Before I even talk about this book let’s talk about the setting. Living in Southwest Missouri my entire life (I was born in Springfield) I am familiar with the local Amish communities. I’ve moved just a bit north of Springfield and enjoy visiting the local (smaller) Amish community in Dunnegan. Mainly, the bulk foods store (hello spices!) and the bakery (hello extra pounds!). There are a few small communities in this rural area of both Amish and Mennonite. This book was set in a much larger community near Seymour which is south of Springfield. When Mom and dad rebuilt the barn, or as I call it My Inheritance, they hired Amish from this community. It was refreshing to read about things that I am so very familiar with between the shows in Branson and things around Springfield (Bass Pro Shops and Fantastic Caverns – can you believe I’ve lived her my entire life and have never been there, despite driving past it twice a day to and from work!). It was a definite squee moment for me to realize that this was my stomping grounds, my comfort space, my home. OK, enough of that, let’s talk book.I truly loved this book and it was a great break from the suspense and mystery I’ve been reading lately. I need to mix it up frequently to prevent me from getting overly burnt out on any one genre (anyone remember my romance melt down late last year?). This book touches on a couple of difficult topics (domestic assault and alcoholism) but keeps it to such a minimum that I almost feel like glosses over it to some degree. I had a hard time with the idea that when Faith reveals that tidbit from her past it’s never explored at all. ‘No man should ever do that’ kind of mentality without the deeper exploration of how it is currently effecting her life and her idea that marriage is not for her because of it. When she does go on to fall in love and choose marriage it’s still left unaddressed. I found that a touch uncomfortable. If you mention it, it bothers you. If you are against marriage because of it, it bothers you. You don’t not take steps to heal from that and expect everything to turn out rosy. That felt a bit glossed over but it didn’t take away from the bigger picture.Let’s face it, we knew from the get go that Noah and Faith were going to explore a future together. They went through the same thing that ever reluctant couple goes through that really brings out the Gibbs’ smack in me. She might leave. I want to leave. She was with that tall English man. He must have a girlfriend. She might leave. I can’t trust another man. She might… STOP! Yes, she might leave. Yes, he’s a man and you haven’t had a great experience there but for the love of gravy stop. If you don’t actually talk to each other and let other people make your plans you are only digging your own misery. Communication people. True, deep, lasting relationship are build first on communication. Once they all (Faith, Noah, even her family) learned how to communicate their feelings and hurts then things can move forward. It took a long time (kinda like life right?) but communication lead to so much greatness. I loved the returning of Faith to the idea of faith. Not necessarily the Amish faith but a trust and relationship with God. Something she had left behind because of the hurts her she left her family with. And stayed away from because of the hurts her husband had heaped on. And a reconciliation of those hurts into the arms of God.

Going Home by Wanda Brunstetter is a very good book an in fact reading this book a few years ago started me on being a follower hers. I have read over fifty of her books an they are just like this one just great. There are times in a young persons life that they are scared to go home after being gone for several years. This is one of those stories about a young mother with a daughter and she lost her husband one day an way to in their short lives/. I truly hope after you read this book you will know that God is always there, just waiting for you to ask him to help you get back were you belong even if you are scared things will always turn out for you in the right way. Parents no matter what will always welcome back their child. Enjoy every page of this story an then get the next one an the next you will never run out of good books to read, always please remember to send a message to the author letting them know how much you enjoyed their books and then next is make you view of the story in a review letting others know. Tell all your friends about what you have read an ask them to also share with other by word of mouth is the best way to get the message out.

Childhood memories are always there, no matter how far one goes. Wanting the best for her daughter, after husband is killed is where she returned. Was not easy for Faith, wanting to express herself in music, she left at 18. Wasn't all she thought, the bars, husband drinking. A story of lessons, for her, and her parents. Can she realize God working in her life, through all of this and return to the faith and the lifestyle once again. Heartwarming style for all will enjoy, if you like Amish stories.

