This is not a review of the book, which is a classic. It is a review of this edition, which has been put out on Amazon's self-publishing format CreateSpace. The thing that one does not know when purchasing this book is that each page consists of a double column of text. (See photo.) Maybe some people like this, but I don't. The lines of type are too long to be newspaper style but too short to be the length of a line of type in a normal book. I don't really like reading a book like this, thus the low rating. ps I also think it is deceptive of the publisher to not show any of these pages in the "Look Inside" sample that Amazon provides. pps The translator is not named. Seems unprofessional.

A few typos aside, I do not regret for a single minute taking the time to slowly read this book, and think about it. The chapters are very short and numerous, and it is easy to read a little bit at a time. Gandhi has an easy and friendly way of speaking to the reader, and I found myself admiring the memory he displayed, as well as the moral principles he strove to uphold. He is also able to inject a very light touch of humor into the description of some very difficult situations. Before reading this book, I would not have guessed that he had tried to commit suicide as a young man (by taking poisonous seeds), and I was thankful for the frankness with which he expresses his trials and flaws. He called his delving into many aspects of life an "experiment", and he succeeded in making a positive difference on so many lives.

First, I would like to say how much I admire Gandhi. I think he was one of the greatest men of the 20th Century.But, this book was just plain hard to read. The style was more like reading legislation than reading a life story. That probably makes sense, given Gandhi's educational training. This style might work for a short, thoughtful treatise on a specific topic. But, 500+ pages in this style was just too much.I finally did get through the book. I would like to say that it was worth it, to get to know Gandhi better. And, that might be true if this book was the only way to get to know Gandhi, but it's not. There are many other sources to learn about him. I think it would be better to chose one of the others.

This book ends just as Gandhi's life was getting interesting. In the Final chapter he says that there's no reason to discuss the last seven years because the facts are so well-known. Well they aren't well-known to me and frankly that's why I bought this book, to learn from his own hand about the events that ended British rule in India. There is absolutely nothing in this book about that. However I can tell you how difficult it is to find a loom and a splinter and that Gandhi insisted that his robe be 45 cm wide. Honestly it's a lot of discussion of who was in which meeting at which time while he was a lawyer in south Africa and very little about his civil rights fighting especially given the length of the book. If you're interested in Gandhi's leadership of the civil rights and national rights movements in India I'm sure there are much better sources . I would say that about once every 10 pages I found a couple of sentences that were interesting regarding his views on ahimsa but that's about it. Obviously he is one of the great figures in modern society but this book does not really support that or show why .

I have been wanting to read about Gandhi for some time and I noticed this on the Kindle list and started reading it.He has written this in an easily read form and it is mostly as if he is talking to the reader.He covers his life as he saw it and provides the reader with insight as to what moved him to his life of serving.I never knew that he got his start in serving in South Africa.I think this should be required reading for students as it is a wonderful book and not slanted by anyone other than Gandhi himself.I highly recommend it.

Gandhi's story was a bit long-winded, and he talked so self-righteously about himself at times to the point of annoying-ness...some things he talked about (i.e. his diet) I found quite irrelevant. It was interesting to read that he was married at a very young age - I never knew that, and the complexities of that marriage made him seem more real. There were points where I almost felt he looked down on black South Africans, like it was wrong for white South-Africans to treat Indians poorly, but a totally different story all together with how they treated Black people (i.e. one night he was taking a walk down a South African road and was berated by a white man. One of Gandhi's white friends caught this and got mad at the white man for berating Gandhi. Gandhi said something to the effect of 'Oh forgive him, he just thought I was a black man') - this is paraphrased, but you get the just of it.Still, his determination and fight for Indians to be treated equally was inspirational. His peaceful protests are what eventually inspired Martin Luther King and, to a point, Nelson Mandela, fight for the rights of blacks in America (King) and South Africa (Mandela). So for that, and for refusing to accept the racist status quo for his people, Gandhi was an inspiration.

About the Author

Anne Frank was born in Frankfurt am Main on 12 June 1929 as Annelies Marie Frank, the daughter of Otto and Edith Frank and the younger sister of Margot. She was given a diary as a 13th birthday present and kept it from 12 June 1942 to 1 August 1944, during the period in which she and her family, together with others, hid from anti-jewish Nazi persecution in a small set of rooms above an Amsterdam warehouse. After Anne's arrest and deportation to Auschwitz and later to Bergen-Belsen in 1944, where she would eventually die in early 1945 from typhus, her diary was published by her father, Otto Frank, and became a worldwide bestseller.

