52 days after Ronald Reagan left office, I took the National Teachers Exam in another state. I aced it. And I took those great scores and taught for a few years.Then I had a baby, and I quit teaching to stay home with her. We moved to Texas, and I decided that I wouldn't take the TExES quite yet. After all, I was going to be a stay-at-home mom for a while. I put the test off and made the decision to take it later.And then I had another baby, and another baby."Take the TExES later on," I kept telling myself. "You can always do it down the road. After all, you don't even know if you'll ever go back to teaching."So I didn't. I focused on my kids and was quite happy living the June Cleaver life.As previously noted, I had taken the NTE in the very early days of the first Bush administration. And as I lived my happy at-home life, time passed. All the way through the Clinton administration and through the next Bush administration and through the first Obama term, I was blissful in my life at home, centered around my family. I piled my kids into the minivan and drove them to music lessons and to ball practice and to driver's ed. This was what I wanted to do. I could teach other people's kids later on; this was the only shot I had with my own.And time passed and babies grew and suddenly it was the spring of 2015 and Mr. Obama was well into his second term.I looked around and realized that my youngest baby was getting ready to enter high school."Oh, my," I said to myself. "That happened quickly. Maybe you should see about taking the TExES."I told myself that was a great idea. I sent everything to the state, and they told me what I needed to do to get my certificates transferred.It was official. Like it or not, I was going to have to take the PPR . . . *26 years* after I had taken the NTE and 22 years after I had quit teaching to stay home!Suddenly, I realized that I was very rusty.How on earth was I going to prepare?A quick online search led me to this book. A few readings of reviews led me to believe that it was the one must-have for adequately preparing for my test. My friends at Amazon made sure I had it as soon as possible, and I sat down to prepare.I took the diagnostic test and was unimpressed with, though not surprised by, my score. After all, it had been more than a quarter of a century, and I was rusty.I read the book and took the first practice test.It was better, but still pretty ugly.I read the book again and took the second practice test.I was relieved to see that my score was much improved.Over the next few weeks, I repeated the entire cycle of diagnostic test, read, practice test 1, read, practice test 2.My scores began to improve by leaps and bounds.Other than the resources at the ETS site, this was my only method of preparation.On the day of the test, I walked into a room filled with test-takers who hadn't even been born yet the last time I took a test. They looked at me in confusion, as if perhaps one of the other youngsters taking the test had brought their overprotective mother along to hold their hand. Shock registered on their faces as I, two days past my 48th birthday, took a seat among them.As I waited for the test to start, I was nervous and bothered by the fact that I was potentially wasting money on a test I wouldn't pass. I was old. I was rusty. I was relying on a book to teach me things that had taken me 4 years to learn when I was young and fresh. This was probably a really bad idea.The test began.I kept waiting for the questions to get hard.They never really did.Out of the 100 questions on the test, I was confident in my answer for 92 of them. After I finished, I went back through all 100 questions again and changed 4 of my answers. I summoned all my courage, pressed 'submit', and went out to my car.On the way home, I began to second-guess myself. It was too easy! Surely I must have misread some things!I spent a nervous Friday-to-Tuesday waiting for my scores. I had been told they would likely be posted between 10:00 and 5:00 on Tuesday.I started checking at 6:15 am.At around 8:00, my husband (who hadn't left for the day yet) said, "Stop doing that! They'll be there when they get there. You aren't going to make them show up any sooner!""I know," I said, as I refreshed the screen again.Finally, at 1:37, the screen switched from saying ' no scores are available' to saying 'click Submit to view your scores'.I held my breath.I pushed the button.The screen took foreeeeeeever to load.When it finally did, I scanned frantically for my score. I thought I had probably passed, but I wasn't positive. My heart was beating out of my chest and I had broken a sweat.All of a sudden, the number 293 leaped out at me.Not only had I passed, but I had even done well!48 years old . . . 26 years out of college . . . 22 years as a stay-at-home mom.Please remember that I had bombed the diagnostic test the first time, and the first practice test was pretty miserable, as well. The information found in the book was useful, and it was excellent preparation for me. Let me say again that it was the only method of preparation that I used.If that doesn't recommend it, I don't know what else will.I leave you, gentle reader, with this -- if you ever move to a new state and they require a different test than the one you took, take that test as soon as soon as you can . . . within the same presidential administration, if possible.In a couple of decades, your old brain will thank you for it.

