Every child has felt the magic of a rainstorm from beneath a rickety porch roof, or some makeshift structure. In this passionately written m?lange of autobiography and architectural criticism, Cline describes growing up in and later building structures that would re-create the experience of being barely protected from the big world outside. She begins by quoting work from different cultures that reflect nature as experienced from hut-like structures, as in these lines from ninth-century Chinese poet Po Chu-i: "Already I feel that both in the courtyard and house/ Day by day a fresher air moves./ But most of all I love, lying near the window-side,/ To hear in their branches the sound of the autumn wind." Cline has long been interested in the Japanese tea ritual, and the tea hut became the model for Cline's structures. While many passages describing experiences from huts are engagingly sweet and stir innocent memories (madeleine, anyone?), the rest of the book tends toward an over-reaching criticism of all architecture and even culture. Arguments borrow from a broad range of disciplines and are ultimately bound only by Cline's strong opinions. The result lies uncomfortably somewhere in between a researched study of the Hut; a gentle, poetic description of Cline's own projects; and a polemic on the state of architecture and architects' motivations. This is a brave book, nonetheless, that asks readers to try to understand the interaction of one's surroundings with every aspect of daily life, mundane and metaphysical. If I were a student of architecture, I might find merit in this wordy disquisition about tea houses and follies and other quaint little structures. But I'm not. I'm just a schlep who is deeply curious about the EXPERIENCE of building and living in a hut. The subtitle, *On Life Lived outside the Bounds of Architecture,* led me to believe that's what the book would actually be about. Mea culpa, for having brought such intensely passionate expectations to what is a perfectly innocent but drab little book.

Space is at a premium in my tiny apartment, but there will always be room on my bookshelf for "A Hut of One's Own." Ann Cline's meditation on architecture, art, and culture is fragmented in places, and doesn't deliver big glossy visuals or a knockout blow to the senses. Rather, it's a quiet book that unfolds with fresh opinions, and acute observations. It's thought-provoking reading for artists, architects, and intellectuals of all stripes. I've had the book for years, and still find myself returning to it.

I read this book after I spent a quarter researching Traditional Japanese teahouses and their contemporary equivalents at Evergreen State College, and was well prepared for its message. Ann Cline's commentary on architecture and ethics is profound, outside of the times, and certainly out of the realm of America's manufactured-dependent, celebrity hyped culture. Nothing she tells you will make you money or make you famous. But if, like me, you are troubled by architecture that mocks us by flaunting its massive concrete cantilevers or shadows us with its creator's ostentatious erections, then read this book (slowly) and think about building a hut. In your mind.

The title gives the impression that you are going to be whisked away into that world everyone dreams about - your secret place. But in reality it doesn't quite do that. The photography is poor and the diagrams are not labeled adequately. Shame as I really wanted to enjoy this book.