Love this edition! I knew I liked Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and figured the others could only be as good - they are. Each book is accompanied by Twain's notes, plus sometimes additional notes.Not just that, this book is a beautiful collector's piece. The cover is leather-like, engraved with a suitable illustration, the binding is strong, and the page edges are gold.This is a bookshelf centerpiece.

I'm sure the book is great after all they are all classic stories. Some dimwit decided it would be okay to put a sticky price tag on the leather cover, one of the advertised selling points of this book. The tag comes off but leaves a non-removable adhesive behind. I did a lot if internet research to find methods of removing such a thing from leather books (I guess there are a lot of dimwits out there) and none of the suggestions worked to remove the sticky residue.

Mark Twain is America's gift to the storytellrer. The leather binding is of lower grade and the print is too small. Justice (what is that?) would be better served if that latter two issues were addressed.

I grew up on Mark Twain and my brother recently mentioned wanting to read some of the books we read when younger. I can't wait to watch him open this for Christmas. I love the set. It's beautiful, has the classics and it arrived fast and in excellent condition. Very happy with my purchase.

My granddaughter is 10 years old and unfamiliar with Mark Twain. In conversation with her, she was curious to know more about, of course, Tom Sawyer. I purchased this complete book of his favorite stories and have yet to deliver the book to her. i know she'll love it. Just as she did Henry Huggins and the like at a younger age.Lois

Mark Twain had a very fertile imagination, but some of his stories are a bit drawn out. He perceptions of human nature, however, are right on.