Faith felt growing up in a strict Amish family that she wasn't accepted or fully loved. At eighteen Faith sets off to entertain people with her music and jokes. After ten years of a fairly successful career, having a child, and becoming a widow she heads home to find a more stable life for her daughter.Life is hard learning to adjust to the Amish ways for Faith and her daughter. Faith has to find her way back to God, learn to trust him. Her parents and her need to learn to forgive each other. And of course there is a romance in there.I enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Loved the Jamesprt use (my one room schoolhouse became the Amish school). This book was okay but I got tired of her fearing several things over and over and over. I got tired of premise of her leaving her daughter. And what she was in the English. World was a comedian .it a joke teller. For me that setup as her occupation was not believable.

I chose a 4 star rating because, although I enjoyed the story , it seemed to evolve too slowly. I loved the fact that even though Faith couldn't see it, God puts obstacles in our paths to give us time to realize that He knows exactly what our needs are and for us to accept His will for us! I would recommend this book for anyone who needs encouraged to wait for God's will in their life..

What an amazing story! This is a book that is deserving of a 5 Star rating. The characters were well thought out and their personalities came alive on the pages. The subject matter sure drew a line between personal satisfaction and personal responsibility for loved ones. I also felt that this book showed the importance of communication. I not only enjoyed this book but I know it will be good to read again.I will be happy to recommend this book to friends and family.Review by J MatthewsMarch 15, 2015

Having left home at the age of 18 and being gone for 10 years Faith returns home with her 6 year old daughter. Faith continues to hold a grudge and hate men. Rather than live in her Amish background she would rather return to the English entertainment world of comedy and yodeling. She must grow in Faith, learn to forgive, trust and love again. But can she??

Getting Risk Right: Understanding the Science of Elusive Health Risks

Review

Geoffrey Kabat's vital, wide-ranging book cannot have arrived at a more fortuitous time. As individuals and societies, we are constantly asked to gauge risks―and we often do so hastily or irrationally, with grave consequences. In Getting Risk Right, Kabat provides a crucial framework to think about risks, biases, and judgment. Everyone should read his analysis―at once clear-eyed, thoughtful, and beautifully written―to understand the nature of risk. I cannot overstate the importance of this book. (Siddhartha Mukherjee, author of The Emperor of All Maladies)Some risks are real, while others are much feared and speculated about, but of no portent. This important book by Geoffrey Kabat shows how the science of studying risks can lead to major discoveries that can improve the lives of millions by identifying and validating risks that do matter; or can ruin lives by propagating spurious, nonexistent risks in the public mind and in the scientific literature. Getting Risk Right carefully surveys a scientific field that is often the topic of hot debate and offers a balanced presentation. It is a fascinating read. (John Ioannidis, professor of medicine and health research and policy, Stanford University)Zika, Ebola, vaccines, dioxin, radon, black mold, environmental toxins. The media constantly bombards us with stories about unseen agents causing insidious harms. In Getting Risk Right, Geoffrey Kabat uses four case studies―BPA, cell phones, the HPV vaccine, and dietary supplements―to teach us not only whether these products are harmful but also how to grade information. Using Kabat's method, readers will be able to determine whether the next media-infused risk is a real one. Filled with cartoons, case histories, literary references, and fascinating asides, Getting Risk Right is the last book you will ever need to read on this subject. (Paul A. Offit, author of Autism's False Prophets)Geoffrey Kabat's writing, as usual, is phenomenally clear and expressive. His logical cadences are both airtight and a pleasure to read. His insights into the workings and mis-workings of science, the sociology of science, and the interplay of personalities and organizations are penetrating and precise, and above all original. (Steven D. Stellman, professor of clinical epidemiology, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health)What matters most? How can we use scientific findings intelligently to set our public priorities? Through engaging anecdotes, and a clear-eyed analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of scientific work, Getting Risk Right helps us answer those questions. Perhaps more importantly, Dr. Kabat enhances our understanding of how science leads to action, and how we can better use science to inform a more rational and productive public agenda. (Sandro Galea, Dean, Boston University School of Public Health)An important study that teaches how to decipher science and medical news. (Library Journal)It is not easy feat to take complex issues and make them both understandable, easily readable and interesting, but Kabat does just that in Getting Risk Right. For people who are trying to sort through the deluge of conflicting information that we see every day, this book is a must. (Josh Bloom American Council on Science and Health)Kabat writes clearly, but his discussions of association, causality and toxicology are, at times, a bit technical for the general reader. More intriguing ― and more unique, in my experience ― is his insider's dissection of the psychology of how environmental studies are funded, reported and interpreted by their authors and by various audiences. (Washington Post)Excellent.... A potent antidote to the toxic misinformation polluting our public health discourse. (Reason)This book will provide you with defensive armor against alarmist headlines and it will help you judge the credibility of new studies. Highly recommended. (Harriet Hall, MD Science-Based Medicine)

