a systemic threat to the banking system (as opposed to a liquidity crsis); and therefore the umipactful wealth transfer from taxpayers to bankers, and bank shareholders and lenders. In general, such assertions are interesting but sloppy. As happens so often in these popularizing books, the writers spin a coherent logic but forget that logic and the real world are two different animals. As a result, empirical tests seem very thin. Countervailing explanations are not fairly considered before rejection. For example, isn't it possible that the taxpayer bailouts of the banking industry saved the banking system? Can't that explain the lack of impact on recession? I wouldn't say they are absolutely wrong so much as they don't give the lay person the tools to fairly evaluate their assertions. Finally, their preventitive for a future housing price based recession adresses the moral hazard of mortgage forgiveness. But other than that it seems wholly unrealistic. They fail to address any issues relating to regulatory capture and excessive regulation.

Amir and Atif have collaborated on a tour de force describing the foundation of the Great Recession, which they’ve published 6-8 years after the key events. Contemporaneously with the same events, Richard Bowen with Citigroup was also aware of an Imminent Collapse, and was doing everything he could to protect the company he was managing. Bowen’s efforts to insulate his company from the storm were in direct opposition to the overwhelming desire of the other key managers to continue their alchemical reports and become personally wealthy. Bowen (www.richardmbowen.com) was quickly discharged. Citigroup, much too big to fail, paid moderate fines and has suffered a bit. Three hundred fifty-two other banks, be they forever nameless, have failed outright since 2008, at this writing.When one enters a casino with the roulette wheels all painted red, it is hard to resist the impulse to play. When one notes that the Gaming Commissioner and the County Sheriff also have seats at the table, RED becomes an even more attractive position. The National Bedtime Story has focused the blame for This Great Recession on your neighbor’s avarice for granite countertops. That problem is now solved. We continue to print money; maybe we’ll start calling them Continental Dollars.I’m currently taking a position as a judicial activist, focusing on this same bad economic period, and these same bad actors. I’m using Amir and Atif’s House of Debt as a key educational resource to my juries, along with Jennifer Taub’s Other People’s Houses, and Michael Lewis’ The Big Short. Something must be done.

What an amazing read! The basic premise is that household debt is the culprit behind so many of the recessions and economic downturn that we've seen last century. And the research supports it.The formula is simple: as households incur more debts, the whole economy gets closer to a downturn. While the sub-prime mortgages really hurt us, so many of the middle class who own only 20 to 30% of their homes were painfully affected. The ones who are able to withstand such downturns are ones who own most of their capital (like 80% of their homes and other properties).The solution is simple:- From a consumer standpoint, try to avoid debt. If you have to, make sure you not only afford it, but also have buffer so you're not stretched.- From a system standpoint, new options have to exist where it's more focused on equity and less on debt.All in all, it was one of the best books that I read about the economic meltdown of 2008.

He thought up thirteen rules, Pop Stebbens offered up two peach baskets and the game was an instant and long-lasting success.In the "1930s and 1940s, the game `took off.'" It was hot and the makings of the modern game had begun. The game was maturing and a more strategic game was emerging. During this time there "were enough good players and enough fans for new professional leagues to start." In this book you'll get to take a look at most of the best players, men and women alike, to ever come out of the game. You'll read about exiting games, a controversial game between the Americans and the Soviets, loads of trivia, numerous different kinds of shooting (can you do a finger roll?), some truly astounding lucky shots, and more. Have you ever heard of anyone consistently scoring around 40 points a game? There was someone who did that, but you'll have to read the book to find out who it was!This is a great book for the basketball fan. I've read many that are good, but tend to rely mostly on statistics to move the book along. This one is alive with information and is very vibrant. It's peppered with action photographs that will draw even the most reluctant reader to the end of the book. There are numerous informative sidebars and in the back of the book there are additional recommended book and website resources. If you have a diehard young basketball fan in your house, you just might want to swish this one onto your gotta have list!