It seems that Hollywood is the cause of more interest in Jesus these days, but be that as it may, any talk of Jesus will eventually lead to talk about WHO Jesus was and is. It is with little surprise to find that the current pop-Jesus(es) have more to do with fiction than fact, since the fictional Jesus demands nothing and is, if you take the time to read and study all sides of this debate, more a creation of the image of American pseudo-religion and atheist nihilism than a first century Rabbi who claimed to be equal with God.This not so slim volume is to my mind the best technically oriented refutation of the pop-Jesus scholarship and fiction floating about and popularized not only by Hollywood, but also by some folks with big names in the scholarly community, notably Bart Ehrman and Robert Price. This book also addresses a frustration I have developed with discussions on this topic. Often someone makes a hugely fallacious claim, bases it upon some technical linguistic feature of the bible or translation process of the bible, and then when refutations are provided, the counter claim is made that it "misses the big picture" or is being nit-picky. This book addresses the big picture and the nitty gritty; namely, there is a popular movement to redefine Jesus based upon a loose handing of the primary sources and the history of the primary sources (the New Testament) and that a detailed analysis of the claims of skeptical scholars, even their best arguments, are much less earth shaking or even true when taken apart by evidence. To be frank, I was surprised by how little there was in Ehrman to even be respected after reading this and several other works (listed below) which show he not only clearly misrepresents his own scholarship to purposely lead the less educated into a state of doubt (beyond the warrant of his own findings) but also that some of his legitimate research (and there is much) does not alter in any way the traditional teachings of the received text of the New Testament.Here is the breakdown of the book.Part one examines how the Gospels were compiled in their final form, which covers the bases from oral tradition, memorization on a widespread scale, and finally the writing and copying process.Part two is all about what is called textual criticism, which is another way of addressing this question: "How can we know what the earliest texts of the Gospel said, and how/why have they changed or not changed?" This is to me the highlight of book and it is worth getting for this section alone. What we find is that Ehrman greatly overstates even his best cases, and his claims that "the whole epistle or gospel is changed if I am right" is simply unfounded. Case after case make this point. (As an aside, if you ever read Ehrman's introduction to the New Testament, which he co-authored with the master of the text and his teacher, Bruce Metzger, you find a much more honest and cautious Ehrman at work, an Ehrman who is less sensationalist and more mainline in his judgments. Curious how audience/marketing changes the message for him.) In the end we discover that NT transmission is not like the telephone game where you start with one thing and end up with another. The NT text as we have it is, to quote Ehrman's other less sensationalist works, "At this stage, our work on the original amounts to little more than tinkering. There's something about historical scholarship that refuses to concede that a major task has been accomplished, but there it is...Scholars are convinced that we can reconstruct the original words of the NT with reasonable (though probably not 100%) accuracy."Part three examines how the canon of the NT came to be, and in the process refutes those who claim that the early church just shouted the loudest and had the backing of the Roman State and so effectively bullied down the opposition, an opposition of hitherto viable candidates for true Christianity. This commonly held belief by college freshman and watchers of the cable history programs gets a thorough refutation. There was a unanimous rejection by those churches that had apostolic continuity of the forged. Moreover, the debates were different than they are today. Unlike modern theories that try to show that Jesus was not divine, what was at stake for the early Church, and what was often denied by the later heretics, was the humanity of Jesus. They all agreed Jesus was divine in some sense. But only a God-Man could save.Part four addresses the debate over the quality of Jesus' divinity in greater detail, refuting the current trend in "pop-Jesusology" that he "became divine" sometime in the fourth century (or more commonly, at the Council of Nicaea under pressure from Constantine). The facts do not bear out a later creation of Jesus' deification. There is no overwhelming evidence to show that Jesus' identity was reconsidered in the third or fourth century to make him divine. It is easy in the second century, when Christianity was gaining traction, that even the enemies of the faith aknowledge that the Christians view Jesus as divine. The binitarian and trinitarian developments were the logical liturgical and theological outcome of the Church's experience of God in Christ. And as a side note, contra the revisionists, Nicea had nothing to do with the creation of the canon of Scripture.The last section of the book refutes the notion that Christianity as we know it is simply rehashed pagan myths that were `baptized' and sneaked into this morphing Jewish cult centered around a dead Jewish rebel. While one may find some parallels, to go the route of Joseph Campbell and say that they are related in causality is simply unfounded. It sounds plausible, but it doesn't bear the weight of facts. Both the virgin birth and the resurrection are unique to Christianity. Pagan parallels are similar to the degree that they have to do with virgins and resurrections, but all circumstances and meanings and modes are radically different from the gospel accounts. James Patrick Holding's review inspired me to check out the book for myself and I wasn't disappointed. The negative reviews were too baseless and lame to take seriously. Reinventing Jesus has become the new dogma of liberal scholarship which bends over backward to conform to modern pop culture. This in turn has given rise to cheap sensationalism which appeals to pseudo-intellectuals who read books to titillate their curiosity and make good conversation at cocktail parties.Modern liberal scholars like the highly touted Jesus Seminar want to create a caricature of Jesus which everyone can agree upon and which doesn't offend anyone. To accomplish this, they strip away the miracles, the prophetic announcements, the fiery judgement, and the exclusiveness of Jesus. Thus we are left with a beatnick philosopher who never would have offended anyone, been nailed to a cross, or inspired his followers to risk martyrdom by proclaiming him as lord and saviour.The authors of this book focused their efforts on defending the New Testament...and what a masterful job they did. The New Testament is the target of debunkers. In order to create their own Jesus, they have to drive a wedge between Jesus and the New Testament. To them, the real Jesus can be found only in verses which are hand-picked by a panel of scholars, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the gnostic gospels, etc. ad nauseum. This book exposes the reinvention of Jesus for what it really is, a fraud and a sham.The book demonstrates how the Christian concepts of baptism, rebirth, and resurrection are foisted upon pagan myths by sensationalists who claim that Jesus was a product of the so-called mystery religions.The so-called gnostic gospels portray a Jesus which is far less human than the Jesus portrayed in the canonical gospels. The reason why they were widely rejected by the early Christians is quite simple...They had no real value.Another brilliant insight can be found in Galatians 2 where Paul openly admits that he travelled to Jerusalem and laid his gospel before the pillar apostles in order to verify the accuracy of the gospel which he was preaching to the gentiles. Paul goes on to say that they added nothing to his gospel which obviously met their approval.The idea that the divinity of Christ was created in the fourth century is absurd. Some of the 48 fragmentary Greek texts which predate the fourth century explicitly mention the divinity of Christ. Second century Roman critics of Christianity such as Celsus, Pliny, and Lucian testified that Christians drew the ire of Roman authorities because they worshipped Jesus.The authors point out that a huge amount of New Testament manuscripts dating from as early as the second century over a wide geographical area have been carefully scrutinized and compared. Similarities of the same passage point to much earlier sources and the variations among the manuscripts are too miniscule to change the core doctrines of the Christian faith. The Apostolic Fathers of the early second century such as Ignatius of Antioch, Polycarp, and Clement of Rome quoted passages from the New Testament. In addition, the Muratorian Canon containing much of the New Testament, including the four gospels, was composed at the end of the second century.The real controlling authorities of what was handed down in the canonical gospels were not a council of fourth century church fathers but the earliest eyewitnesses to Jesus himself. Richard Bauckham also makes this point in his book "Jesus and the Eyewitnesses". The synoptic gospels were committed to writing before the last of these eyewitnesses passed away. If the canonical gospels were somehow altered we must assume that Jesus' disciples were completely disengaged from the earliest Christian communities or suffered from complete amnesia after the resurrection.The greatest insight in this book which should blow away all the arguments of the debunkers is the fact that a high degree of unanimity in regard to the New Testament existed over a wide geographical area long before the fourth century and long before there was any central church authority.AMAZING ISN'T IT!!! Christians from as far west as Britannia and as far east as Mesopotamia and Syria accepted the same books which were incorporated into the New Testament long before there were any church councils to tell them to do so!IMAGINE THAT!!! Coptic Christians in Egypt and Syriac Christians in the Persian empire were reading the same four gospels as Greek speaking Byzantine Christians and Latin speaking Roman Christians!All this should make it very clear that the earliest controlling authorities over what was handed down to us in the canonical gospels were not fourth century bishops but the actual disciples of Jesus and those who witnessed him firsthand. IF YOU DON'T LIKE WHAT'S WRITTEN IN THE GOSPELS...BLAME THEM!!!I realize that the debunkers have too much time, money, and reputation invested in trying to reinvent Jesus to accept the truth for what it is. Hopefully, some of the MTV generation with a mind of their own will see the reinvention of Jesus for what it is...a fraud.The bottom line is that the biblical Jesus is as close as we will ever get to the real Jesus.Case closed.

