If anyone could manage to give a clear exposition of the main ideas of Kabbalism, that person is Gershom Scholem. There were times, while reading this book, that I was swimming (I.e., near drowning), particularly in the second lecture on the Zohar, but I always eventually found my footing again, thanks to GS; and the book as a whole is a marvel of clarity, that is, a marvelously clear presentation of an extremely complex, dense, and knotty material. I am in awe. Amongst scholarly studies, a book like this one is one in a thousand, if not one in ten thousand, or more.

Great book but be prepared to go down the rabbit hole

As an inquisitive Jew, I have always been mystified by Jewish mysticism. People are always telling me, "oh it's so difficult" or "complex" or "you have to be over 40 years old to understand it". All I was looking for was a book that can intelligently explain the evolution of Jewish mysticism. This is the book. It was even written during the most troubling time for the Jewish people at the height of the Holocaust, though he does not mention this at all.This book is at an academic level as it explains each period about the development of Jewish mysticism up until the modern Hasidic movement. You truly get a clear understanding of how Kabbalah was formed and how it was brought into the modern times. The first part of the book explains ancient Jewish mysticism building up to the Zohar. There are two chapters about the Zohar and then the rest the book is the aftermath with my favorite chapter about Rabbi Luria. A lot of rich information and sources. Enjoy!!!

There are so many books about Kabbalah coming out these days like popcorn. Gershom Sholem rediscovered the Kabbalah and brought it from obscurity to world fame. But the quality of his research, so broad (going beyond Judaism alone), no bombastic declarations with grounds, is of a league rear today. Still the writing flows, maybe the fact that it's adjusted lectures help. It covers the entire historical span starting from Jewish mystics around the Christ era and reaches to the near present, OK, before Madonna joined.

Scholem's overview of the development of Jewish mysticism in general and Kabbalah in particular is magisterial. For those not familiar with Jewish history, some of the lectures may be dense, but this challenge can also be a springboard for exploring more in Jewish history and religious development. However, he provides a thorough introduction to this fascinating field of studies. Note that quite a few of his sources are Hebrew texts, so facility with Hebrew is helpful, but not requisite.

I knew most the facts but Sholem gives a clear understanding of the whole movement

This book has some great and interesting background information, but it doesn't take a genius to identify the author's academic prejudice. Like what one reviewer pointed out, the book seems to shrug off deeper mystical connections with a pompous "hmph" and utterly fails to provide real evidence to support such snobbery. It almost feels like I'm trying (trying and repeatedly failing again) to have a civil discussion with one of my well-educated but extremely insipid college professors. You want an open discussion and exploration about the relevance of the more obscure and older dimensions of Jewish mysticism, but you get The Cynic's Guide to Enlightenment, instead.Regardless, I still think this book is important for students of esoteric studies. Just read it with an awareness of the author's slant.

Scholem is the pre-eminent scholar in the field of Jewish mysticism. His Major Trends is not easy reading, but it's deeply engaging, and you can find new insights on re-reading.

This book is just for improving your Hangul pensmanship. It is not for learning Hangul. It’s exactly what I needed

This book is great for bettering your handwriting in Hangul. The first many pages are for practicing the writing of the consonants and vowels, but as you go on they include basic words with pictures, that way you can not only practice the individual letters but the syllable block formation as well. I would recommend this book to go along with other books actually teaching you the Korean language.

I bought this for my cousin who is trying to teach herself Korean. She was extremely excited to start using it. A lot of the other language learning products skip over alphabet and focus on spoken phrases. This is a really great option for digging into the language on a basic level.

I am American born and raised. I work for a Korean company, with many Korean natives, so I'm trying to learn the language in my spare time. This book is simply a bunch of writing practice pages with no explanations. I don't like the font provided. It looks more like Chinese writing to me than the Korean writing I see at work.

This was a gift for my daughter and she loved it! However I really wished it would have explained what the letters were instead of just knowing how to draw them. Luckily enough my daughter knew what most of the letters were.

