Thus, this book doesn't truly stand on its own and requires reading both the first and third books in the series.WORTH MENTIONING: The historical expertise of the author is put to good use here. The past feels authentic and I enjoyed using this book as a springboard to learn more about the real historical figures depicted in the book.CONNECTED BOOKS: SHADOW OF NIGHT is the second book in the All Souls Trilogy. The book should be read as part of the trilogy.STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

Shadow of Night follows on the heels of A Discovery of Witches. In some ways Shadow of Night is the better book–the text flows more smoothly, not every single character is cranky all the time, and the pacing has improved. However, it has a few flaws of its own.First, the time-walking; I have a few problems with how this was carried out. For instance, the historical Matthew conveniently vanishes with future Matthew visiting. I can see how this was the only way Harkness could have the story she wanted, but it’s such a bald-faced deus ex machina. Matthew of course knows the famous historical figures of the time, including queens and emperors, which seems awfully stupid for a creature whose very existence relies on everyone else not noticing that he isn’t aging. Matthew and Diana also seem to have picked a very unstable and dangerous time to visit; I never really figured out why they thought that was a good idea. They’re supposed to not make changes to the past, but how could they possibly not when they’re dealing with such powerful people? And yet of course they don’t end up changing too much despite everything they’re doing that the time-appropriate Matthew wouldn’t have. There’s also the inevitable historical trope of the headstrong woman vs. the overprotective man in her life.Diana is still a Mary Sue, right down to taking in a street urchin on a whim who then becomes a treasured member of the family. The unique familiar. The need for a highly unusual set of teachers. The jealousy or adoration that everyone feels for her. (Yes, even the relevant emperor becomes besotted with Diana. Don’t tell me you’re surprised.) She’s also still ridiculously easy for people to manipulate; she does a lot of stupid stuff–but of course since she’s a Mary Sue, these things don’t come back to haunt her.What I really want to know is how on earth Matthew-from-the-future and Diana could possibly expect historical Matthew to not notice (after modern Matthew goes back to the future) that he’s been out of commission for ages. I don’t care how much his friends are determined to shield him from that knowledge, it’s going to be really hard to avoid people, say, asking him where his wife is, given that they got to know everyone. It just doesn’t add up. Again, it’s a hand-waved deus ex machina.

After reading the first book 7 years ago I eagerly looked forward to the continuation of Diana and Matthew’s love story. I bought the second book paying the hardcover price as soon as it was available. Over the years I tried twice to read Shadow of Night. I am happy to report that I finally accomplished my goal. My overall impression is mixed. There were some interesting elements that I liked about the ambiance of the Elizabethan era but I felt the plot got lost in the minutiae. I felt that the author must have rushed the second book to get it published. The plot wasn’t as well thought out and some of the twists were very confusing. I am going to take a break from this series before deciding if I will read the third book. All in all I’m very happy that I finally completed my mission of finishing this book. I only wish that it had been a better investment.

Dr. Reilly’s book is a must read on the epidemic of hate crime hoaxes, especially given the recent high profile case of Jussie Smollet. The mainstream media and social media sites are quick to report on alleged hate crimes with little or no evidence or investigation. They also fail miserably to ask difficult questions and follow up when presented with contradictory evidence. Additionally, many media sites have recently removed articles that they have published about fake hate crimes.

This is an important book because of the issue it addresses -- the poisoning of American life by hate crime hoaxes. Most hate crimes actually take place, but a disturbingly significant number are actual hoaxes, and many of our highest profile allegations turn our to be just that: hoaxes. Viewed thus, the recent Jussie Smollett case -- should the police case against him be proven to be true -- is not a rare event. The author discusses a wide range of cases, which are often unsubstantiated claims made about threats, assaults, and worse agains members of religious, sexual, and racial minorities. He also includes claims made by whites against these same groups that turn out to be unwarranted. He makes enough of an empirical case to support his claim that about 15% of hate claims are hoaxes, and it might rise to as much as 50% of college campuses. This is a credible claim, but it must be noted that it is far from conclusive, as it is hard to determine just how large the total universe of hate crimes may be, as some portion go unreported and there is sufficient doubt that another portion that have been recognized as hate crimes are actually misinterpreted or highly exaggerated. Nevertheless, I only gave this book 4 stars because it is badly written and organized, with a lot of repetition. In addition, the author has an unfortunate tendency to constantly make snide asides to the audience that detract from the narrative. I have no idea why the editor didn't do a better job with the book and eliminate these distractions. Regnery is a well known conservative publishing house and I have noticed that conservative writers -- even ones like the usually thoughtful Guy Benson -- have a proclivity for marking snarky not so clever witticisms. Leftists usually don't write this way, although they tend to annoy us with breathless high dudgeon and outrage. It is unclear what Wilfrid Reilly's affiliations may be -- and it really doesn't matter -- but his commitment to transparency and honesty is clear throughout. Also, his primary motivation for writing the book -- to make the case that our tolerance of these hoaxes is eroding confidence in majority-minority relations that are the best they have been in American history (although more needs to be done to help Americans treat each other better) -- is laudable. His final chapter on what should be done:"1) understand that many hate crimes are hoaxes, 2) actively and aggressively punish individuals discovered to have faked bias crimes, 3) stop making excuses for these criminals, and 4) stop the flow of benefits with which we currently reward these crimes."is right on the money.Reilly's great achievement is to have put the issue on the table, and it is something that social scientists need to turn their attention to.