I have followed Chris Brown's Smart Football website for years, and bought this book (actually 2 of them) knowing that many of the chapters in the book would be very similar to posts I had already read on his blog. What I was expecting was more of a reference book, something that I could flip through for refreshers on basic terminology and offensive and defensive schemes. Chris Brown has mentioned before that there aren't very many good general football strategy books out there, and I was hoping that his book would fill the void.It turns out that the book is mostly copies of blog posts already on his site. In many cases the only difference between the book chapters and the blog posts are the removal of diagrams and videos explaining certain concepts. The original blog posts were very informative, and I assumed that in buying the book I would get additional material- more diagrams/examples, better organization so that it could be used as a reference, etc. But that's not what this book is.Despite being disappointed, I didn't mind buying the book because of the enjoyment I have gotten out of his website. However, the information in the book is the same as the website, and, it turns out, the website is a better medium for understanding the concepts. I hope one day Chris does write a reference book on modern football strategy.

I have been a huge spectator football fan for years and thought I knew a lot about the game. It takes a book like this to show how little I really know. Unfortunately, the author seems to assume the reader is a coach, former player or professional sports announcer. He uses terms and talks about formations with X's and O's that were way beyond my understanding. I was hoping this book would help me understand the terms and formations better, not assume I already knew them and could therefore appreciate how the football geniuses took those to the next level.I'm sure the book has much to offer for the right reader. Indeed, the parts I could understand were quite interesting. But in my opinion, this is not a book that can be enjoyed by the average spectator fan. It seems geared toward those who have been or are currently involved in playing or coaching the game and know it from the inside. That is not a criticism but rather an observation. Just be aware of that before you purchase the book.

This is an amazing book for football fans seeking to expand their technical knowledge of the game. It helped me know more about what's going on in the field before a play happens and why certain players line up in a particular way for a snap. It is more technical than I thought. The author writes a lot about some of the offensive and defensive formations used in the past and how current coaches have modified them. This is a good thing though because it's the kind of book you can read more than once and still learn something new. I learned way more by looking up the terms and people he wrote about. Highly recommend.

I am an avid football fan trying to get more into the tactics and plays teams use and why. I am also interested in the evolution of the game and the differences between college and the NFL.This book is an excellent primer for all football fans, short enough to read in a few days but packed with useful information that made me want to read more. I also really enjoy the accompanying blog over my lunch hour at work. If you are not pretty familiar with formations, schemes, positions and basic football tactics you might find this a little hard to follow. But before reading this my only experience with these was the NFL website, specifically the Playbook videos which break down the previous weeks interesting plays, and I was fine (Also I'm British)!If my quest for football information tactics were a meal, this is just a starter, but a delicious one!

