Great story. The mix of aviators and mechanized forces makes for a super adventure. I can not wait to see what the brothers will be doing next. As a side comment my brother in law flew P-47's out of Italy during WWll. I was a plane captain (USN) during Korea with ASW TBM -3s/3w, serving on six CVE carriers. I couldn't put book one and two down, they were so good.

Grasso's second book featuring the Moon brothers pilot/tanker duo is even better than his first. It points out the ugliness, confusion and horror of war; and portrays the hubris of generals, and the sacrifice of the down-rank combatants. It's an excellent read that is hard to put down.

The author was so fixated in the main subject of the book that he just added extra stories to fill the pages so he would have a novel.

Good light reading with the Moon brothers and Silvie. A little far fetched on the remote controlled business but fun. I didn't know about the fortifications mentioned in the book.

Well written, kept you reading and didn't want to put it down. My kind of story!

Mr. Stiles has a very interesting writing style. He did however keep my interest through the entire book. I would read his books again.

Part Holocaust memoir and part U.S. Army career narrative, this tale of an extraordinary life begins with young Schaja Shachnowski, a Lithuanian Jew, watching the Nazis march into his town. Taken with his family to a concentration camp, they survived by bribery, quick wits, the help of the Jewish camp police and the occasional assistance of local Lithuanians. Schaja was impressed by American GIs and remembered them after he and his family were eventually admitted to the U.S.: wanting to marry a Christian girl whom his family loathed and also unable to find a decent job, he enlisted in the army in 1955. Sid Shachnow had an extraordinary life, part of it kind of random,having been born in the wrong place at the wrong time, a young Jewish boy in a Jewish family who ends up going through the hell of the Nazi's entering their town in Lithuania at the beginning of the gradual extermination of millions. To get a quick synopsis of the story, go to his daughter LeeAnne's review on Goodreads:[...]... Here are some of the things that impressed me about his story:1. There were several reasons Sid was able to navigate himself out of the horrible Nazi situation: he had the courage to live, forage for food in guarded gardens, under the floorboards of party member's homes, to make loyal friends along the way, he had a resourceful Uncle who got intel that helped him get out of impending doom just in time and there were people, not always perfect people, who took him in and hid him. He had the kind of personality that wouldn't give up, a positive way about him that people liked and it served him well all throughout his life. He was a friendly gutty guy and somehow was able to keep a positive attitude. These characteristics served him well his whole life.2. He didn't blush about telling the whole story, even a little bit about the sex lives of his parents, that his dad was a bit of a wuss, the way the other prisoners tricked him into compromising situations, that even as a leader, he had reservations about Viet Nam, that when questionable things happened in his career he came up with politically correct answers, that he was lucky in many ways. And although he received many combat awards, many for valor, it never felt like bragging. He did what it took to get through a situation, many times not even knowing or acknowledging that he had been hit, and finished the task. He remained humble and positive at all times.3. Part of the story is of family, family relationships, to some extent, from the perspective of having been born Jewish. There are many philosophical comments about how unfortunate it is that people are raised from the time of childhood to hold bigoted and horrible contempt toward other people. But he's very fair about how this works in reverse, his own parents having held a negative feeling and irritation at Sid's own beautiful and loving positive wife Arlene who happened to be a Catholic. Their treatment of her was heart breaking. Sid was always devoted to his own family and three of the four daughters ended up with military husbands, the fourth married an AOL guy, LOL.4. It was interesting to get a feeling for the way the military works with its promotions, discipline, sometimes heavy drinking, training, etc. Sid was an uneducated guy, didn't even graduate from high school, wasn't yet a citizen of the US when he volunteered for the army and yet he rose to the top. Part of the story is the amazing American story, how a guy with guts and integrity with little background can get to the top. I enjoyed his descriptions of the other men he dealt with in the military. It is also the story of the Special Forces and how that started small and with Sid's help, evolved into the important role that is plays today. Sid's background in the ghettos in Europe gave him part of the special training and language skills he needed to become such a major part of this important development.5. It sometimes reads like historical fiction. Having read so much fiction, I sometimes had to remind myself that this was a true story. I found it fascinating and interesting from the first page. I know Sid and Arlene almost as well as my own parents and I know more about Sid's parent's than my own grandparents.Thanks Sid for having the guts to tell an honest and open story in the true but humble way you told it. It's leaders like you that make this a great place to live. The title of the book is perfect. You are a good good man and I learned a lot. (less)

I was stationed in Berlin under Gen Shachnow, and to be completely honest, I don't think the officer corps understood what he had gone through in his life to be where he was then. I would have very much liked to have listened to Gen Shachnow tell his story over a quiet beer in the officer's club.

His story is compelling and a must-read for anyone who doubts the Holocaust happened. Powerful stuff, not all glitzy and glamorous either. He was a warrior who carved out his own niche on his own terms. He passed just a few months ago after serving his country and enduring the unspeakable conditions of a Lithuanian concentration camp. RIP, sir. You were one of the greats.

