I first heard Ms. Gallagher interviewed on NPR and found her to be interesting and articulate.The book is just as wonderful! Informative, interesting and beautifully written. I urge anyone who is thinking of buying a house to read this book FIRST - then start looking at the real thing. Ms. G. provides us with a mini architectural degree and a phd. (small case) in the phsychological aspects of our most important space - our homes. Thank you for a great book. I have bought several copies for friends and family about to embark on this important mission and they have all been delighted to be exposed to Ms. Gallagher's knowledge and insight.

I have decorating books replete with full-color illustrations of ideas, and I have New Age-y decorating books that explain Feng Shui and how to use essential oils, but this book is a really nice bridge between the visualizing your space and analyzing the psychology behind how you use it. It's strategic vs. tactical, but since there are so few books for laymen that tackle the former, it's a welcome addition and brings interesting insights as to how to think about our homes and make them more liveable.

I chose this rating because of the quality of the books,the price, and the speed at which it arrived. I purchased multiple books for my clients and staff and felt good about handing them out.Great quality

Fascinating look at how architecture and interior design influence our mood and behavior. You gain general priciples and insights into what makes an space inviting or unappealing. This is a great book for an architect or interior designer with an interest in environmental psychology. This is NOT a "how to" book for consumers who want remodeling ideas.

I always thought that we are all psychologically affected by the space we live in, and this book expands on that theme. This is a great book for anyone who seriously thinks about their homes beyond mere decorating. I wish I had written it.

House Thinking focuses on each room and its function, historically and personally. One example is how a "Great Room" came about and how people in the past used such a space and how your own family activities and needs might fit with one. Gives a different and useful perspective on home space, room by room.

I don't actually hate this book, which is what giving a book 1 star means, however, I do think it is awful because it is so poorly written. Did this book have an editor assigned to it? In the first 15 pages, which is as long as I stayed with this book, there is an abundance of incomplete sentences, syntax errors, and random, seemingly unrelated ideas jumbled together. Several times I picked the book up and tried to read it only to put it down because a lot of it was nearly incomprehensible to me. In the Praise section in the front of the book I was surprised to see this book was recommended by the Chicago Tribune, New York Times Book Review and Sarah Susanka, author of The Not So Big House, which is a highly readable, well written book and one that I highly recommend. Did these people really read House Thinking? I'm going to ask for my money back.

Come to Tanzania!! Get lost....Well not with this map. Not only is it clear, but it also shows the major roads and even some of the dirt roads in the area. I'm a fan. We all need maps and this one really works. It is road map, so expect that is its job.I LOVE maps because when you are out of range with your cell phone (lots of the time in Tz) the map is right there in your car ready for you. And it is not expensive and it doesn't use up your data and it doesn't depend what region you are in.

I've spent a lot of time in Tanzania and decided to order this map as further and, hopefully, more up to date detail. If you are going to spend any time off of the main roads, this map is essentially useless. Other than towns and villages on main roads, and some general locations for camps and lodges, this map misses the mark. As far as I can tell, a great many towns and villages of some size and importance, but slightly off the "beaten path," are completely omitted, making it just another pretty, but very general map for non-detailed reference. I have had, and seen, much better. Very disappointed.

Map has half of the country on one side, half on the other. I was hoping for all on one side to hang on our wall to study prior to our trip. Otherwise, high quality paper, good detail.

Looks pretty but lacks precise detail and accuracy. Example: Lake Ndutu on the southern border of the Serengeti is identified as Lake Lgana. There is no Lake Legana in Tanzania. Many other similar errors.

It's easy to get through if you don't worry too much about visualizing the moves exactly. Get a general idea of what he's describing, and what each move does, and remind yourself that you'll be able to see them in action when you watch video instruction.Just having that basic understanding of what was possible, of what the various slights could produce, keep me interested. I mean, I know how Three Card Monte works now, and why it's so tough to beat!If you want to learn card magic, at some point, you will need to study Erdnase.

This edition contains the classic, original text, improved with larger pictures, while maintaining the first edition's pagebreaks. Add to this a comprehensive index, and what's not to love? An indispensable reference for any card worker, and as valuable today as ever!

My 14 year-old grandson is fascinated by slight of hand and card tricks. He's gotten quite good at it, but I thought this book might help him get even better. He devoured the book after receiving it for Christmas and his skills have already really improved.