First, a little bit of background about why I bought the book. I have been seeking certification through an alternative certification program. The particular program I used partners with a test preparation website called certifyteacher.com. After studying through that website for a couple of weeks, I'd gone through all the practice questions they had to offer. Practice tests no longer had value because I already knew all the answers. Because my PPR exam was still about 3 weeks away, I wanted another source of study topics and practice tests to keep me sharp.PROS:The information that is in the study guide portion of the book is quite good. The charts for Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development, Erikson's Stages of Development, and Bloom's Taxonomy were very helpful. You can take the tests online or using the book and they offer an explanation of each answer.CONS:Although the information that is in it is good, it is in no way comprehensive. A lot of the topics I had studied prior to buying this book were completely absent. If I had only studied using this book, I would've been left clueless for a lot of questions on the exam.But the main problem I have with this book is that, in my opinion, the tests are full of really bad questions that are not indicative of the questions on the actual test. Not all of the questions are bad but many of them are confusing (easily misinterpreted to think it was asking something else), have multiple correct answers where none are clearly the "best" answer, or have an explanation that makes little logical sense. It was incredibly frustrating to take these practice tests. I almost didn't even take the second one (and I kind of wish I hadn't) but I was so annoyed by the test questions.I scored significantly higher on the actual PPR than I did on these practice tests. So on the plus side, if you do OK on these practice tests, you should be fine on the actual exam.Overall, I don't think it's downright awful but I don't think it's particularly good either. The information it contains is good but it doesn't cover everything you need to know and the tests could be a lot better than they are. I think it can be helpful for some but for me, it wasn't worth the $30 I paid for it.

Definitely was a helpful study material for the TExES PPR. There is a lot of material in here (if actually take the time to study it) that was EXTREMELY similar to the actual test. Buying it from Barnes and Noble is way more expensive... Amazon is definitely the place to go.

The material is good, but my complain is , as it states , book +online . When I entered the code . The rea website says this "The code you entered entitles you to purchase the online diagnostic and study materials at a reduced price of $1.99." I tried to purchase it-would not let me. I bought the book just for those two tests. I am disappointed.

I was very dissapointed in this book. I have loved other books from Julia Cook, but as a therapist who only works with kids in foster care, I would not recommend this book. The dogs name is Foster for crying out loud, how undignified is that? She tries to outline all possible outcomes for kids in foster care, but the way it is written I get confused and I know the kids I work with would too. Just too much information crammed in one story.

I found this book quite disturbing. It faults the dog/childs bad behavior for being moved from foster home to foster homes. This is not always the case. I will never read to foster children as I would never want them to think they were in Fcare or moved due to any fault of their own. One star is one star too many.

Be warned, this is a soft-back book and arrived in an Amazon Prime Bag - it was curled over. (hopefully Amazon will fix that).The book is very wordy and just doesn't really hold the interest of a child. There are words in weird spots, some rhyme, some don't. I had high hopes for this book, but it did not deliver.

Great resource for foster parents, therapist, and case managers. Covers a variety of experiences children may face and the foster care system. Accurate and encouraging. Children love it

I like this book, I've read it with some of my clients. Some can identify w/the characters and some cannot. Overall it is a cute book for kids who are in placement, it can help them to start talking about their feelings.

I love the way this book explains the feelings and process of child welfare and the foster system for kids. I’m sure children who can relate will be able to explore feelings and thoughts in a non-threatening way.

I bought this book with the highest hopes. It turns out that it's not a recollection of salvation, but a sad reminiscence of a man who lacks whatever Christian faith he may have once had.I don't feel comfortable reviewing this, since I stopped reading after a few pages (I wasn't getting anything "redemptive" about it), and skipped to the end to see that it wasn't about his return to the Church at all. Sorry, Tony! God bless you in spite of yourself.I hope I haven't misjudged Mr. Hendra. God bless him.

Someone loaned me this book years ago. I read it. I reread it. And I copied out many quotations. It was that good!It's about the author's checkered life. And it's about a monk who remained an anchor in his life. And how he finally turned his life around.I cannot recommend it highly enough.