Hope and Honor is the true story of the life of Sidney Shachnow, who spent the formative years of his childhood in Lithuanian concentration camp and would years later rise to become a General in the US Army. General Shachnow and his talented co-author Jann Robbins make us feel we are right there every step of the way as we follow his life from the camps to life as a refugee in post war Lithuania and Germany to coming over to American and going through the hard process of assimilating to US culture. The book was an eye opener to me as I never really gave much thought, sad to say, of the struggles immigrants from other cultures must face when they come to America to forge a new life for themselves and their families. Though some of the passages are difficult to digest to the intense brutality and violence (both physical and emotional), Hope and Honor is a compelling read and you'll be all the richer for having read it.

This is the best book I've read recently and I heartily recommend it.The first and most harrowing part of the book deals with General Shachnow's childhood and miraculous survival of the Holocaust. The protagonist of the story is primarily Shachnow's mother -- an extraordinary, quick witted and determined woman. It is mainly due to her efforts and incredible daring that both her children (one of whom was a mere toddler) survived, while pretty much everyone around them perished. Her strength through the war and the heartbreaks and challenges of the family's post war experiences were to me the most touching and heartrending aspect of the book. Shachnow does a fine job at crediting his mother's extraordinary sacrifices and bravery, but also touchingly describing her weaknesses and eventual failures.The second part of the book, which in some ways is just as touching, deals with the Shachnow family's move first to post-war Germany and then to the US. The immigration experience was particularly rough on General Shachnow, who arrived in the US as an unschooled and traumatized teenager, but managed, through toil and faith to complete high school successfully. Shachnow's parents fared less well. They seemed unable to transition to the new culture and its demands. Shachnow speculates that his mother had used up all her strength and ingenuity to survive and therefore found herself unable to cope with the new world. Shachnow tells us how the graceful heroine of the Kovno Ghetto turns into a nagging, selfish and small-minded woman, whose behavior inhibits her and her husband from succeeding in their new life. In one of the saddest parts of the book, Shachnow describes his break from his family following his marriage to a non-Jewish girl -- an event that his family treated with neither wisdom nor grace.The final part of the book is devoted to General Shachnow's military career, starting with his enlistment as a private at the end of his high school studies. His rise to the rank of general is described with humility and is of much interest, though, like other reviewers, I wish it was more extensive.This is an extraordinary book. In part it made me cry (the touching love between the brothers and the terrible heartbreak of Sidney's parents experiences in the US) and in part it made me wonder. But most of all -- the book inspired me. This is the story of the incredible power of love to save lives, to give meaning to existence. It's the story of familial ties and their challenges. This is the story of the ultimate inevitability of success to those who are sufficiently persistent. And finally -- it's the story of true patriotism and leadership. The concepts of system thinking, enterprise architecture, business architecture are big enough by themselves to be covered in a book. Doing it all within the context of a single book is daunting and a topic that Gharajedaghi partially accomplishes.I read this book as part of the research I did for my doctoral dissertation, so this review will have a bit of an academic bent.Gharajedaghi is a strong believer in the Enterprise Architecture models of Zachman and that influence shows in his work. The book has a strong academic flavor in its use of terminology and how it describes systems thinking. Executives and consultants looking to understand these concepts will have to work at it a bit, but the work is worth it.A strength of this work is the fact that includes actual case studies -- something that few people take the time to do. The five cases cover a variety of industries and situations that make the principles that Gharajedaghi discusses.Overall, if you are a serious student of systems thinking this book is a good second level reference. Peter Senge's the 5th Discipline is the 'pop' version of systems thinking and Peter Checklund is the intermediate level and somewhat similar to this work.

I will be brief with my review. Brief because this book forced me to think and introduces new paradigms in my routine. The key learning here is that as Engineers, we should always trade places with our customers and that we should adopt user-centric approaches to systems development.The long narratives in the book could put the shortened attention reader to sleep and intimidate the weak at heart. But, there's a lot of wisdom hidden even in those sections. A second reading should reveal them.His discussion of "Holon" and Multi-minded systems as the foundation for socio-cultural systems was a visionary one, and exposed one reality: That platforms such as Facebook and Twitter were possible even as far back as the 1960's if Engineers had changed their perspectives and embraced multi-mindedness as a design paradigm.This book should be read alongside "The Ghost in the Machine (Arkana) by Arthur Koestler (Jun 5, 1990)".Jovita Nsoh, CISM, CISSP, CITA-PSenior Security ArchitectMicrosoftSeattle, WA

I'm relatively new to these concepts, and this book is challenging and exciting to me. For someone who hasn't spent much time considering these concepts, it will seem pretty revolutionary. I can't really compare it to any other literature on the topic, but I felt that it was a dense, high-level introduction to the topic, and I will likely read through it again and again (because I'm sure I'll discover more each time). This book is well written with easy-to-digest vocabulary, but the concepts are complex and should really make you think. Love it.