In an influential paper published in 2005 Dr. John Ioannidis concluded that most published research findings in the medical literature are false. His conclusion that most published findings are false has not been refuted, but neither has the knowledge of this dismal conclusion appeared to have had a beneficial effect on the way that studies in most areas of public health research are conducted, analyzed, interpreted, and reported, either to the scientific community in published journals or to the public in news reports. Empirical estimates have indicated that there may be as many as 20 false published findings for every true published result, and it has become clear that sorting out true causal relationships in the face of the high background rate of false-positive findings is a daunting task, not only for scientific and regulatory bodies, but even more so for the general public. In “Getting Risk Right”, Geoffrey Kabat explores why it is so difficult for scientists to reach valid conclusions from their investigations, and provides some guidance to readers, both in the scientific community and the lay audience, as to how one can distinguish between a body of scientific evidence that is likely to reflect a true causal relationship and body of evidence that does not support a causal interpretation of a reported association (or correlation). The first three chapters provide an excellent summary of the many pitfalls and biases that can lead even experienced researchers astray in the interpretation and reporting of their studies. Kabat also examines how the complex interaction between the scientific community and society at large (including the media, regulatory bodies, environmental advocacy groups, etc.) complicates the communication of potential health risks to the general public. This is particularly a problem for studies into possible environmental causes of chronic diseases, because of the extremely strong interest in the public regarding factors that might have a direct effect on the health and welfare of individuals.Chapters four through seven present detailed case studies of four actual scientific investigations into the environmental causes of disease, two of which resulted in the establishment of firm causal conclusions and two of which, in spite of several decades of research, have only resulted in confusion and continued controversy over whether a causal association exists. Kabat relates these fascinating case studies in order to draw out important characteristics (both of the scientific studies and the way in which they are reported) that differentiate between a body of strong scientific evidence that demonstrates a causal relationship between an exposure and chronic disease risk and a weak body of evidence that may well keep a controversy alive, but holds little promise that continued research will lead to a resolution of the hypothesized exposure-disease association.“Getting Risk Right” is an excellent book, which should be of interest not only to scientists and science journalists, but also to members of the public who want to increase their ability to make sense out of the frequently confusing, and often contradictory barrage of media reports about potential environmental health hazards. “Getting Risk Right” makes a valuable contribution on a difficult topic, and I highly recommend it to all readers with an interest in environmental health science.

