At its heart are six women: the promiscuous Lois, a feminist bookstore clerk with a penchant for gender-bending; her two roommates, the overworked academic Ginger and self-identified bisexual lesbian Sparrow; their domestically partnered friends Clarice and Toni; and Mo, who despite (or perhaps because of) her frequent politically charged outbursts of neurosis is the hub of her circle. These characters, flawed but endearing, are brought to life by Bechdels quirky artistic sensibility. Facial expressions are carefully nuanced, and she seems to take great joy in using small details to differentiate emotions. Late in the collection, when a character receives treatment for cancer, a tiny caret in her cheek is enough to transform her from a fresh-faced mischief-maker into a sallow and frightened chemo patient. What cannot be overemphasized is the sheer scope of the collection, which follows these women from idealistic young adulthood to contentedly disillusioned middle age and, for some, parenthood. All eventually end up a little more haggard than they began, but there isnt one whose Bechdel-illustrated bags under her eyes were not hard fought for and hard won. (Nov.) Life does get better for gay people, though struggles continue, as the determined-to-be-transgender preteen son of a newer cast member and the dissolution of two long-lived lesbian marriages remind them and us. Mo’s kvetching centrality is complemented by the chorus of skewed radio and TV commentary and headlines that strikingly often intones a satirical leitmotiv under the characters’ conversation, which is always pitch-perfect for the highly intelligent, well-educated, earnestly committed, and witty bunch they are. I’ve spent many hours enjoying this wonderful compilation of Alison Bechdel’s “Dykes to Watch Out For” cartoon series. Drawn between 1987 and 2008, the “Dykes” strip focuses on the misadventures and foibles of a group of close-knit LGBT friends as they pursue education, work and love affairs while debating personal politics and political correctness.The strip is funny but also thoughtful in tone. It’s unique in that it features multi-sexual, multi-racial, multi-ethnic characters and continually comments on the culture and politics of the times: lesbian and gay rights, the AIDS epidemic, the wars in Iraq, 9/11, celebrity culture, transgenderism, the financial crisis, etc. The characters attend many an anti-war protest, Pride parade and women’s music festival. They debate and spoof the latest twists in gender theory. The feminist bookstore owner Jezanna rails against “Bunns & Noodle” stealing her business.The protagonist, Mo, is forever analyzing and second-guessing herself (like a lesbian Woody Allen). Her pal Lois is sexually omnivorous and proud of it. Other characters include Harriet, Sparrow, Ginger, Malika, Clarice and Toni and their kid Raffi. They are a lovable, oddball “Our Gang” whose friendships, arguments, love for and exasperation with each other blend into an astute, layered saga of a modern family, with all its warmth and complications. I read this toon when it first ran in alternative newspapers back in the 1990s. Reading it again still made me laugh and think. This would be a great gift for an LGBT or feminist friend.

I began reading Bechdel's strip in college during the George W. Bush presidency. It was a welcome dose of sanity in a world that felt increasingly bizarre and insane. The genius of the strip is that it was fully political but also went beyond it. Bechdel created a whole world in miniature, characters who cared about each other while living their lives side-by-side. The style of lovingly detailed pictures paired with immaculately phrased text that would become familiar to the world through Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic and Are You My Mother?: A Comic Drama was pioneered here, in twenty-seven years of strips.This "essential" collection doesn't include every strip, but it is close enough to get the full sweep of the story. It also doesn't include the bonus materials found in many of the smaller collections. My hope is that someday we will get a complete DTWOF collection - Bechdel's work is certainly important enough to warrant that treatment. Until that day, this high-quality volume is the best way to experience one of the greatest serial comics of all time.

Absolutely the best book by Alson Bechdel. I grew up reading these comics and they helped me come out of the closet with laughter and respect. I bought this book for my step-daughter for her college graduation. I hope she enjoys them as much as I do. I absolutely love these comics and I feel like she can love them too. Although our issues as lesbians are not the same they are in the same realm as they were back then and I am proud to give them to my daughter to read and love as much as I have.

A compelling read, and as another reviewer had said, one doesn't need to be a lesbian to totally appreciate and enjoy this book. I'm an avid reader of graphic memoirs, and in my opinion, Alison Bechdel and Joe Sacco rank head and shoulders above the rest in terms of their writing style, content, keen observation, wit/humor and highly detailed drawings. Almost every frame is a work of art. Extremely, extremely gifted. I'm disappointed that there aren't any more new materials from Ms Bechdel for me to indulge in, for now, and hope I don't have to wait too long for her next release!

As a general review of "Dykes To Watch Out For," it is a wonderful, human series. Much as, in her introduction, Ms. Bechdel critiques the idea of herself becoming an entry point into the culture, she is, but she also presents an amazing, evolving story, that gives the reader a real glimpse into human life and poses questions that the characters model asking themselves that, really, most of us should ask ourselves, at at least one point or another. All this comes along with effective, real-life style humor. Frankly, I think everybody should read her work.

Whether you've been anxiously awaiting the next installment after Invasion of the Dykes to Watch Out For, or have lost track of our favorite lesbian heriones and want to get caught up, this is the book for you.Hardcore fans will be delighted to see that we have an entire new book's worth of fresh, unpublished comics to get us up to date. I looked at how many comics each of the previous books has had, and we have an equal amount of new content in this one. But, for only a little bit extra, you get this thick, glorious retrospective which takes us through the entire series, giving us clips and the best highlights from over the years.If you missed the last couple books - no worries - this will catch you up enough to enjoy the latest comics at the end. And if you've read everything and just want the latest book - you won't be disappointed with everything else included. I've read every book multiple times, and I enjoyed reading the entire thing as a lead-up to the new comics at the end.Bechdel is my number one favorite cartoonist ever, and I'm not even a lesbian - I just find her characters are so human and so interesting that I connect with their lives deeply.So if you read Fun House and aren't sure if you might like to move on to this series, I'd encourage you to pick up this book and give it a try.