Very useful. Got for my 5 year old so that it could help solidify his knowledge of stroke order for letters.

cute but you will need another book for pronunciations

The format is okay, I just wish they had the English alphabet equivalent included to help the learning process.

Great Map! Even organizes trails according to how you use them (mtn biking, xcountry skiing, etc.)

I'm visiting Los Alamos in August to go mountain bike riding. I bought this trail map to find all the rides around the area. It is tear resistant, waterproof (which is good because August is monsoon season) and has all the mountain bike trails labelled and easy to spot. The bike shops in Santa Fe (There aren't any in Los Alamos) recommend this as the best comprehensive bike map for the area.

Nice map. I like these maps printed on a "waterproof" paper and even though Santa Fe is in the desert, I ended up being there during 3 days of rain and this map held up great.

I took this on the trail with me for a first time trip to Santa Fe. It was a huge help for figuring out the trails, mileage between points and generally giving me a comfort level that I was on right trail.

I bought this map primarily hoping for coverage of the DOE trails south of White Rock and the Caja del Rio area between Santa Fe and Bandelier/Los Alamos, since I already have decent maps of Bandelier and Los Alamos proper. Unfortunately, the map covers three discontiguous areas, and the Los Alamos area doesn't even go far enough east to cover all the Los Alamos trails, let alone White Rock. The description is deceptive:: it definitely does not "cover the area from historic downtown Santa Fe up to the high mountains of the Sangre de Cristo" but leaves a huge gap between those two areas.Too bad, because it really is a beautiful map (hence the 4 star rating -- would have been 5 if not for the deceptive description) and excellent for the areas it does cover. I'd definitely buy a version that covered all of Los Alamos county and the Caja del Rio if they made one.

This colorful, water-resistant map is clear, easy to follow, and neat and compact for carrying. It had all the main trails I wanted to know about, already marked in yellow.

The map is very useful and told me what I needed to know about Santa Fe and the surrounding area.

The Los Alamos area experienced big fires right before this map was made and it is clear the author did not re-check the trails for damage before publishing his "2nd edition" because some of the trails listed on the map have simply been destroyed and are now impassable. I took a star off for that as the map was published after the big fire, but only one. It's not like the topography of the area changed, so overall the map is fine and you will only run into problems on specific trails. Indeed, during the summer parts of New Mexico and Colorado are often on fire, so no map could stay updated 100%.NOTE: If you are using this map, ask local hikers which trails have been destroyed before you start your trek and/or be prepared to simply go a different way if you run into a trail that is obviously no longer viable (you'll be able to tell immediately). Don't be a dummy and blindly follow the map on an unimproved trail that makes you end up needing search and rescue later. You don't want to be 7 miles out with a broken ankle because you tripped on the burnt-out husk of a dead tree trying to follow a "trail" that was destroyed.NOTE 2: Please, please pay attention to local fire restrictions. They are there for a very good reason.Other than that, the map is good and I carry it with me on all hikes (with a compass) as a backup for my GPS. I like the details. I like that all the trails are named. I like that it's printed on a special paper that prevents water damage and ripping. I like the colors. I really like all the areas that it covers. It's a good quality product, it's just that a few specific areas need to be updated.Overall: Recommended. It's a good idea to have a paper map with you on all hikes. GPS devices need batteries and can fail to get a signal, but maps never do.

This was a required book (the textbook along with the exercise book) for a college class. I'm an English major and I have a lot of grammar books, so from my perspective these two Working with Words books are some of the best I've seen. Very user friendly, good examples, easy to comprehend; I'd definitely recommend for someone that would like to work on their grammar skills.

this isn't what I had hoped, it's too simplistic almost written as English for a 2nd language person.

It's a mess of a book. Not structure and lose organization. Major points are mixed in everywhere and good luck finding them because they are the same blue highlight as minor examples...

I bought this book for a basic writing course for school. It taught me a few things I did not know and provided easy and clear examples. I am even thinking about buying it (originally rented it) since I like it so much.