Professor Kabat has rendered thoughtful service by evaluating, at length, four claimed health risks. Writing such a book is time consuming, requiring careful reading of abundant literature about a chosen topic, to discriminate strong claims from unpersuasive ones. One wonderful epidemiological triumph was discovery of a dietary cause of kidney failures and liver cancers especially within the Balkans via unknowing poisoning of bread. The bread was made of wheat grown in fields which also naturally contained some aristolochia, a wild flowering plant also known as European birthwort. This plant harbors a potent carcinogenic acid. As of 2003, Aristolocohia products were commercially available via the Web marketed as a natural herb, in an amount great enough to poison 100 million people. This hints at the dangers that may lurk within other natural dietary supplements that tend to be given scant regulatory scrutiny. The plant has also been used within European, Chinese, and South American medicine for centuries, with kidney damage finally emerging years after dose.A second health triumph explained by Kabat is reducing incidence of cervical cancer after learning the roles of viruses in promoting this kind of cancer. An inspiring triumph of medical detective work that has saved a great number of lives. In contrast, Kabat chooses two health alarm claims for which supporting evidence is uncompelling. Do cell phones cause brain cancer or can ultra low exposures to synthetic molecules disrupt human endocrine systems? When a tiny environmental dose of Bisphenol A (BPA) is compared to a harmful dose of synthetic estrogen DES, the latter dose including potency is massively greater, by an astounding nine orders of magnitude. The famous principle of pharmacology, the dose makes the poison, is decisive. It is absurdly implausible that such a tiny environmental dose is harmful. "The endocrine disruption story" (championed by zoologist Theo Colborn in a 1996 book, Our Stolen Future, endorsed by vice president Gore) is a cautionary tale "of what happens when science is hijacked by people who use the power and the prestige of science to scare the public, work the media, and pressure health agencies to pile on the bandwagon and fund work that stands little chance of advancing our knowledge about the complex processes involved in normal development and disease.""There are real problems and there are false problems, that is, problems that, to the best of our knowledge, are not problems at all. Vaccines, genetically modified crops and foods, and cell phones are not threats to our well being. Rather they are among the greatest advances contributing to human welfare. We need to get better at distinguishing false problems from real problems."Kabat authors a column published by Forbes. He celebrates medically useful epidemiology and temperately debunks implausible claims that circulate avidly in the popular press. "It is now widely recognized that much of what is published is either wrong or exaggerated and there there is an epidemic of false claims that gain wide circulation and are not easily dispelled."Society is well served by scientists who can honestly discriminate the quality and uncertainties within health alarms. We can only hope many budding epidemiologists will find Kabat's work inspirational and contribute equivalent work of their own.

If you're interested in the study of public health issues and the many competing forces that infuse it, the first half of the book is a good summary. The second half, while interesting, focuses primarily on the study of viral STDs to contrast the scientific and popular milieu in which it occurred vs the chemical-scare-of-the-month circus. The problem is that the latter lesson could have been condensed to a half-dozen pages. Moreover, the whole book could use the help of an able editor. Still, the first half is worth reading.

Holy Blood, Holy Grail, by Michael Baigent Richard Leigh

Amazon.com Review

Michael Baigent, Henry Lincoln, and Richard Leigh, authors of The Messianic Legacy, spent over 10 years on their own kind of quest for the Holy Grail, into the secretive history of early France. What they found, researched with the tenacity and attention to detail that befits any great quest, is a tangled and intricate story of politics and faith that reads like a mystery novel. It is the story of the Knights Templar, and a behind-the-scenes society called the Prieure de Sion, and its involvement in reinstating descendants of the Merovingian bloodline into political power. Why? The authors of Holy Blood, Holy Grail assert that their explorations into early history ultimately reveal that Jesus may not have died on the cross, but lived to marry and father children whose bloodline continues today. The authors' point here is not to compromise or to demean Jesus, but to offer another, more complete perspective of Jesus as God's incarnation in man. The power of this secret, which has been carefully guarded for hundreds of years, has sparked much controversy. For all the sensationalism and hoopla surrounding Holy Blood, Holy Grail and the alternate history that it outlines, the authors are careful to keep their perspective and sense of skepticism alive in its pages, explaining carefully and clearly how they came to draw such combustible conclusions. --Jodie Buller

