Very sweet and funny book! I love the way the book goes back and forth between MacLaine and Terry (her dog). She in true MacLaine style goes deep into the unknown and the "what if's" about life. The detail she gives to the surroundings makes you feel like you're right there with them going along with them on movie sets and mountains and walks. Such a great book and I'll be reading it many times over throughout the years. MacLaine ALWAYS entertains while making you think and helps you keep your mind open! Thank you Miss Shirley MacLaine!

Great book about life death and the love of a "forever " dog. Dogs never die they remain with us!

Shirkley McClaine never surprises me with her books. This book, OUT ON A LEASH" is really different in format. She writes a chapter, then TERRY, herterrier "writes a chapter on her view book of life and spiritualism," and living with Shirley. Well, you know Terry didn't really write it, but I really enjoyed the book, which was a fast two day read for me. If you enjoy Shirley McClaine as an actress and writer, buy the book, please. It is truly different, and offers view points on life and living from a dog's point of view. Thanks!

I love Shirley Maclaine and have read all of her books. This book didn't disappoint, rather, it made me feel moved and uplifted from beginning to end.

I've decided to write a review after perusing all the ones already written, and after reading the book myself. I want any future potential buyer to know what's what. Disregard all those comments that say Shirley MacLaine has lost it, is fuzzy-minded or too sentimental. While "Out On a Limb" remains Shirley's best book so far, this one is clear-headed as can be and deals with a different subject, a magical animal. What those other comments indicate is the readers' lack of a sense of humor.You know some people are so darn literal, right? In truth, there are wonderful insights and wisdoms throughout the book. If you don't like animals, or if you think a dog is a dog is a dog, then you probably won't relate that well to the book, unless you recognize truth when you see it. This experience Shirley is having with a canine is rare. Her dog, Terry. is not your father's four-legged pal or your mother's cutsy, cuddly snookums. It's not about 90% of what most of us have experienced with a family dog or an adorable, sweet, or smart dog or cat that we loved and remember fondly. No, this is that rare 10% of animals that come into one's life that transcend the ordinary pooch or pussy. You have to experience it to understand it.Shirley is NOT ga-ga in her dotage over a pet! She has been gifted with one of these transcendent animals and she is right: they do speak to their humans in many ways, and they love you like no man or woman has ever loved you (unless you're very, very lucky) before. I'm not talking about devotion. That's ordinary, expected. I'm talking about the real thing: unconditional love. We use that expression too much these days and most of us are lying about it. Frankly, we don't know what we're talking about. It's something we want to do, something we want to get, but we seldom come close. When we do, it's unforgettable whether it happens with man, woman or beast. It's a spiritual experience to be treasured and Shirley is one lucky lady.

I enjoyed this story a lot. Uplifting and joyful.

it doesn't have the SAM acess code.... Really?

Nice edit upgrade from the 2010 but print is so small that it requires a magnifying glass to read it - which is repeatedly awkward to follow through with weekly reading assignments. Suggestion: Print in Volume I and Volume II and increase the font points so it can be read. If not you'll end up going to subletting it to a computer company to do it all online - which is what I had to do after I bought the book - which is now a paper weight..

This book is very well illustrated and well written. However, there are two things that I didn’t like about the book. The baby llama throws a temper tantrum and and the entire book is about his impatience with his mama. Then there is a page or two of him suddenly getting really scared of the dark and the illustrations may be a little unsettling for some young readers. The colors, big eyes, and one page of him yelling at the top of his lungs in terror for his mama. It just feels weird whenever I read it to my 2 year old. However, this is just my opinion and I know many parents out there have no problem with it. Just wanted to share in case there is another parent out there that might appreciate this heads up.

If you search on YouTube for raps of this book, there are a bunch of videos of famous rappers putting their own spin on this book. I imitate one of them when reading this to my 8 month old and he loves it. It’s the only book he pays attention to.

I've bought several copies of this book. The first one was for my DOG. He loves it and gets so relaxed by hearing the repetitive words of Llama Llama Red Pajama and he really likes it when I use my voice to be Llama's mama when she is racing up the stairs to find out why Little Llama is in such a tizzy. I make this sort of shrill yelling, like 'aahhhhhh, aahhhhhhh, aahhhhh,' to portray Llama's mama as she is running up the stairs and my American Bull Dog gets so happy and excited with that sound. HE REALLY DOES KNOW THE WHOLE BOOK. I've purchased other copies for friends. I realized the other night when I was feeling a little alone, and I was reading it by myself... that the book is really about comforting ME and so then I thought well if it can make a grown adult feel so loved, and a big mcfatty of a dog definitely feel SO LOVED, then I can only imagine how much it must fill the hearts of young children. I discovered LLRP books about a year ago and was so surprised to learn that it was first published many years ago. How had I not heard of this wonderful book and series of books by Anna Dewdney?! Then I learned that Mrs. Dewdney has passed away and my heart and mind is filled with so much sadness...I hope she knows how much love her books bring to so many. She had to be one of the most wonderful persons in the world to have created so much beauty and love. I got another copy today from Amazon to send to a special child I love. I also got the LLRP doll...for myself. Oh the places he will go with me! IMAGINE MY SURPRISE TO SEE A STICKER ON THE BOOK, LLRP, THAT SAID IT IS SOON TO BE A NETFLIX ORIGINAL SERIES! I can't wait; I'm so happy!