Even though this book was required for one of my classes, it was such an interesting book. It was enjoyable and informative.

This book has helped me with my grammar. I'm a terrible writer, and I'm not very good at grammar. I'm taking a required pre-masters degree English course, and this is one of the textbooks that is required.

The intensity of her telling of the search for her mother's Chinese father and her honesty in describing the broken relations as well as the mended ones make this an important book for those who seek to know what intercultural, interracial understanding might look like.

This memoir of Paula Williams Madison, an African American born and raised in Harlem largely by her mother of mixed African-Jamaican and Chinese decent, is an incredible story that is once highly touching and gripping. It is not necessarily a unique story, the search for one's roots to bring closure to endless wonderment about one's ancestors and lineage, but it's a lot better written than most in expressing and understanding why the urge to source these roots is so strong in those who lack this connection.In the case at hand the author knew of her mother's Jamaican past and that she was part Chinese but any real knowledge of her maternal grandfather who bears the name in the title was piecemeal at best and a confounding mystery at worst. Suffice it to say that the author weaves a very readable account of how she went about her search, ladling in along the way some interesting factoids and history about the emigration of Chinese Hakkas to other lands during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Highly entrepreneurial and business savvy, Hakkas often became very successful merchants in foreign lands and such was the case for Samuel Lowe. The search for Samuel Lowe begins in Jamaica and from there moves to Shenzhen and Guangzhou in China, roughly the ancestral home of the Hakka's and the Lowe's.There are many poignant moments in the book, starting with the author's upbringing in Harlem. Her mother could be the stuff of a novel. Her Jamaican antecedents the raw material for a doctoral dissertation in sociology. What really brings the story home is the author's almost aside that for most African Americans family genealogy that is truly traceable may date back three or four generations. By contrast, in China family lineage may go back hundreds of generations. By the author's calculation her Chinese family can count 159 generations or roughly a thousand years before the birth of Christ. It's mind boggling.Finding Samuel Lowe is an easy read, being well organized and having a goodly mix of family story telling, history, sociology, mystery and intrigue. It takes a special person to pursue a family past shrouded deeply in vagueness. The author, though, is not just another ordinary person pursuing her roots. She brought to the search some real advantages including a mother that was relentless in the welfare and future success of her three children, a highly successful career in journalism and television, a husband that faithfully supported the near single-minded investigative work to locate the Chinese side of the family, and the Chinese family itself whose members embraced the author and her Jamaican and New York family from the get go. Think about that for a moment. A knock on the door (actually an email out of the blue) and then someone claiming to be your long lost relation that you didn't know you had in the first place. It is all these elements that keep you glued to the book's pages.My only critical observation is that once Samuel Lowe (long deceased before his descendants were located by the author) and family are found and a rightful narrative about the Chinese family in the years from the 1930s (including some tough observations by the author of Mao's Cultural Revolution in the 1960s) is provided, the story starts to run out of steam as the author focuses on family reunions that just don't add to the story. Memoirs oftentimes evolve to the overly sentimental and while it's not excessive here it probably best could have been edited out.

I guess as a Jamaican i was a bit biased and felt like she was ignoring her Jamaican side, then i remembered that both of her parents were Jamaican. I sometimes forget that most Jamaicans have ancestors from somewhere other than africa. We tend to ignore the other ancestors we have as if they aren't a part of our blood but the reality is that they are part of us. This book was lovely to read because it explored ancestors that i as a Jamaican usually ignore.

Irene Gut Opdyke (1922–2003) was named by the Israeli Holocaust Commission one of the Righteous Among the Nations, a title given to those who risked their lives by aiding and saving Jews during the Holocaust. She was granted the Israel Medal of Honor, Israel’s highest tribute, in a ceremony at Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial. The Vatican honored her with a special commendation. And her story is part of the permanent exhibit at the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.   Jennifer Armstrong is an award-winning author, perhaps best known for her books of history and historical fiction. My teen visited the Holocaust museum and it reminded me of a story I had seen in the Reader's Digest ages ago. Took me a few searches, but the memorable line, "It wasn't a bird." is how I finally found it.I love the authors' use of birds to show us the horror of her experience without having to look at it directly. The language choices are genius.I also love how the author took the worst humanity has to offer and managed to tell a story of hope. I stand in awe.Cons: The kindle version made viewing the photos difficult. For the kindle version I would request the language appendix be placed as a preface (I read the whole book through slaughtering the words and missing their meanings... only to find an appendix at the end...alas.)