In the 1970s, she crafted miniature dramas of quiet desperation and conspicuous consumption by constructing and photographing tiny, delicate tableaux of solitary female dolls amid mod furnishings and appliances. As Kate Linker points out in her extensive opening essay, the ambivalent relationship between these little people and their various consumer goods has, in some form or another, remained a constant theme throughout the artist's career; Simmons herself calls it "the confusion between ourselves and our possessions." In the 1980s, this confusion became more literal in Simmons's Walking and Lying Objects series, in which purses, cameras and baked goods are pictured with human legs. Perhaps most affecting, thanks in part to this volume's beautiful full-color reproductions, is a later series of portraits of ventriloquist dummies. Atmospherically lit and shot against stylized backgrounds, these figures appear eerily human. But that's nothing compared with the somewhat bizarre culmination of Simmons's work—photographs of the artist herself in the form of a custom-made dummy. I hate to be the voice of dissent here. But Pierce Brown set himself up by raising the bar impossibly high with all three installments of the Red Rising.Most of the elements (original pattern of speech, rich vocabulary, unapologetic exploration of emotional and philosophical undercurrents, unpredictable twists and turns, constant play of contrasts) that made the Red Rising a masterpiece, surviving my multiple re-reads, are preserved in this book but the soul is missing.Unlike its predecessors, this book is not blessed with self-awareness. I felt so far from the characters and the events like the story has been told too many times before it was written on the pages in front of me.I did get into it around the 80% mark. I wouldn’t even mind cliffhanger if the ride to the cliff was real and not a holo-immersion.Lysander's arc was not essential to this story. I assume it builds the next installment and was added to preserve the chronology. But it was distracting, albeit enjoyable. Lyria's arc is shallow, lots of telling and very little showing after she gets to Luna. I wanted to see Lyria's anger and isolation in a dialogue with other colors which would have helped the world building from the inside out.Too many planets to handle: Luna, Venus, Earth, Io. Too many social powers: Republic, Society, The Red Hand, Syndicate, The Rimm, houses, disassembled Sons of Ares. All of these elements are introduced through too many descriptives, page after page. To be a five-star book, the page count has to double. Or better yet, split it into two books with Lyria's and Lysander's points of view earning the spot of the main arc in two separate books. I will not abandon this author and the Red Rising series. I will not advise any readers to not read this book. Just prepare to put work into it and, perhaps, be ready for a mild disappointment the finish line. The hope for the future books to come is still alive and well. ADDED LATER: Try reading Lysander's point of view as a novel, skipping all others. And then try reading Ephraim's, Darrow' and Lyria's POVs​ as intended (skipping Lysander's). It flows so much better and your emotions are not at a constant​ "stop-and-go" pace.

First off, I believe Pierce Brown's original Red Rising trilogy (Red Rising, Golden Son, Morning Star) is one the greatest science fiction sagas in modern literary history. A blend of Star Wars and Game of Thrones - with no fantasy or extraterrestrial elements - the original trilogy offered readers a fully-realized world and nuanced takes on war, empire, and class systems, while also delivering a rip-roaring adventure story.However, Iron Gold - the first installment in a new trilogy set in the same universe - falls a little flat.The revolution is over. Set 10 years after the events of Morning Star, Iron Gold is about what it looks like to rule after a revolution and regime change. Once again, Brown creates a believable world preoccupied with moral dilemmas about politics, war, and power. And, instead presenting the entire narrative from the point-of-view of one protagonist (Darrow), Brown introduces three more POV-characters - which expands the scope of the series considerably.However, one of my issues with this book is its over-reliance on secondary characters. The future society in the Red Rising series is heavily influenced by ancient Roman culture, so nearly every proper noun in the series is unfamiliar to the reader. While this an unique spin (and, honestly, one of the distinctive elements and main draws of the series), it makes keeping track of all the different characters incredibly difficult once things start getting complicated.And, boy, do things get complicated fast.Between all the different Colors, Houses, planets, factions, dynasties, political parties, alliances, underworld gangs, rogue military units, marriages, spies, traitors, sibling rivalries, children, and family grudges, you'll be wishing for a far more detailed index of characters and places than is offered at the start of the book. Kudos to Brown for creating a world that rivals George R. R. Martin's labyrinth of interweaving characters in such a short amount of time.In other words, if you don't have encyclopedic knowledge of the Red Rising universe, you're probably going to spend at least a 1/3 of this book lost and confused.Multiple times throughout the book, I couldn't tell if I was being introduced to a new character or reintroduced to a character I should already know. And, unfortunately, this sapped a lot of the emotional urgency from the narrative when some of these characters were in danger or met grisly ends.At 600 pages, Iron Gold is the longest book in the series thus far, but it doesn't feel as if too much really happens. The action scenes are few and far between, and there are so many characters they sometimes feel as if they've been reduced to pieces moving on a chessboard than fully realized people.I know it sounds as if I'm being overtly negative, but the original trilogy was so riveting, engaging, and personal, it's hard not to feel a little let down by a novel that wants to be so much more than the sum of its parts. With all that being said, there are several elements of the book I can praise.Whether it's an orbital bombardment, beachfront assault, or one-on-one combat, there are very few writers who can capture the horrors of war with such beauty and mess. And Brown is a master at plotting. His ability to create unexpected confrontations and scenarios in a genre so overridden with cliches is second-to-none. At no point was I ever bored.Even though it was (more than) occasionally frustrating, I enjoyed my experience with Iron Gold. I have to remind myself that it's a setup for an entirely new trilogy arc. I am excited for the next installment, and I genuinely care what happens to the characters - including some of the new additions. I'm looking forward to Dark Age, which is due out this fall.