Such an amazing book. I don't usually write reviews, but Bechdel deserves to be recognized for this collection. Smart & funny. Impossible to put down. Crazy to see how relevant most of the issues portrayed here still are today. Wish I could be part of a lesbian crew as legendary and awesome as this one.Although I am saddened by the absence of some strips, I understand that it would have been impossible for all of them to make it on to the final product.Either way, I love this book. It's timeless and hilarious.

I used this BEC course. The questions are easier than real exam questions. So expect more difficult questions in the exam. However this is a very good course to review. It covers all the areas and their answers help to revise the theory very efficiently. I highly recommend this for your last week's revision.

You'll learn about the history of drums, you'll read about several other percussion instruments, where you might be able to take lessons, you'll learn about the composition of the drum itself, what it takes to be a good drummer, the necessity of being a team player in a band, and you'll read about some funny, funky mistakes that drummers have made. Perhaps the most important thought of all was expressed by Jeannine Maddox when she said, "You just have to want to do it. Playing your instrument must bring you joy!"This is an exciting look at the skills that a young person will need to learn in order to become a good drummer. The book also makes it very clear that the individual cannot simply pick up the drums and automatically become a rock star with little or no effort. It had a nice flow to it and I especially enjoyed the introduction and peek into the minds of many drummers that were specially interviewed for this text and liked the fact that the book was not aimed solely at boys. The book is peppered with full-color photographs and there are numerous, informative sidebars throughout the text. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a list of percussionists who gave insight into the book, and additional books and a website to explore.

Mark Rashid's easy style of writing and his interesting personal stories made it hard for me to put the book down. So much of what he wrote really resonated with my own feelings about creating a partnership with my horse. His concept of passive leadership was described in a way that was easily recognizable in many personal situations of my own experiences. I am looking forward to reading more of Mark's books and have already ordered some. These are not the "training manuals" of other trainers and his experiences and approach makes me look forward to training my horse and building on the bond of friendship/partnership.

Passive Leadership was a "foreign" concept to me... I have a "dominant" horse who "needs a strong leader." Or so I thought...Well, after reading this book I decided that maybe the "trouble" I've been having is that I'm trying to beat my horse at his own game... When in fact, his dominance came from fear. Okay, that may sound elemental to all you amazing horse handler people out there... I'm just learning my way around horses after a 30 year break to raise my children as a single mom and build a business... So I'm use to making things happen... my way.Learning to be still, grounded, confident, quiet, steady and consistent may all be well in good in "words." But after reading story after story creatively and engagingly written by Mark, I found myself actually "experiencing" the meaning of those words and watching my horse respond with total attention, respect, calmness, willingness and soften... Dare I say, nearly effortlessly... well certainly by comparison to before...If you're new to horses, or re-entering the life of horses after a break... or if you have been at it your whole life, I hope you'll take a moment to read this book and give yourself permission to open to something new developing between you and your horse.

This is the 1st of Rashid's books acquired -- I like the format, his writing style & his story. Needless to say, in a short period I have bought all his books. There are several "great" horse people out there, altho Mark might not have the name recognition of some of the others. Sort of like some of the great spiritual masters -- & this is a Spiritual affair! -- his teacher (a true Master in his own right)was totally unknown, but saw something in Mark that warranted passing on his knowledge. Although having been "around" horses intermittently all my life & as a mixed (veterinary) practitioner, I would never call myself a "horse person". Now nearing retirement & finding myself at, probably, my final "resting" stop at a thoroughbred racetrack, I've come home with a retired bay gelding & Mark's story has such resonance, it forces me to truly dedicate myself to creating a trusted, working relationship to these great animals!Peter L. If you are looking for a how-to book, this is not for you. But, perhaps, you may want to re-evaluate your approach if so.Mark Rashid uses the old school method of teaching: stories. He tells stories about how he learned to change his approach to horses, and the experiences he had which led him to deeper awareness of the horse's perspective. He emphasizes the dignity of the horse's soul in his whole approach. It is leadership with complementarity, which horses almost universally recognize and appreciate, and to which they positively respond. His philosophy is less about 'standing firm', and more about 'going with but directing'.In case you have not guessed, these principles and ways of being are not limited to the equestrian world. In this book you will find one of the better leadership primers you might ever find. I highly recommend it not only for equestrians, but for leaders in any area. You will learn much, in small, incremental, but soul-changing ways.

Once in a while, throughout all the good books you read, there is one every once in a while that stands out as a gem that will forever change your perspective on life and have you thinking for weeks after. I have never as much as ridden a horse and do not ever come into contact with the equestrian world at all. But I found this book magnificent and the philosophy transcends it's intended application to horses. This is the philosophy of life, how to lead and how to teach, and how to be and how to be the person other people want to be around. On a personal level it has helped me to better understand, and view in a different light, some of the (difficult) relationships in my life and also made me see my own passive personality from a fresh angle. I think this book can be applied to all areas of life. I think this may have been easy for me to see since I don't know much about horses.With regards to horses, I found this a perfect introduction to understanding horses and the depth of psych of the horse. I also look at horses in an entirely different way. If all of mankind were like the passive horse this world would be heaven.Highly highly recommended. Wisdom on a page.