While reading this novel, it's hard to believe that it was true.One young girl who started out as a student nurse and ends up a resistance fighter. She portrayed true grit, determination and luck!We cannot let stories like Irene has painstaking told be forgotten! We must never forget the horrors of WWII and the atrocities that were inflicted upon innocent men, women and children.We must remember that these things happened a mere 77 years ago and can happen again if we are not vigilant!I highly recommend that this book be required reading of American high school students. They need to learn our history and understand the hardships faced for freedom and of those that were willing to take risks and give up their lives so others may be free.I say put down the cell phones, Snapchat, protesting tearing down Civil War statues that they know nothing about and pick up a book and LEARN something!

Imagine that you are a 16-year-old Polish girl in a small rural town in eastern Poland called Kozienice enjoying a pretty, bucolic, and sweet life--that is until September 1, 1939. That's the day that Hitler launched his blitzkrieg or lightning war against Poland and overran the country in 18 days. What can you do? How can you possibly help your countrymen and countrywomen fight the Nazi onslaught and defeat the occupation? The answer to that existential question is the major reason why that young girl, known then as Irene Gut, decided, when she was much older (76 years old) and called Irene Opdyke, to tell the story of her life during that horrific time. She was helped in the telling by author Jennifer Armstrong. The book is In My Hands: Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer, and it is a powerful account of one person's bravery in the face of unimaginable hate and violence. We can all learn valuable lessons from her moral courage and her cunning determination. This is a remarkable book about a heroine whose name was enshrined in 1982 in the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem as one of the Righteous Among Nations for her heroic acts during the Holocaust.The writing style is at times poetic, but the real advantage of this autobiography is Irene's remembering and describing how she felt and what she thought as world events were swirling about her while she was entangled in the thicket of the Nazi cruelty in Poland. It is a narrative about survival and charity and goodness. She wanted her family to survive the terror, and she also witnessed how the Jews were brutalized and murdered and therefore was compelled to help them survive the Nazi inhumanity. This is a highly recommended book.

This was a very good book. I was hooked from the first page. I am interested in the different stories of the holocaust. This story takes a different view of the Germans and Russians. Irene is more or less saved by working for the Germans. She is shocked and saddened at how the Jewish people were treated. She is separated from her family and she learns that she has to survive the war in order to hopefully see her family again. I could write a lot more but I want you to read and see what Irene went thru in order to survive. You will enjoy this book it is worth the price.

I have a student who is a senior in high school who was reading this book for his Literature of the Holocaust class, and he told me I really needed to read this book. He was right. When it arrived, I read the first 90-some pages at work, then took it home and read the entire rest of the book that night. I guess I knew all the big stories of World War II and the Holocaust, but I never really considered the impact on people caught in the middle of it all. I didn't know much about what happened in Poland during the war. I consider this a grave omission on my part. This book has inspired me to read more, to learn more. Irene was a true hero.

I just want to make two comments.One, I cannot remember ever writing my close friends and telling them they MUST buy and read any book. After I finished this book, I did just that, saying that you absolutely must read about this Polish girl's courage and sacrifices while saving potential holocaust victims.Two, I want to acknowledge the writer of the book, Jennifer Armstrong. I have done this same thing and it is difficult to imagine the sweat a writer goes through trying to guarantee that the reader will always think it is the author who is telling them the story, not the writer. In this respect Jennifer Armstrong did a truly outstanding job because you never doubt that it is Irene who is telling you her story. Good work, Jennifer. I wish we could meet over a glass and discuss your trials as you were doing the writing.