I have just reread Mr. Gharajedaghi's book. It is a very thoughtful and engaging review of systems thinking placed in the context of other world views in Modern Times. It is occasionally and with good humor spiced with thoughts from Persia, as well as from the author's direct experience with Russell Ackoff. It ties together thoughts on Business Process Management with larger views on gathering consensus, resolving conflict, engaging in beauty, and managing for profit. It is an ambitious undertaking and succeeds with great integrity.

The least this book can do is to change your thinking paradigm. It's so full of wisdom and insight that it takes a while to absorb the essence of it. There are a few books on Systems Thinking out there, but this book is unique it its 30,000 feet view of the discipline. It combines system dynamics and systems design so beautifully that you can't distinguish between them. In my opinion, it's a must read for senior leaders, consultants and change agents all across the world.

The reason I bought this book is purely out curiousity on the subject. I got this one along with the one by Ludwig Van. One sentence in this book has had a profound impact on how I do what I do. I will state it below."... the customer is right, always right. If you don't believe this, you will not work here. He is right even if you don't know why. Your job is to find this rationale and learn why he is doing what he is doing." - An old IBM saying... .This is explained with a great example to support it, in a manner in which one could directly apply it to their work. About the Author

GLENN FREDERICK KNOLL is Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. Following his undergraduate education at Case Institute of Technology, he earned a Master's degree from Stanford University and a doctorate in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Michigan. During his graduate work, he held national fellowships from the Atomic Energy Commission and the National Science Foundation.He joined the Michigan faculty in 1962, and served as Chairman of the Department of Nuclear Engineering from 1979 to 1990 and as Interim Dean of the College of Engineering from 1995-96. He held appointments as Visiting Scientist at the Nuclear Research Center in Karlsruhe, Germany and as Senior Fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of Surrey, U.K. His research interest have centered on radiation measurements, nuclear instrumentation, and radiation imaging. He is author or co-author of over 140 technical publications, 8 patents, and 2 textbooks.He has been elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the American Nuclear Society, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has been selected to receive three national awards given annually to a single recipient for achievements in engineering and education: the 1979 Glenn Murphy Award from the American Society for Engineering Education, the 1991 Arthur Holly Compton Award of the American Nuclear Society, and the 1996 Merit Award of the IEEE/Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society. He is one of five receiving editors of Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Part A, and a past or present member of the Editorial Boards for Nuclear Science and Engineering, IEEE Transaction on Medical Imaging, and Physica Medica. In 1999, he was elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering. He has served as consultant to 25 industrial and government organizations in technical areas related to radiation measurements, and is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan.

When I told my dad I was going to grad school for nuclear engineering, he gifted me his first edition copy of Knoll from the 70s/80s. I had to order the 4th edition due to several updates, and they both sit happily next to each other on my shelf.As other reviewers said, this book is indispensable. I spend more time with it than I do with my boyfriend. If you're in physics, health physics, or nuclear engineering and contemplating renting this or borrowing from a friend, strongly consider just buying your own copy, you'll come back to it for reference time and time again.

This is a great book. It is simple enough for the layman or hobbyist yet it is packed with concise information. It is helpful for lifting the fog of SI units and classical units that cloud the understanding of nuclear physics. I have not finished the book. I read and re-read the first three chapters, each time gaining new information. This is not liberal arts this is real science. You just have to repeat and re-read. What I have read has made the price worthwhile. As I advance more with scintillators and gamma spectroscopy the remaining chapters look to be very helpful.

Excellent book for a first course in radiation detection/instrumentation, or for self study to gain a greater appreciation for the field in general. Some of the chapters are a bit dense to read, but the book also doubles as a reference manual for later use. You'll find a thorough list of references at the end of each chapter with specific citations made throughout the text. This makes it easy to drill-down into specific topics of interest as you're working toward application of a particular detection method.

This is called the radiation detection bible among my lab group. It covers all the main points of radiation detection at a college level. A great reference for anything an undergraduate in nuclear physics or nuclear engineering needs to know. It is written at a level simple enough for any science fan to understand but with a depth that meets the standards for professionals. Each chapter includes citations for those that want to find the information in more detail from its source. Great book, I would recommend it to anyone interested in radiation detection!

I was unaware this was an international print edition. What does that mean exactly... new in plastic comes complete with torn pages, skewed printing, blurry and inconsistent darkness of both text and images. Essentially it is a poorly printed, poorly bound, poor quality paper (phone book quality). While not the most expensive book in my library, for $100 it would have been nice to know it was an international edition so I could source it elsewhere for less.

The book is thorough. Need to have a basic understanding of physics and radiation before diving into it, however, as they don't spend a lot of time on the background information. I suggest ordering the solution manual as well...the questions at the ends of the chapters are deep and solutions are not readily available online.

My teacher said something about this being the best reference for detector stuff; he's the radiation protection officer or whatever they call that at my school. Anyway, if you need it for a class, I'd advise just buying it - it's got a lot of info that you almost definitely will find useful for later classes.

Not the most in-depth textbook for advanced, modern topics in radiation detection, but this book exhaustively covers everything that the average nuclear engineer needs to know about radiation detection. The book is also written in a way which is rather easy to understand and highlights differences between different systems very well.