This autobiography of conversion, unconversion and reconversion is amazing. This conversion story gives hope to all who feel angst because of their contradictory feelings and behavior--in other words, pretty much everybody! I found this book fascinating, uplifting, impossible to forget.

I read this book because of repeated word of mouth recommendations and perhaps I expect too much. I was not familiar with the name Tony Hendra. As a young teen, Tony was introduced to a monk, Father Joe and his monastic lifestyle. The book is a worthwhile and very amusing biography of Tony growing up in Britain. He eventually became successful in the States becoming involved on the editorial staff of the National Lampoon magazine and Spinal Tap. He crossed paths with many celebrities. This was an easy fast paced book, and the farther one reads the more engrossed one becomes to discover the final outcome. A man that probably could have found inner peace with a monastic calling is living "Life in the Fast Lane" in LA and New York and seeks out Father Joe and monastic peace periodically when his life takes a downturn. I was a little disappointed because I thought the wild, out of control times, would be wilder and more out of control, but that is not fault of the author. The final chapter does contain a twist giving the book a feeling of completness. All in All, an story that is at once , amusing, informative, and has some seeds sown in for some deep thinking.

I am loving this book. I say this in the present tense becaue I am going to re-read it, possibly once a year. Actually I have been listening to the audio version and it is absolutely superb. I encourage any and everyone to listen to this book, read by the author himself.His rendition of Father Joe will never ever leave me and it's as if I've had my own personal Fr Joe right here with me. I love this book for all the above aforementioned 5 star review reasons.Instead I wanted to comment on some of the negative criticisms:One reviewer commented, "If you are looking for sage advice from Father Joe, you will find little of it in this book."????????? Wow. I am finding his sage advice through the ENTIRE book in relation to Tony's life experiences.Another commented that this is an "astoundingly self-aggrandizing book with copious namedropping....." EXACTLY! I think this is the whole point of Tony's story. I didn't get the feeling that Tony was very pleased with himself towards the end and it was pretty obvious that the trappings of the world didn't do it for Tony afterall which Fr Joe had gently been trying to show and tell him all along.Another wrote, "Those looking for a soul saving moment can save their money, there isn't one."Well, as Father Joe might say, wouldn't soul saving possibly be a (life) PROCESS and not a one moment in life happening for all of us? I guess also I took the title figuratively."This book containes little about Father Joe and even less about spirituality." My only reply to this is did we read the SAME book? Again I wonder if the audio version possibly affected me differently than if I read the book with just my eyes.One more and then I quit: "...I found the writer so unlikable that it was becoming painful to read." Again, this was kind of a 'duh' moment for me. He was totally unlikable! This is the point! God loves him (and each of us) anyway. Jesus did not just hang out with saints. In fact, wasn't he friends with sinners??? Had Tony been a beautifully spiritually together man, perhaps he wouldn't have had the relatioship with Fr Joe that he did.You can see I absolutely am nuts over this book and am buying several copies ...for myself and for other kindred spirits out there.

I'll make this short and quick.Better DM material in the front of the book, including a flowchart of events, NPC description, an overview of the forces at play in the adventure. Basically everything that was asked for after Out of the Abyss hit the shelves. I'd rate this section a SOLID 10/10. Hope to see the same sort of thing in future prewritten adventures.The adventure itself is a 9/10. I absolutely love this thing. It's about the same level as Curse of Strahd, if not better. Very very pleased. Well organized - probably the best organized book dropped for 5e besides Lost Mines. And speaking of Lost Mines, there are adventure ties in one of the appendices that let you go nearly seamlessly from the end of one adventure to the other (does not include Curse of Strahd, as one would expect, but most other official 5e adventures are supported). The best of these in my opinion is the link from Lost Mines. Feels like the two books were literally made for each other.The expanded setting of north Sword Coast is pretty sick, and offers quite a bit of material that I will use for homebrew after the campaign I'm running comes to an end.