I bought this original 1982 book (in its 1983 edition) without the 2 words – ‘and the’ – in the middle. This initial paperback edition is one of the most startling books that I have ever read. My book now has all sorts of highlighting, margin notes, and dog-eared pages that I made in it for fast referencing and re-reading of important parts. When I saw this later 2005 edition in hard-cover and with dust jacket, with new material, I had to buy and read it, too! This 2005 edition of Holy Blood and the Holy Grail (HBHG) is a 511-page tome with glossy pages containing: color and black and white maps, color paintings, color and black and white photos – all to enhance and clarify the content of the book.Because of the size of this 2005 book, there are now adequate margin areas for easy marking, jotting, highlighting, and even adding sticky notes to mark very important information. This book in many ways resembles a textbook. For readers who aren’t European and haven’t studied some of the earlier cultures of people who had lived there, this book is a great introduction to present and explain some of these communities of people, who have ties into the topic of this book.HBHG starts out with deliberate, and slowly-accelerating information for a reason: to build up a well-researched case for the main topic. This, then, raises questions and then answers them systemically. What this does is to have the reader go through a sort of ‘tempering’ process much like that of making a very sharp sword. This sharp, tempered sword then becomes the reader, who has learned to cut away the dross and only keep that which is pure and un-touched.When the Da Vinci Code book came out in 2003, I thought of this 1983 book. I thought of it again, when I read this 2005 book, with the addition of so many fine graphics, especially the ‘Apprentice Pillar’ in Rosslyn Chapel (page 211) near Edinburgh, Scotland. And specifically for people all around the world involved in Masonry. And more specifically for those ‘raised’ in Scotland. Or with Scottish ancestry.Like the Da Vinci Code, I could not put HBHG down! The stage is set in the 1st chapter for the rest of the book: 1. A public library; 2. A book (and who checked it out); 3. A poor ‘man of the cloth’; 4. A Chapel; and a 5. A vast fortune. How could these disparate entities lead to the topic of this book? Read the book to find out! There are 3 pre-Chapter sections in this book: 1. ‘Acknowledgements’, 2. ‘Introduction’, and ‘Introduction, 1996’.Next are 14 main Chapters divided into 3 Main Parts.PART I: The Mystery:Chapter 1. ‘Village of Mystery’; Chapter 2. ‘The Cathars and the Great Heresy’; Chapter 3. ‘The Warrior Monks‘; and Chapter 4. and ‘Secret Documents’.PART TWO: The Secret Society:Chapter 5. ‘The Order Behind the Scenes‘; Chapter 6. ‘The Grand Masters and the Underground Stream‘; Chapter 7. ‘Conspiracy through the Centuries‘; Chapter 8. ‘The Secret Society of Today‘; Chapter 9. ‘The Long-haired Monarchs‘; Chapter 10. and ‘The Exiled Tribe‘.PART III: The Bloodline:Chapter 11. ‘The Holy Grail‘; Chapter 12. ‘The Priest-King Who never Ruled‘; Chapter 13. ‘The Secret the Church Forbade‘ ; and Chapter 14. ‘The Grail Dynasty‘.Buy the book to find out the subheads of all 14 main Chapters. Finally, there is Chapter 15: ‘Conclusion and Portents for the Future’. Here are the following 8 subheads:A. PostscriptB. Appendix 1: The Alleged Grand Masters of the Prieure de SionC. Appendix 2: The Compte de Chambord and the French ThroneD. Appendix 3: Eastern European Literary FiguresE. Appendix 4: The Order or the Fleur de LysF. BibliographyG. Notes and ReferencesH. IndexAnyone interested in history, genealogy, Europe, the Middle East, secret societies, Masonry, ‘enlightened knowledge’, religion, current affairs (with a hidden hand reaching back into the past), etc. will devour this book.HBHG is a book of which I have bought multiple copies and given them out to friends to: read, discuss, and then get online to: read relevant articles on the same topic and watch documentaries, Round Tables, etc. By doing this, we can all share and discuss main ideas and discuss areas in which there may be multiple opinions. Many of us are avid readers and have travelled and lived abroad, so all of us have an interest in this topic.

I have a great liking for religious theory stories. This is one of the best. You will make/see connections with the novels of Dan Brown...and others. In a television interview, the author said his book is not wholly original. He used the (earlier) works of others as research.Very descriptive writer. You can imagine witnessing some of events...as though you were actually there. Are any of the ideas and theories real? That is for you to decide...

The case made in this book is stronger than I thought it would be. I thought a reading would conclude still with an 'interesting theory but....' skepticism. There is no 100% proof of anything reaching so far back in history but the case made is more solid than might be expected.

amazing...the research on this book is incredible...the three authors must have worked for years to put the information together.Their description of the Middle Ages, the Knights Templars,The Holy Grail, the early church and of course their rendition of the story of Jesus..was daunting and believable. Read it and decide if you agree with what they have to say to the world.