if you follow current events nothing in this book will surprise you. it's frightening, however, to be reminded of just how often these things happen and the lengths the media will go to make you believe that which your eyes just don't see.

Dr Reilly wrote an intelligent study with well documented hoax hate crimes with expert views from a diverse person and conservative academic voice rarely heard. His sources are all accurate with arguments that promote positive thought on a relevant issue today. It really made me question the climate of college campuses today that would breed so many hoax hate crimes and the mental illness of a person who would make it up. Some of it was over my head but the audience was likely meant to be other PhDs. I am not ready to abolish hate crime laws but think we need to focus on hate group members with them. We also need to remember hate crimes still happen and fake ones are a small percentage. I going to read some Thomas Sowell based on this book and pray for peace among all groups.

I really love this series and all of the series connected to it. Thank you Ruby Dixon for giving me such an awesome and creative escape into your imagination. I love that you are returning to the original group for the stories we never got to experience. If you are new to this series STOP go back to book 1 and start there you will be truly sorry if you don’t. This is a full length book with a HEA, no cheating, and no cliffhangers as usual with this series.This is Marlene and Zennek’s story. Zennek is one of the only tribe members with a large extended family. He is extremely shy and blushes at the drop of a hat. He is floored by Marlene’s bold behavior and is ecstatic when he resonates to her almost immediately. Marlene is the only French woman in the original group of human women. She has deep rooted beliefs that stem from her late Maman and her culture. She is taken by the big shy blue alien who steals peeks at her while blushing furiously. She decides he will be hers. She can’t help but tease him into action and seduce him into her furs.What’s also great about this story is we get to experience when the couple first meet and 8 years later where the last book in the series left off. It is a wonderful combination and a great addition to the series. It is well written and the storyline is fluid with just enough humor, adventure, and steamy scenes. It’s worth the read and the reread and the excellent reviews and certainly the price. Enjoy!NOTE TO THE AUTHOR.....I know you are kidding but don’t scare a loyal reader like that with jokes about plagues. I had a hard enough time reading it in your Drakoni series. You rock Ruby Dixon I own and have read and reread all of your books. Please keep writing!

Ruby once again doesn’t disappoint! I adored this story. While I do love a cocky Alpha, my heart just melts at a shy dirty talking male . Zennek does it for me.This is a story that you could read as a stand-alone, but it is so much better if you know all the back stories. I would recommend reading it after the main group gets matched up. You could read it before the second group arrives. It mostly focus on the couple, and has a few other character interactions. I am so glad Marlene has her own story and that we got to see how her and Zennek began, plus you get to see their relationship 8 years later.This story is full of dirty talk, and the dirty 😏 but also a lot of love and tenderness. Sweet displays of fatherhood, and this adorable line from Zennek: “I will always come back to you, my mate. You think I could leave your side forever? Impossible. I am not whole without you.” Carry on Ruby, continue your magic fingers and words. I will be a faithful follower til the end.

I've read them all. I own them all. (The dragons too). This little book is one of the very best. I loved the overall tale. Good job Ruby. Very good job. I don't believe in spoilers so I will never tell the story in a review, but I loved Marlene and Zennek very much. They are individually great characters. ;)

LOVED this book! So heartfelt 💕As always Ruby does not disappoint, lol, I was just so surprised that it brought me to tears too. Well I’ll add this to my collection and definitely enjoy again.