I am midway thru running this and some pros and cons have become clear. (Spoiler alert, DMs only for what follows.)The pros are that some of the giant lairs are outstanding -- just super imaginative, with lots of atmospheric detail. For example, the fire giant lair sits below a village of cunning "yakfolk" (half-yak, half human); this must be infiltrated to gain access to an elevator platform that winches down into a subterranean fortress. At the heart of the fortress is the fire giant duke, tossing an iron ball to his hell hounds that contains a roasted dwarf inside; the head of his war hammer is likewise a cage containing a live dwarf begging to be released. There is a slave wheel turned by slaves waiting to be liberated; this wheel drives an enormous loop of buckets on elevated tracks that go round the complex (and provide an interesting means of passage thru the fortress for clever PCs); there is a huge colossus (giant robot thingy) the giants are building to wreak havoc on others, and which the PCs might do well to plunder/destroy. Most of the other giant lairs are also quite good, particularly the stone giant and cloud giant lairs. (Though the cloud giant lair is similar, and probably inferior to, Cloud Giant's Bargain, an excellent side adventure that can be found used and worked into SKT; another good and very short side story that can be found online is Fee, Fly, Foe, Fund, which I used as a prelude to SKT.) Anyway, A+ to Wizards and Chris Perkins on the giant lairs.But other parts of SKT feel arbitrary and pointless. Three criticisms: #1 At three different points in the story, but particularly in the "Savage Frontier" chapter, the PCs are supposed to wander around a vast, vast region, running various errands that are mostly transparent excuses to get them moving around to various towns that require a lot of DM work to populate and roleplay. My players and I got restless and we almost quit the whole thing. If you run SKT, my advice is just pick one additional town for them to visit after the initial giant attack, and then get as quickly as you can to a temple encounter which should lead them quickly to the giant lairs themselves. #2 The PCs are also given a choice about which lair to attack, which is silly because the lairs vary in quality and difficulty, and the PCs have no way to judge which one to attack. This also ends up wasting some pretty good lairs, which go unused; in my game I required the PCs to visit two of them that I selected, plus the storm giant lair, which is where the story climaxes. #3 The storm giant lair, which is crucial to the story and must be visited no matter how you run SKT, is going to need some modification, because there (as written) the characters are basically provoked to undertake an attack that is bound to be disastrous in ways they can't possibly foresee. I am also dubious whether the attack on the dragon at the end of the story is really going to feel that cool.How does this compare to other 5e adventures? I think Out of the Abyss and Curse of Strahd are clearly better -- more imaginative, more consistent, more immersive and with less of a feel of being just a hack and slay. I like SKT better than Princes of the Apocalypse, which I read and found kind of tedious. But for all these flaws, there's still those giant lairs -- yeah, there's just something classic, so ur-D&D, and so awesome about sneaking into a giant lair, and this is a factor you don't get from COS and OOTA. So I'm glad got SKT, and I'm glad to be playing it. Just wish I'd been more selective in using only the best parts.