Found this book on Amazon's book editors "100 Children's Books to Read in a Lifetime", which has been very handy in directing me toward books for our four grandchildren that had been published after my own children were young, and in reminding me of books I'd forgotten (need a new lock for that memory bank!) Anna Dewdney does a nice job of matching rhymes with her own whimsical illustrations in recreating the real-life scenes grandparents can recall with their own children (and young parents may be currently experiencing), in which Baby Llama (in his red pajamas) is read a bedtime story by Mama Llama, after which he's kissed goodnight and Mama heads downstairs to a sink full of dishes.Baby starts feeling a bit apprehensive in the dark, and begins the usual childhood ploys for getting Mama back in the room... he needs a drink, calls out for her, but she's preoccupied with dishes and then a phone call. He begins wimpering, moaning, crying, hollering, stomping and pouting, jumping and shouting... wondering possibly "if Mama Llama's GONE?" Mama finally comes back in, a bit frustrated at first, then softening as she realizes he just needs a bit of reassurance... "Little Llama, don't you know, Mama Llama loves you so? Mama Llama's always near, even if she's not right here." After a double dose of kisses, he's then able to snuggle into his pillow and fall asleep.Oh my goodness, did this book rattle my memory bank... though I can look back on it now and chuckle, I recall being five months into pregnancy with my second son, attempting to transition the first one (@ 2-1/2 years old) into a "big boy bed". The bottom of the baby bed had been lowered as far as it could be for quite a while, and we were nearing the time we'd have to raise it all the way back up! "Numero Uno", as I affectionately call him, was SO happy - we have a picture of him all tucked in on his first night, his trusty Glo Worm (a stuffed toy from the early '80s) at his side, great big grin on his face... until I walked out. Oh, the bedtime battle of wills between parent and child!Sometimes all it takes is that extra bit of reassurance. That's how it was with my younger son, and with our oldest grandson. But as for my own oldest and our middle grandson (HIS son), all I could do - when "Numero Uno" told me about his struggles in trying to get his second son to stay in bed and go to sleep - was to give a wry smile and nod of recognition - and a big ol' wink! Cute book, fun to read, and certainly worth a try!

We love Llama Llama books in our house. Fun rhymes that are easy to act out and remember. The stories are easy for even the littlest kids to understand. Also, great for teaching emotions. Both our kids have autism and Anna Dewdney books have been a great resource for us.

Our two year old twins love this book. They have it memorized! They love it when I read it dramatically and say the words along with me. It has become one of our favorites. :)

This was purchased for my son based on the message and positive reviews. However I’m really not impressed and it doesn’t hold his interest at all. He typically enjoys books that rhyme, but this is far too repetitive. Quite frankly I find it rather annoying to read.I won’t bother returning this but will instead be donating it to charity in the hopes that it ends up in the hands of someone who will enjoy it more than we do.

I kept looking for a children's version of Don Quioxte and I think this is the best one available. There are sporadic black and white line drawings, which are helpful for following the story, and this isn't supper condensed, so there's plenty of variety happening. I don't think this would work for a very young child, but overall, I was very impressed with this. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in giving your children a taste of the masterpiece without overwhelming them.

I am sure this is a delightful story, but the printing is worthless. Multiple pages were missing, making it impossible to read cohesively. Please buy from a different publisher! Very disappointed.

The book is well written and easy to read. But I think it is a little too condensed and simple to get a true flavor of the original. If you just want an easy to read overview of Don Quixote you'll be satisfied.

I've read Don Quijote many times while growing up in Spain, but never had I come across such an entertaining version of this wonderful novel. I bought it for my 9-year-old who absoulutely love it! It describes the characters with great detail and wit, my daughter was very engaged from begining to end. I highly recommend it.

This was a purchase I made for my kids. It was needed for a report and they were able to read it and do well on their reports.

This is a wonderful translation and is the perfect level for my 11 year old boy. We look foward to reading the next adventure every night. The fact that it is an old translation adds to the feeling of it coming from another time. Highly recommended!

I did not even read the book completely, but the first pages and I found 2 mistakes. Quixana was not the real name of Don Quixote, it was Alonso Quijano, and the horse name is Rocinante with C not Z! I was going to ask my students to read it, but not anymore!

Easy to see why its a timeless classic. My 7 yr old loved hearing the stories