Pierce Brown displayed his skill as nothing less than a master architect and poetic genius.This first of a new trilogy struggles, predictably, to meet its own bar. This book comes on the heels of a whirlwind success, there are new demographics, infinitely more input, the legitimate potential of screen adaptation, whereas the first trilogy was penned without expectations. So many more variables played into the writing of this and so much less time. This is predictable. Sad, but expected.Nonetheless, despite falling short of equaling the first trilogy in thematic merit, character drama, or complexity of plot, this book is fantastic. The tone is there. The voice is more mature. And the story is still compelling. Being the lesser of this universe is still a high praise and Iron Gold remains standing far above what Pierce’s contemporaries dream of achieving. Worth reading. Not worth comparing to his first.

If anyone could manage to give a clear exposition of the main ideas of Kabbalism, that person is Gershom Scholem. There were times, while reading this book, that I was swimming (I.e., near drowning), particularly in the second lecture on the Zohar, but I always eventually found my footing again, thanks to GS; and the book as a whole is a marvel of clarity, that is, a marvelously clear presentation of an extremely complex, dense, and knotty material. I am in awe. Amongst scholarly studies, a book like this one is one in a thousand, if not one in ten thousand, or more.

Great book but be prepared to go down the rabbit hole

As an inquisitive Jew, I have always been mystified by Jewish mysticism. People are always telling me, "oh it's so difficult" or "complex" or "you have to be over 40 years old to understand it". All I was looking for was a book that can intelligently explain the evolution of Jewish mysticism. This is the book. It was even written during the most troubling time for the Jewish people at the height of the Holocaust, though he does not mention this at all.This book is at an academic level as it explains each period about the development of Jewish mysticism up until the modern Hasidic movement. You truly get a clear understanding of how Kabbalah was formed and how it was brought into the modern times. The first part of the book explains ancient Jewish mysticism building up to the Zohar. There are two chapters about the Zohar and then the rest the book is the aftermath with my favorite chapter about Rabbi Luria. A lot of rich information and sources. Enjoy!!!

There are so many books about Kabbalah coming out these days like popcorn. Gershom Sholem rediscovered the Kabbalah and brought it from obscurity to world fame. But the quality of his research, so broad (going beyond Judaism alone), no bombastic declarations with grounds, is of a league rear today. Still the writing flows, maybe the fact that it's adjusted lectures help. It covers the entire historical span starting from Jewish mystics around the Christ era and reaches to the near present, OK, before Madonna joined.

Scholem's overview of the development of Jewish mysticism in general and Kabbalah in particular is magisterial. For those not familiar with Jewish history, some of the lectures may be dense, but this challenge can also be a springboard for exploring more in Jewish history and religious development. However, he provides a thorough introduction to this fascinating field of studies. Note that quite a few of his sources are Hebrew texts, so facility with Hebrew is helpful, but not requisite.

I knew most the facts but Sholem gives a clear understanding of the whole movement

This book has some great and interesting background information, but it doesn't take a genius to identify the author's academic prejudice. Like what one reviewer pointed out, the book seems to shrug off deeper mystical connections with a pompous "hmph" and utterly fails to provide real evidence to support such snobbery. It almost feels like I'm trying (trying and repeatedly failing again) to have a civil discussion with one of my well-educated but extremely insipid college professors. You want an open discussion and exploration about the relevance of the more obscure and older dimensions of Jewish mysticism, but you get The Cynic's Guide to Enlightenment, instead.Regardless, I still think this book is important for students of esoteric studies. Just read it with an awareness of the author's slant.

Scholem is the pre-eminent scholar in the field of Jewish mysticism. His Major Trends is not easy reading, but it's deeply engaging, and you can find new insights on re-reading.

