Kristen has a wonderful writing style. This book did not disappoint. I think I own every book she has writtem. Can't wait for the next one!

I'm not familiar with inspirational fiction, but I had heard very good things about Kristin Heitzmann, so I thought I would give this a try, along with one other of her works (A Rush of Wings.) Heitzmann's prose style is good and fluid--a must for me to find any book I read enjoyable, and she does an adequate job of creating a suspenseful atmosphere, as Alessi starts to realize that the town may not be what seems, and the mystery behind Charity's facade is slowly revealed. However, there are a few things I didn't care for in the book. First, Steve's distrustful attitude toward Alessi grated on me, to the point that it interfered with my ability to warm up to him. Second, I felt that Alessi's supposed "spunkiness" became rather irritating after she starts realizing she's being stalked. Her refusal to leave the room in the shop where she sleeps to go stay with Steve and his family after her stalker has just assaulted her with a bucket of ice water *on her very doorstep* is a case in point. The stalker has demonstrated that he knows where she lives and that he is willing to harm her; I don't care how much she wants to have a place of her own, that's veering into "too stupid to live" territory.I also have a few problems surrounding the substance of "the pact." Without giving away spoilers, I'll just say I found it very unlikely that things could have gotten as out of hand as they did without the police being involved, and Pastor Welsh's ability to create this pact and enforce it on the town carries some rather creepy "Jim Jonesish" overtones. Still, the way Heitzmann draws out the mystery of the pact is very well done and definitely kept me turning pages to find out what happened next. Overall, this was an engaging book, but probably not one that I'll feel any compulsion to reread.

I had mixed feelings about this book, based solely on the notes of other reviewers. How glad I am that I took the time to read it for myself! Kristen Heitzmann, again, took me to a place I was loathe to leave.21 year old Alessi is a truly unique character, & one cannot help but love her. Through all of her struggles, which include being orphaned by 12 & unwanted by any of her biological family, she maintains her wry humor, warm heart, & non-judgemental spirt, along with her belief in miracles. Quick to forgive & offer a second-chance, Alessi is not about to take a handout from anyone. And oh, how she longs to belong somewhere!Steve is scarred by women, having been abandoned as a boy by his mother & then again in adulthood by his fiancee. He's preparing to endure his first Christmas since his elderly father passed away. Gruff & bear-like, the reader knows the only way this boy's shell is going to crack is through the gentle, unassuming presence of Alessi. The characters are lovingly developed, continuing to grow throughout the book as they learn more about God, themselves, & those around them. I found myself rooting for each one as they faced minor to catastrophic challenges. Even Carl, who I was pre-disposed to dislike, had gained my empathy by the end. This is a beautiful story about God, love, forgiveness, faith, & miracles. The characters wormed their way into my heart & left me aching for their happiness. I personally could have used another chapter or two; perhaps merely an epilogue. I was not ready to let this story end. Instead I guess I'll just get a few more of Heitzmann's books.

New author, new favorite. Fantastic! Blew my socks off. Most books play nice, but this one had real people, real problems, real solutions. I wondered from the very beginning where we were going with the halos, and I loved every second. I could picture different people and places with halos. I really loved the different perspectives and different challenges.Evil really exists and the consequences of sin, Carl's family's lifelong sin problems. God was in this book, but not in the yea right way, in the real believable way!I could imagine being Alessi, but I can imagine being Steve too. Who really knew if Alessi was serious about what happened, or it was truly as she was saying. Can you imagine being Alessi, thinking you saw the Halos and stopped in this quaint little town, Charity, loving seeing snow fall for the FIRST time, and someone STEALS your car. Then NO ONE believes you?Excellent story, one that I have never heard. I loved every minute of it.

I found it very, very easy to loose myself in this book. Kristen Heitzmann does an excellent job of bringing the characters in this book to life. Alessi Moore is stranded in a town that makes it no secret her presence is not welcome. She's faced with horrible obstacles that would send most warm bodies running with their tail between their legs, but not Alessi. She stood firm and refused to leave, but she did it with a compassion that definitely put my spirit in check when I was reminded of all the times I could have loved instead of fought. I originally bought this book so I could have something to read during my lunch hour. Instead, I had it read the very weekend I bought it. The romance in this book was perfectly balanced which further affirms my love of Kristen Heitsmann's writing. She does not shy away from true human affection and emotion but she also doesn't cross the fine line of over or under doing it. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves a good romance/suspense novel without compromising their faith.