Marlene is a spunky, go-with-the-flow, maneater. She is SO French!! Zennek is shy and quiet, at least until alone with Marlene! I love all of Ruby's books and heroines but Marlene is my favorite. I honestly thought I'd never say something like that. But Marlene and Zennek's interactions are so funny, endearing and fun. This was a sweet read, nothing really heavy.

I was so happy to get a book with Marlene and Zennek, I loved going back and seeing a story with one of the original women. This series is amazing Ruby is the only author I've read that has kept a series so interesting and intriguing 20 books in. I can't wait to read the next book.

About the Author

The late John I. Ingle, DDS, was a pioneer in the field of endodontics and served as an educator and mentor to generations of endodontists. During a career that began in 1942, he was an international lecturer, professor and department chair of periodontics and endodontics at the University of Washington, Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, and he also served the Institute of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Ingle was also a past President of the American Association of Endodontists, and the AAE awarded him the Ralph F. Sommer Award and the Edgar D. Coolidge Award. In 2001 he was inducted into the USC School of Dentistry Hall of Fame. Ilan Rotstein, DDS, is Associate Dean of Continuing Education at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, where he also serves as Chair of the Division of Endodontics, Orthodontics and General Practice Residency.

Great book. It is not necessarily the first book for basic cocktail making. (for that I would recommend "Cocktails, Cocktails and more Cocktails" by Hester Thompson). This is more like a second level book, Cocktails 201. It briefly covers the basics, then quickly moves on to variations and new creations. And what yummy drinks! Reiner is a real artist. The only drawback is that a lot of the recipes require less common ingredients or homebrew preparations, but if you've got the time to spare and you are serious about next level craft cocktailing I highly recommend this book!

Love this book of cocktail recipes. There's a lot of things in it I would have never thought of to put together to be honest, and they've all been tasty. I like that many of them do not require many ingredients. There are a few that require some special ones and that can be somewhat frustrating, but if you take the trip and gather it together, you're in for a tasty surprise. I've been happy especially with the party punches! Those are great.

Great book! Have used several of the recipes and last weekend used it to fix Mai Tais at a Hawaiian themed party and they were a big hit. Some of the recommended liquors are hard to find so I took the book to Total Wine and asked one of the guys there to help me find suitable substitutes, which they did. Don't get hung up on the brand names, just enjoy the recipes.

This is such a beautiful book and I think a necessity for any special occasion. Who doesn’t love a nice tropical cocktail sitting on the lanai, looking at the ocean. Well, even if you don’t live near a tropical beach, each of these cocktails will “transport” you to your favorite setting.

A beautiful, thoughtful book full of recipes I never would have thought to try! Love that it's organized by season, full of fresh ingredients and has plenty of tips - that are just as entertaining and charming as instructional! Great for me as I'm a novice at the craft cocktail. I'm working my way slowly through the book - following the seasons. I'm sure it won't take long for someone in Hollywood to see what a great movie shaking through this book and the cocktail parties that go with it would make! Until then - it's my go-to gift this year. Cheers!

A fountain of information. We rarely drink spirits any longer but with this book I am tempted to have one every once in a while. The author explains the reasoning behind each concept. We hope to visit her establishments in NY.

I collect bar and cookbooks. This has instantly become one of my most used books. I purchased it just in time for a 4th of July BBQ. Julie's tips and recipes are really helpful to host larger gatherings and make really great drinks. If you have not tried the Gin Blossom cocktail, I highly recommend it.

Count Your Way Through China is a good book to enhance a first level Chinese class since counting in Chinese is typically one of the first things they learn. Each 2-page layout is for a number and shows the character and gives the pinyin and then teaches you something about China or Chinese culture that coordinates with the number (e.g., two giant pandas, five musical tones, the festival of nine stars of the plow, ten major dynasties). This is a simple, interesting and educational book. I enjoy it because it presents a wide variety of interesting information about China (geography, musical instruments, writing, animals, etc.) while organized around teaching the Chinese numbers. Even as an adult with some knowledge of China, I was able to learn a little from the book, as I'm sure children will learn even more. I love learning about a variety of aspects of a culture!

The only Chinese words in this book are the 10 numbers. The "Pronunciation Guide" does not use the standard romanization (pinyin) nor does it even hint that Chinese is a multi-toned language. The text is simplistic but uninteresting--had there been a bit of Dr Seuss or Boynton rhyming it might have been more fun.The pictures are nice.I'm learning Mandarin and hoping to teach my daughter as she grows up. This book won't help.