This book is just for improving your Hangul pensmanship. It is not for learning Hangul. It’s exactly what I needed

This book is great for bettering your handwriting in Hangul. The first many pages are for practicing the writing of the consonants and vowels, but as you go on they include basic words with pictures, that way you can not only practice the individual letters but the syllable block formation as well. I would recommend this book to go along with other books actually teaching you the Korean language.

I bought this for my cousin who is trying to teach herself Korean. She was extremely excited to start using it. A lot of the other language learning products skip over alphabet and focus on spoken phrases. This is a really great option for digging into the language on a basic level.

I am American born and raised. I work for a Korean company, with many Korean natives, so I'm trying to learn the language in my spare time. This book is simply a bunch of writing practice pages with no explanations. I don't like the font provided. It looks more like Chinese writing to me than the Korean writing I see at work.

This was a gift for my daughter and she loved it! However I really wished it would have explained what the letters were instead of just knowing how to draw them. Luckily enough my daughter knew what most of the letters were.

Very useful. Got for my 5 year old so that it could help solidify his knowledge of stroke order for letters.

cute but you will need another book for pronunciations

The format is okay, I just wish they had the English alphabet equivalent included to help the learning process.

Great Map! Even organizes trails according to how you use them (mtn biking, xcountry skiing, etc.)

I'm visiting Los Alamos in August to go mountain bike riding. I bought this trail map to find all the rides around the area. It is tear resistant, waterproof (which is good because August is monsoon season) and has all the mountain bike trails labelled and easy to spot. The bike shops in Santa Fe (There aren't any in Los Alamos) recommend this as the best comprehensive bike map for the area.

Nice map. I like these maps printed on a "waterproof" paper and even though Santa Fe is in the desert, I ended up being there during 3 days of rain and this map held up great.

I took this on the trail with me for a first time trip to Santa Fe. It was a huge help for figuring out the trails, mileage between points and generally giving me a comfort level that I was on right trail.

I bought this map primarily hoping for coverage of the DOE trails south of White Rock and the Caja del Rio area between Santa Fe and Bandelier/Los Alamos, since I already have decent maps of Bandelier and Los Alamos proper. Unfortunately, the map covers three discontiguous areas, and the Los Alamos area doesn't even go far enough east to cover all the Los Alamos trails, let alone White Rock. The description is deceptive:: it definitely does not "cover the area from historic downtown Santa Fe up to the high mountains of the Sangre de Cristo" but leaves a huge gap between those two areas.Too bad, because it really is a beautiful map (hence the 4 star rating -- would have been 5 if not for the deceptive description) and excellent for the areas it does cover. I'd definitely buy a version that covered all of Los Alamos county and the Caja del Rio if they made one.

This colorful, water-resistant map is clear, easy to follow, and neat and compact for carrying. It had all the main trails I wanted to know about, already marked in yellow.

The map is very useful and told me what I needed to know about Santa Fe and the surrounding area.

The Los Alamos area experienced big fires right before this map was made and it is clear the author did not re-check the trails for damage before publishing his "2nd edition" because some of the trails listed on the map have simply been destroyed and are now impassable. I took a star off for that as the map was published after the big fire, but only one. It's not like the topography of the area changed, so overall the map is fine and you will only run into problems on specific trails. Indeed, during the summer parts of New Mexico and Colorado are often on fire, so no map could stay updated 100%.NOTE: If you are using this map, ask local hikers which trails have been destroyed before you start your trek and/or be prepared to simply go a different way if you run into a trail that is obviously no longer viable (you'll be able to tell immediately). Don't be a dummy and blindly follow the map on an unimproved trail that makes you end up needing search and rescue later. You don't want to be 7 miles out with a broken ankle because you tripped on the burnt-out husk of a dead tree trying to follow a "trail" that was destroyed.NOTE 2: Please, please pay attention to local fire restrictions. They are there for a very good reason.Other than that, the map is good and I carry it with me on all hikes (with a compass) as a backup for my GPS. I like the details. I like that all the trails are named. I like that it's printed on a special paper that prevents water damage and ripping. I like the colors. I really like all the areas that it covers. It's a good quality product, it's just that a few specific areas need to be updated.Overall: Recommended. It's a good idea to have a paper map with you on all hikes. GPS devices need batteries and can fail to get a signal, but maps never do.