The work was very insightful on the historical trace of both various defensive and offensive operational tactics utilized at both the collegiate and professional level of football. It highlighted the individual(s) who devised and implemented those tactics, and the coaches that would create variants or hybrids of the tactics to meet the ever changing demands of the sport. The author rides a fine line with the reader not to become overly complicated but in the same breath not simplistic in illustrating and breaking down the intricacies of the varying systems. This is an excellent work for both the casual and expert football observer.

This little book is an excellent introduction to Peacemaking Circles. It is NOT a "How To" book. It does provide a great introduction to Circles for the reader. It also seems to be a helpful resource for introducing others to the topic and helping groups, organizations, and communities consider getting more information and training and possibly using Circles for conflict resolution, to promote dialogue around difficult topics, discovery and learning of different perspectives, alternative sentencing in courts, alternative discipline in schools, etc.The book is well written, clear and concise. The author is knowledgeable and has much practical (and inspirational) experience. I enjoyed the brief stories and examples used in the book, which seemed fitting for the subject.I did find it somewhat redundant in how it introduced the core elements of Circles in the second chapter, and then attempted to explain them further in a separate chapter (c 6). I didn't find much additional info in the chapter on the core elements, though some expansion of ideas previously introduced was helpful. I wondered if the limited space in the book could have been better used to cover additional content (The "Little Books of Justice & Peacebuilding" series seems to be wisely limited to 90 pages). I was glad that the author did address various challenges to implementing Circles in the book.

Circle Processes is a really good reference for anyone looking to learn a bit about the benefit of working in circles. This book outlines why circles are used for therapy sessions, the criminal justice system and in school settings. It also outlines the reasons that circles are good ways to promote healing and accountability. I used this book for more than one project in courses focused on education. There is a lot of good information contained in this little book. A friend of mine recommended it after her school started teacher conferences to go over the benefits of circle processes.

I’m a doctoral student at Boston University. This was one of the required texts. It has helped me learn more about facilitating community and peace in the spaces around me. I’ve become excited about using the skills introduced here. If you love people and want human harmony, this is a MUST read. Enjoy.

I found this book helpful in explaining the circle process. it has help drive my desire to see this process used in corrections rather than longer sentences or other forms of punishment.

Best book on the market to quickly learn about the philosophy behind restorative justice. There are so many books to follow it up with but Kay lays out the basics and makes you want to learn more!

I bought this for a graduate class, but it's a great tool for any classroom. Pranis is a genius!

My family certainly could have benefited from this book back in the day before we learned how to cook healthy food the hard way. Highly recommended.

I am really enjoyed from this book. This fascinating guide contains a comprehensive list of cooking terms, equipment, and techniques as well as a wealth of amazing recipes. This book contains breakfast recipes, lunch recipes, snack recipes, dinner recipes & sweet recipes. I read this one as it said this is a cookbook for teens and I was surprised to know all these superb yet easy to prepare meals that are really perfect for teens. However, there truly is no age limit to those who want to create delicious quick meals, snacks and desserts. Anyone can learn from these recipes! I really like how eating healthy and simply is made accessible to teens, especially for those that are getting ready to head off to college.

As a college student, this is the kind of cookbook I want. It provides simple easy recipes. The ingredient lists are short and easy to fulfill, and more importantly, they tell me exactly how long I should expect to be cooking and how many servings I can expect to make. My first priority is my studies; I don't have time to try and figure out where to buy my ingredients and how long I'm going to spend cooking. Thankfully, these recipes don't take more than an hour to make for the most part. Fantastic cookbook!

what I love about this cookbook is not entirely because it is made for teens but because of how delicious, healthy and easy to prepare the recipes are. Preparing a meal with different in different kinds of aspects attracts me most and lots to choose from so I won't surely easily get lose appetite every meal. The fact that despite every recipes are delicious, it is easy to follow the steps on how to prepare it so I won't easily lose track in preparing each and every one of it.

I cannot say enough good about this cook book. My 13 year old son is really enjoying this cookbook. Apparently, no adult involvement was needed, he can make these things on his own, under supervision from mom of course, and feels so proud of himself. We have only tried a few recipes, but they have all turned out well. Highly recommend this for kids that want to learn to cook and parents looking for a creative way to get their kids to eat a greater variety of foods.