I loved this book, as I have with all that I have read by Kristen Heitzmann to date. This one had a little more magical quality to it, but not unbelievable. I was cheering for Alessi and wanted her to find her place in the world. The slow unfolding of her relationship with Steve was very engaging. He kept looking for some inconsistency in her story because she seemed too good to be true, especially to a cynical, been hurt before type of guy.

I read this one straight through, couldn’t put it down. I laughed, I cried, I felt what they were feeling.

I attended a Guy Tal "Talk" and was incredibly inspired by him. He told us about his new book soon to be released. I told him I had a love hate relationship with Photoshop and he said most do, but my new book will possibly change that relationship. I received it two days ago and have been devouring it. This is not your normal instructional book on Photoshop. Guy leads you from the artistic visualization to the digital realization of a printed image. He lightly addresses the critical components of a digital image unlike any other authors I've read. This will be a game changer for me!

I bought this book and could barely put it down for 3 days. Not only is it one of the best books I’ve seen in years on how to develop and execute a straight forward work flow for one’s photographs using Photoshop BUT, the author causes one to ponder “what do I want the final photo to look like”? Is it a straight forward recording of what one visualized thru the lense, or is there an emotional thread to follow?

Really nice guide to the Photoshop tools of interest to anyone using Photoshop to process fine art photography, not just for landscape photographers! Cuts nicely through the bloatware that has crept into the product to let you take full advantage of the current versions.

Guy Tal is a great writer and photographer. I could not put the book down because of the combination of outstanding images and writing. Tal is a strong advocate of Ansel Adams’ concept of scene visualization, he’s renewed my interest in photography.

This book is so much more than a "how to" on photoshop. Mr. Tal gets at the reasons to take photographs, and how to express yourself through your art. Highly recommended for any landscape photographer!

Easy to follow and understand.

Guy Tal’s latest book is The Landscape Photographer’s Guide to Photoshop a Visualization-Driven Workflow published by Rocky Nook. This book also covers the creative visualization process that supports quality nature photography. The author covers digital basics including histograms and image analysis. I liked the section on defect gaps which identified types of image problems and prescribed solutions. He has provided sensible suggestions for setting up your computer and establishing a Photoshop workflow. he author advises the use of ACR and Photoshop with a minimal use of Lightroom for editing based on the more powerful tools available in Photoshop. I use Lightroom to do the simple editing and when I need more precise or complicated work done I will do it Photoshop. In addition raw conversion and Photoshop basics are explained. Adjustments, Layers, cropping and other editing techniques are covered as well. There is a large section on black and white images which I found useful. In particular the use of multiple filters to improve image quality. I have been using Nik software but Guy has made points here that has me reconsidering using Photoshop for certain black and white images instead. There is also section on blending images. My interest was piqued by the focus stacking and mitigation of noise discussions which I will incorporate these processes in my workflow. The last two chapters are using images and a recap of the workflow. In conclusion this is a concise, clearly written book that covers most Photoshop areas that a landscape photographer would use. It is not intended to cover all Photoshop features, such a book could be close to a thousand pages.