Wow! After reading and watching the da Vinci code I became intent on discovering more about the subject of Mary Magdalene, Jesus and the bloodline. No source or research could match Holy Blood, Holy Grail. It is truly the best way to learn about the subject.

I say that this book is a difficult one to read. Well, I should know, I've read it three times, cover-to-cover, and am halfway through the fourth reading. Every time I read it I learn a little more, and make a few more connections I had overlooked before.I must say that I've given away dozens of copies of this in paperback and hardcover editions. So far, everyone who I've had read it has thanked me for giving them an excellent realistic detective story to ponder.I've purchased the "Illustrated" hardcover edition recently as the earlier tome is getting quite "dog-eared" by now, and I simply LOVE that edition!I would recommend this book to anyone with an inquiring mind.

A TV scriptwriter, a novelist, and a psychologist set out to convince us that the bloodline of Jesus of Nazareth exists in France to this day. Of course, you pretty much need their combined imaginations and strong bent towards conspiracy theories to arrive at that conclusion. One could rationally dismiss most of their evidence as coincidence, but then you would not have a book or a TV program, would you?As in most conspiracy theory books the authors pile on numerous coincidences, few of which are significant, in an effort to construct a coherent story of a dark sinister secret known only to a few. The usual: "throw enough stuff at the wall and some of it is bound to stick', approach is all too evident. All the same, probably a necessary read for devotees or detractors of The DeVinci code. But don't suspend your intelligence. The thesis is about as valid as that attributing the Kennedy Assassination to the plot between Jackie and LBJ.But then, I know some folks who are convinced of that one, too.

C. S. Lewis would doubtless have scoffed at the idea of a reference book about himself, just as he disapproved of university courses devoted to modern authors on the sensible ground that "helps" to reading them are not needed and come between the writer and his audience.Nonetheless, students and "fans" of the great Christian apologist and literary scholar now are offered two thick compendia on his life and work. Each has its virtues and faults, and both are worthwhile investments - though not a substitute for the straight, unfiltered Lewis. The "Companion and Guide", reviewed here, is the production of one man, who has devoted almost his entire adult lifetime to editing and writing about Lewis. The rival "C. S. Lewis Readers' Encyclopedia" is a composite work whose contributors range from giants in the field to eager amateurs. When he first met C. S. Lewis in June 1963, Walter Hooper was an American schoolteacher who had dropped out of studying for the Episcopal priesthood and never gotten started as a graduate student in literature. Instantly star-struck, he volunteered to help with secretarial chores. Within a few months Lewis was dead of a heart attack, and this 32-year-old foreigner, whose academic credentials consisted of a master's degree in education and who had never published a word on any Lewisan topic, improbably became the great man's de facto literary executor. Within a year he had edited the first collected edition of Lewis' poems, and he has worked at the same stand ever since. The double meaning of the present volume's title is no accident. The book is a companion and guide to readers of Lewis' work, but Lewis has also been, metaphorically, a lifetime companion and guide to Walter Hooper."Companion and Guide" weighs in at almost a thousand pages (twice the length of the "Readers' Encyclopedia"). It leads off with a hundred page biography that may well be the best life of Lewis yet written (not that the competition is very formidable). The next and longest section discusses each of CSL's books, with the inexplicable omission of "The Allegory of Love", his seminal tome on courtly love and medieval poetry. Of greatest interest are the accounts of how the works came to be written, which draw on Lewis' vast, incompletely published correspondence and on conversations with his large circle of friends. Also provided are epitomes, which are useful for reference but sometimes flabby, and haphazard excerpts from book reviews. The last feature calls attention to one of the Companion's defects: Hooper is too much a Lewis partisan to pay much attention to detractors. The uniform, almost gushing, praise of the quotations is not representative of contemporary reaction to Lewis. It would be very surprising if smashing modern idols had made him popular among the high priests of idolatry.Closely related to the discussions of the works are short essays on "Key Ideas". Relatively long pieces summarize Lewis' positions on such topics as "Imagination", "Natural Law" and "Reason". Shorter ones range from "Bulverism" to "Monarchy" to "Quiddity". These rapid presentations of Lewis' point of view, quoting liberally from his own words, are excellent as far as they go, but have little critical depth.Next come a "Who's Who" of people who were important to Lewis, a miscellaneous "What's What" of places, organizations, concepts, terms and facts ("The Kilns", "Oxford University Socratic Club", "Anthroposophy", "Don(s)", "Stage Plays of the Chronicles of Narnia") that relate to Lewis in some fashion, and an 84 page bibliography of everything by Lewis that had appeared in print through about 1996.The strength of the Companion is the immense fund of information that it provides. Its weaknesses are the author's uncritical devotion to his subject and the lacunae in those areas that don't interest him. The academic side of Lewis' career, in particular, is underdeveloped. One finds little about the controversy over the Oxford English curriculum, in which Lewis played a prominent role. As already noted, "The Allegory of Love", which made CSL's reputation as a scholar, gets scant notice. Important essays like "What Chaucer Really Did to Il Filostrato", "Donne and Seventeenth Century Love Poetry" and "The Fifteenth-Century Heroic Line" receive none at all.The readers who will find the Companion most useful (and will prefer it to the Readers' Encyclopedia) are those who are interested in CSL primarily as a Christian thinker and novelist and who are more concerned with gaining a fuller appreciation of his writings than in examining what others have written about him.Since another reviewer has raised it, one must address the question of Mr. Hooper's reliability. When he first came to Lewis studies, a callow outsider abruptly elevated beyond his expectations or deserts, he sought to enhance his statute by falsely claiming a long and intimate association with Lewis. That was a foolish course of action and gained enemies who have hounded him for decades with increasingly sensational accusations. I have no way to judge whether any or all of the charges are well-founded, but they are mostly of interest to biographers of Hooper, not to students of Lewis. Save in marginal areas and subject to normal human frailty, there is no valid reason to impugn the Companion's accuracy. One may leave the last word on this topic to the Readers' Encyclopedia, which, in the course of a far from flattering article about Mr. Hooper, calls the Companion a "landmark volume". Its author may, for all I know, be a bad man, but he is a good encyclopedist.