I've been DMing 5th Edition DnD for nearly 2 years now. I've DMed a few premades (Lost Mines, Out of the Abyss, Curse of Strahd) as well as ran two of my own home-made campaigns (one is still ongoing). I decided to pick Storm King's up to take a break from having to write for my 2nd campaign and to do something different for my group. I'll do my best to be concise about this premade while still getting my point across and with little to no spoliers. I mostly enjoyed DMing Storm King's (which i just completed this week) but felt that it dropped the ball on a few very important aspects of DnD and where players (mine mostly) derive their fun. And because of that, we went from enjoying it early on to wanting to finish it as quick as possible over the last handful of sessions.**LIKED**- OPENING QUEST -- It felt fairly organic and gave the group a good reason to stick together. It had some fun fights and some hilarious (and disturbing) imagery for storyline progression. -- Overall, the 1st chapter of the book gives a great introduction to the story and allows the players to get to know each other's characters while getting a feel for their classes with many combat encounters.- NPCs -- Many of the NPCs have a ton of flavor to them and feel like real people. The book even gives you stat blocks, and personality/bond/flaw aspects for a few of the really important NPCs. Overall, there were very few NPCs that my players just glanced over with a "meh" attitude. They felt invested in most of them and they were well written and structured- COMBAT -- The fights in this premade feel important. None of the encounters felt like filler and even the random encounters could lead to either a side mission or story progression.The boss fights had purpose and some even had some interesting mechanics (like the ability to 1-shot a boss using the environment if your players took the time to investigate the room)- COMPLEXITY OF WORLD The 3rd chapter of this book is almost entirely a list of "what's happening elsewhere in this world" and includes an enormous map of the northern regions of Faerun. If the party decided to run off to some random town, the chapter had exactly what was going on in that town, what was important there, and who they could possibly meet. Then you could fill in the rest with your own artistic license. Even locations without any connection to the story at all were covered so that you could potentially flesh out the world as you see fit.**DISLIKED**:- PACING -- This was a big one for me and my players. The pacing of Storm King's is meant to allow the players to take their time (the book tells you that you have a year to resolve the plot before the bad-guys win), but the way that it's set up there isn't really a lot to do aside from the plot. So players will mostly just cruise through it. You have to start making your own side missions/quests in order to distract the players from binge running the main-plot. -- The way that the game ushers in new things it felt like most of the game was combat oriented and not so much time for RP. Most encounters started with combat or were resolved by combat. You have to take a bit of artistic license to allow for RP for the most part. There is time for RP in towns and on the road, but most creatures that you encounter aren't there to talk, they're there to beat you over the head. To get some RP in, I took some liberties with a few of the bad-guys that allowed for my player's to try and talk them down or come to an agreement even if the book told me "this group fights to the death, no matter what." I didn't like that. My players had very little time to grow their characters organically and develop their personalities because they were going into encounters where the opponents were all issues to be solved with force.- LEVELING -- Storm King's does leveling based on milestone leveling (in that there is no experience points, all levels are awarded after predetermined events). I liked the idea but HATED the application. To begin, the players will hit level 5 by the end of the 1st chapter. This is because the start of the 2nd chapter has high CR enemies that could possibly 1 or 2 shot level 5 characters, so anything below level 5 is basically nothing to these creatures. This felt very ham-fisted and heavy handed. My players hit level 4 by the end of the 1st session (about 3-4 hours of play). The players dont have any time to learn their characters, get a feel for their powers, or playout any sort of personality or RP before they are beings beyond normal human comprehension. They go from having trouble fighting a single goblin to being able to level an entire village of people in the span of 1 city and 1 cave. One of my players was playing a plucky wizard who was bullied for sucking at magic when she was in university so she set out to prove herself. And she went from "oh man, how do I cast this cantrip again? uhhh, let me think. Gosh, why am I so bad at this?" to a magical killing machine after about 3 hours of play (and only really killing goblins and a band of disadvantaged orcs). She was unable to get into her character or build on that personality at all.- PLOT HOOKS/GOAL/PACING-- The plot to me was really interesting on paper, with all the giants and dragons and their inner turmoils. But my player's characters had a very hard time getting pulled into the story. Their characters didn't really have a stake in the plot. There was nothing to pull them in. The entirety of their anchor to the plot hinges on them caring about helping out the town's innkeeper on an errand and believing the story of a giant that told them that they were the prophesied "saviors" that a planar entity told him about. The ones that could fix the Giant's issue. That's their hook. They don't have family or friends or their hometowns really involved unless you're lucky that a player is from one of the story towns.-- The only hook they have to go on is that people ask them to do these things if they have the time to do so. I'm fairly certain if I threw in another side-mission, they would have taken that over the main plot. There's no urgency and no real sense of motivation to do it. Now I get it that there should be an unspoken agreement among the players to help push the story along (which they did), but when they're just pushing the story along out of necessity instead of because they want to, then it starts to feel forced. Near the end of this premade, it was getting bad enough that I inserted some NPCs from another campaign I ran that I knew my player's enjoyed so that they could get a better hold on the plot and their purpose. I also allowed them to fight a boss I made up and gain a few interesting magical items that they thought would be fun. By the end of the premade everyone was ready to get back to doing the home-made campaigns so they could feel more connected to their characters again.- CHARACTER POTENTIAL-- Like I mentioned before, there's no real way for the players to flesh out their characters. They are more so playing generic RPG character #1 rather than their own personally made character. There wasn't any time given for them to grow their character or allow them to experience interesting encounters that give them tough decisions. They go from level 1 to 5 in almost a single session. Those first 5 levels are usually where a player finds their groove, purpose, and life for their character. But this premade skips over that in order to hit 5 ASAP so that the characters don't die immediately to the encounters in Chap 2. I wish my players could have gotten a little more time to get attached to their characters before they're handed level 5.