It's not a new idea to suggest that to create photographic art, it is useful to visualize how the image will look after it has been manipulated by the photographer, to reveal something not only of the subject but also of how the photographer expresses himself. Ansel Adams did that almost seventy-five years ago. What Guy Tal does is to update that to the modern digital age in a clear and concise manner.Tal begins his book with a theoretical foundation, providing a brief history of art and explaining what he means by visualization. He explores the nature of the digital process, emphasizing the importance of analyzing the steps that must be taken to alter the captured image to look like the visualized image. In the second part of the book, he explains the practical tools that are available in Adobe Photoshop for these alterations.Tal is didactic and opinionated. He does not believe that merely showing the beauty of a landscape that exists without altering its image to impose the photographer's vision can create great Art. (In fact, I wondered if he thought that any mere creation of a realistic view could be Art.) He dismisses Lightroom as being totally inadequate for creating Art. Precise local adjustments are almost always essential to create Art. This is not a book to learn how to use Photoshop. The author only talks about those tools that he uses in making adjustments to his landscape photographs. (You probably noticed that I keep capitalizing Art. Tal doesn't do this, but I felt as if he did.)I don't completely disagree with Tal. I usually send the images I want to keep from Lightroom to Photoshop because the Photoshop selection tools allow me a degree of precision in applying tone, color and other adjustments that is just beyond Lightroom. On the other hand, Tal would save many of the global adjustments that I make in Lightroom for Photoshop. And although he acknowledges the possibility that a great image can be produced in Lightroom, he seems to say it is highly unlikely.Even though I'm not on all fours with the author, I think the light that he throws on Photoshop's capabilities is important for anyone who is interested in maximizing the opportunity to create Art. As I said in my review of his book "More Than a Rock: Essays on Art, Creativity, Photography, Nature, and Life", Tal makes me question my behavior and practices as an artist, which is not a bad thing. I have already determined to return to several of the photographs that I've already created and to burnish them further with the techniques he advocates. The book claims to be aimed at landscape photographers, but I believe that the theory and practices which the author advocates have their place with other genres of photography.Tal spends very little of this book telling you how to develop the visualization that's essential to his process. There are references to ideas like darkness may have an ominous tone, but this is not the thrust of the book (and indeed, of very few photographic instruction books I've encountered). Were Tal to write such a book, I would certainly be interested. It would be satisfying to say that this is a book for anyone who wants to create photographic Art, but that would be unrealistic. Rembrandt had to learn how to mix paints and use brushes before he began creating his masterpieces and the photographer will find it easier to grasp Tal's advice if he is competent with his camera and his software.Note: The publisher provided me with a review copy of this book at no charge.

52 days after Ronald Reagan left office, I took the National Teachers Exam in another state. I aced it. And I took those great scores and taught for a few years. Then I had a baby, and I quit teaching to stay home with her. We moved to Texas, and I decided that I wouldn't take the TExES quite yet. After all, I was going to be a stay-at-home mom for a while. I put the test off and made the decision to take it later. And then I had another baby, and another baby."Take the TExES later on," I kept telling myself. "You can always do it down the road. After all, you don't even know if you'll ever go back to teaching."So I didn't. I focused on my kids and was quite happy living the June Cleaver life.As previously noted, I had taken the NTE in the very early days of the first Bush administration. And as I lived my happy at-home life, time passed. All the way through the Clinton administration and through the next Bush administration and through the first Obama term, I was blissful in my life at home, centered around my family. I piled my kids into the minivan and drove them to music lessons and to ball practice and to driver's ed. This was what I wanted to do. I could teach other people's kids later on; this was the only shot I had with my own.And time passed and babies grew and suddenly it was the spring of 2015 and Mr. Obama was well into his second term.I looked around and realized that my youngest baby was getting ready to enter high school."Oh, my," I said to myself. "That happened quickly. Maybe you should see about taking the TExES."I told myself that was a great idea. I sent everything to the state, and they told me what I needed to do to get my certificates transferred. It was official. Like it or not, I was going to have to take the PPR . . . *26 years* after I had taken the NTE and 22 years after I had quit teaching to stay home!Suddenly, I realized that I was very rusty. How on earth was I going to prepare?A quick online search led me to this book. A few readings of reviews led me to believe that it was the one must-have for adequately preparing for my test. My friends at Amazon made sure I had it as soon as possible, and I sat down to prepare.I took the diagnostic test and was unimpressed with, though not surprised by, my score. After all, it had been more than a quarter of a century, and I was rusty.I read the book and took the first practice test.It was better, but still pretty ugly.I read the book again and took the second practice test.I was relieved to see that my score was much improved.Over the next few weeks, I repeated the entire cycle of diagnostic test, read, practice test 1, read, practice test 2.My scores began to improve by leaps and bounds.Other than the resources at the ETS site, this was my only method of preparation. On the day of the test, I walked into a room filled with test-takers who hadn't even been born yet the last time I took a test. They looked at me in confusion, as if perhaps one of the other youngsters taking the test had brought their overprotective mother along to hold their hand. Shock registered on their faces as I, two days past my 48th birthday, took a seat among them.As I waited for the test to start, I was nervous and bothered by the fact that I was potentially wasting money on a test I wouldn't pass. I was old. I was rusty. I was relying on a book to teach me things that had taken me 4 years to learn when I was young and fresh. This was probably a really bad idea. The test began.I kept waiting for the questions to get hard. They never really did.Out of the 100 questions on the test, I was confident in my answer for 92 of them. After I finished, I went back through all 100 questions again and changed 4 of my answers. I summoned all my courage, pressed 'submit', and went out to my car.On the way home, I began to second-guess myself. It was too easy! Surely I must have misread some things!I spent a nervous Friday-to-Tuesday waiting for my scores. I had been told they would likely be posted between 10:00 and 5:00 on Tuesday.I started checking at 6:15 am.At around 8:00, my husband (who hadn't left for the day yet) said, "Stop doing that! They'll be there when they get there. You aren't going to make them show up any sooner!""I know," I said, as I refreshed the screen again. Finally, at 1:37, the screen switched from saying ' no scores are available' to saying 'click Submit to view your scores'.I held my breath.I pushed the button. The screen took foreeeeeeever to load. When it finally did, I scanned frantically for my score. I thought I had probably passed, but I wasn't positive. My heart was beating out of my chest and I had broken a sweat. All of a sudden, the number 293 leaped out at me.Not only had I passed, but I had even done well!48 years old . . . 26 years out of college . . . 22 years as a stay-at-home mom. Please remember that I had bombed the diagnostic test the first time, and the first practice test was pretty miserable, as well. The information found in the book was useful, and it was excellent preparation for me. Let me say again that it was the only method of preparation that I used.If that doesn't recommend it, I don't know what else will.I leave you, gentle reader, with this -- if you ever move to a new state and they require a different test than the one you took, take that test as soon as soon as you can . . . within the same presidential administration, if possible. In a couple of decades, your old brain will thank you for it.