Companion and Guide is the sort of reference book that almost always answers the specific question you came in search of and yet whets your appetite for the original texts. I suspect that it would have this effect even on someone who had not yet read the originals.Immensely helpful for teachers even if they know Lewis very well. For example, Peter Kreeft's excellent talk on "Til We Have Faces" (available on his website) seems to have been built around Hooper's entry in this book.It was a great help to me in teaching the Ransom trilogy.Warning: if you are prone -- as I am-- to the vice of curiosity, this book is not always a time-saver. You will find yourself browsing when you meant to be only verifying a fact or running down a citation.Because of the excellent little book that she wrote on Narnia, I would hesitate to speak ill of Kathryn Lindskoog even if she were still alive and had not died what I consider to be a heroic Christian death. That said, it would be foolhardy in the extreme to let her later attacks on Hooper (some perhaps just, some quite bizarre, personal, and unsubstantiated) so poison your judgment about him that you miss out on this monumental acheivement.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. For some reason, I thought it was just a biography, but it is so much more. It should help me to better understand C. S. Lewis and his writings and to understand the world he inhabited. It is so worth the money and I have bought it for someone else and recommended it to others.

Beware! I thought I was downloading a large reference book on C.S. Lewis because it indicates 960 pages. However, it is a VERY SMALL file. Says it will take about an hour to read. I will return it when I can find time to call Amazon.com

Debates persist between laypeople and scholars regarding who has the best claim to Mr. Lewis. Some say the "true Lewis," whatever that means, is the sole provenance of his self-proclaimed experts, while others insist that he belongs to his readers. Lewis actually had a say on the matter. He got incensed over the idea that anyone could know a person based on his books, as many have attempted to claim. Thankfully, we have kind Uncle Wally's Companion and Guide to the man and his works, and he does an admirable job of bringing both to life. Mr. Hooper has never felt the pressure of bowing to the guild--nor did Lewis--and as a result his writing is, for lack of a better term, down-to-earth. Having said that, it's hard to say how well someone who only knew Lewis for a few months before his death can know the man himself, but let's admit it: he is one of the few people who actually ever lived with Lewis, and Lewis was particularly forthcoming in sharing his life with Hooper, to the point of giving him access to all of his papers. If that isn't an endorsement, I don't know what is. He trusted Mr. Hooper's instincts, and, as a result, so do I. You want to get a deeper insight into Jack and his works? Read this book.

good information for research.