First, a little bit of background about why I bought the book. I have been seeking certification through an alternative certification program. The particular program I used partners with a test preparation website called certifyteacher.com. After studying through that website for a couple of weeks, I'd gone through all the practice questions they had to offer. Practice tests no longer had value because I already knew all the answers. Because my PPR exam was still about 3 weeks away, I wanted another source of study topics and practice tests to keep me sharp.PROS:The information that is in the study guide portion of the book is quite good. The charts for Piaget's Stages of Cognitive Development, Erikson's Stages of Development, and Bloom's Taxonomy were very helpful. You can take the tests online or using the book and they offer an explanation of each answer.CONS:Although the information that is in it is good, it is in no way comprehensive. A lot of the topics I had studied prior to buying this book were completely absent. If I had only studied using this book, I would've been left clueless for a lot of questions on the exam. But the main problem I have with this book is that, in my opinion, the tests are full of really bad questions that are not indicative of the questions on the actual test. Not all of the questions are bad but many of them are confusing (easily misinterpreted to think it was asking something else), have multiple correct answers where none are clearly the "best" answer, or have an explanation that makes little logical sense. It was incredibly frustrating to take these practice tests. I almost didn't even take the second one (and I kind of wish I hadn't) but I was so annoyed by the test questions.I scored significantly higher on the actual PPR than I did on these practice tests. So on the plus side, if you do OK on these practice tests, you should be fine on the actual exam.Overall, I don't think it's downright awful but I don't think it's particularly good either. The information it contains is good but it doesn't cover everything you need to know and the tests could be a lot better than they are. I think it can be helpful for some but for me, it wasn't worth the $30 I paid for it.

Definitely was a helpful study material for the TExES PPR. There is a lot of material in here (if actually take the time to study it) that was EXTREMELY similar to the actual test. Buying it from Barnes and Noble is way more expensive... Amazon is definitely the place to go.

The material is good, but my complain is , as it states , book +online . When I entered the code . The rea website says this "The code you entered entitles you to purchase the online diagnostic and study materials at a reduced price of $1.99." I tried to purchase it-would not let me. I bought the book just for those two tests. I am disappointed.