Hooper gives guides readers through Lewis' works giving bot literary and critical comments as well as connecting those works with biographical information.

Authoritative, well-organized, and very interesting.

Traditional Hula is a sacred dance expressed through the entire "beingness" of the dancer. Kumu Mahea has shared her workbook to ground the dancer in Hawaiian history, language, song, ritual, and ceremony of this age-old culture. A scholar and an artist, she offers an introduction for serious study based on the wisdom passed on from her teachers, an honor to the rich legacy of Hawai'i.

I anticipated the arrival of this book. I am carefully reading it now to reinforce what I do know and broaden my understanding of the hula I love. The contents point to a good overview of Hawaiian hula.

Kumu Mahea distills years of dedicated learning, practice, and teaching into a clear presentation. Readers who are hula students will be rewarded with a solid foundation of information. Those who are not hula students also benefit from receiving accurate information about why hula is so meaningful. This volume should be required reading for anyone interested in Hawaiian culture.

Nto only did I purchase one for myself, but one foe each of my students~ Kumu is not only thorough, detailed, respectful of the culture, but leads us deeply into it, giving the reasons for and behind hula protocol, etiquette, and reverence. She shares `oli (chants) and the reasos for them, which is a treasure in itself. I f you are a lover of hula, but Hawaiian culture is not yours by birth, this book is a MUST HAVE! Read it, cover-to-cover, full of knowledge and super helpful for reference!

This is a very comprehensive handbook. It is a must for hula dancers and for those wanting to understand the history and the practice of hula.

Good read, great pictures.

I love this book!

Hula requires a lot of respect. This book emphasizes the need of respect to learn to dance hula. The author honors her past teachers and shares her experiences. A good guide for basic hula vocabulary and intro to the culture of hula. I wish it included a music cd.

I've read pretty much all of Parker's true crime accounts especially the ones included in this box set. All are compelling reads. Each one of these included in this set will keep you captivated for hours. The cases are well researched, nicely laid out and expertly delivered. 7 True Crime books for the price of 1!!! I'd wager most fans of true crime will be very happy with this purchase. Highly recommend it!

This is terrifying, brutal accounts of serial killers & the author doesn't leave anything out. I like how he categorized the books &described each serial killer in depthThe book on serial killer groupies was a first for me , and I have often wondered why these women have even a slight interest in men who have committed the most vile acts on humans & fall in love or even marry these psychos . I do have somewhat of a grasp on why they do interact with such men & the consequences one such groupie paid. This set is one of a kind , for sure but I do look forward to reading more from this author.

Where did all the positive reviews come from? The books are simply boring. I really wanted to like these I just could not. I enjoy true crime, mysteries, and suspense just not these.

This boxed set of 7 true crime books is a great deal! RJ always puts forth well researched books that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys reading true crime.

Waste of time & money. Repetitious to the point of distraction, poorly organized (one paragraph from a completely unrelated chapter pops up in the middle of another story), author's writing style is dry as desert sand.

I have read vol. 1 & loved it & now just finished vol. 2. I have always loved reading about true crime & what makes people act like they do. RJ Parker really keeps the readers interest & you find that you can't put the book down. These books are well written & very insightful. Looking forward to vol. 3! Thank you.

If you love true crime books, this is a great book to read. Not only does it tell about the crime, but you get a background of the childhood history of the criminal. Plus the sentence of the criminal.

Some great stories, others have been written about many times. Would recommend as there were some I really enjoyed Well written and easy to read