What can you say about this book that hasn't been said 100 times before? In just 130 short pages (under half of which are specifically devoted to magic), S. W. Erdnase redefined card magic. I am very much an amateur, but am familiar enough to recognize nearly everything in the book, including some entire routines (Ricky Jay, for instance, does a version of "The Exclusive Coterie" in which he recites the pages-long patter from this book word for word). Further starting to practice some of the many moves presented in the book has revealed their beauty and potential.The book is divided into two sections, "Card table artifice", dealing with cheating at draw poker (false shuffles, false cuts, bottom dealing, palming, etc.) , and "Legerdemain", dealing with card magic. The entire book is written in a very engaging and amusing style, and although describing complex hand movements in words is notoriously difficult, it is fairly easy to follow the instructions for the various moves described, with the aid of the provided drawings. And the moves are many. A performer could easily make a career strictly by mastering the slights contained in this gem.It is hard to pick favorites from everything described in this book, but I wanted to try. The "Mexican Three Card Monte" move is one of my favorites, because it is so simple (you can master it in about 5 minutes), yet looks so smooth and is very hard to detect. Probably overall, my favorite move I have ever seen is described in this book -- the "Diagonal Palm-Shift". It is hard to put into words how elegant this move is; when I first saw a video clip of Dai Vernon performing it, I rewatched the same 5 seconds about 20 times in a row, because it is so amazing and unbelievable to see.Anyway, this book is a classic, and remains useful today, more than 100 years after its publication. It is great. Really great.

Beautiful book, but extremely hard for me to master. I have small hands and I am a bit clumsy, but it gives me something to shoot for and to try to master anyway.

This is it. There is a reason it has been in print since 1902. Yes, it does talk about cheating at cards but the same moves are the basic staples of card magic. Don't think this is an introductory textbook though. It's graduate level work. (For an intro level book for a good price, go get Royal Road to Card Magic by Hugard and Braue.) Pay close attention to every single word, and study the somewhat difficult to understand drawings.Take a few years to digest and practice. And, if you are serious, go find yourself a good teacher.

The Expert at the Card Table - Classic Treatise on Card Manipulation by S.W. Erdnase - has been hailed at the Bible for Close-up Card Magicians and Gamblers alike. For the longest time I was strictly using The Royal Road to Card Magic DVD Set taught by R. Paul Wilson, along with the book Expert Card Technique. Both of those were great learning tools, but I was very exciting when I purchased a Hardcover copy of Expert at the Card Table for a reasonable price. The book has a nice medium, dark wooden color to it with just regular black letters for the title of the book. My copy has a scratch down the back, but it isn't noticeable while looking at it, only when you run your hand down the back of the book.Now even though a majority of these sleights and some effects are out-dated, but if it were not for these specific sleights and card routines, then we wouldn't have nearly as many creative Magicians who really pour their heart and soul into their work. Which is the exact same feeling that I get whenever I am reading Expert at the Card Table, and there have been a few occasions when the author refers to himself as "we" so it could very well be more than just one person writing such a revolutionary book on cards. So I highly suggest any Magicians, Gambler or just the curious to pick up a copy because you're bound to find a sleight/trick/etc that will fit your own personal routine, perfectly.

The book's illustrations are a bit dated, but for what the book is, it's fine.

I was disappointed that the format of the book was so small. I neglected to read the description and thought it was a regular-sized paperback book versus booklet. Keep that in mind if you purchase it. I think too that the information in this publication applies to just about any motorcycle that you are considering for purchase, which is actually a plus. Some good, probably common sense, tips on what to look for when looking at a used bike. For me it did give me a tidbit of info specific to the Triumphs so it was a good purchase. I did notice that the TT600 Triumph was not mentioned..I don't know why not. Overall it's a good booklet, albeit bit over-priced (I think) for what it is. On a scale from 0 to 5 I'd give it a 3.

I bought and read this small "booklet" then tossed it. Weak, weak, weak.Should you be interested in buying a used Triumph Tres or Quatro, take along a knowledgeable Triumph buddy for the pre-buy inspection. I'd be willing to bet your friend will have more knowledge than the material presented in this so-called "Complete Guide". Use the money saved by not buying this book to spring for his lunch.

Great book for anyone starting out on the flying trapeze. Obviously, you won't learn to fly from a book but it's a good way to learn the mechanics and get some tips for conditioning and form.

I like the fact that it was written for people of all abilities. I am a beginner and found the most useful.

This is the most comprehensive book about the flying trapeze I've ever read. I highly recommend it.

It is great to see a new book from Alastair. As anyone who has met him will know, Alastair is a true flying trapeze guru; he owns his own trapeze rig, runs the definitive flying trapeze website and has produced the 'bible' of flying trapeze tricks (Fundamentals of flying trapeze). In this book he goes further, bringing the wealth of his knowledge as a flyer, catcher and instructor to the public, spilling the beans on how to do those tricks that he and the professionals make look so effortless and beautiful. He outlines a logical trick progression and starts the journey from your very first nervous visit to a flying class, through learning your first position catches, all the way to performing in a show! The enthusiasm is both obvious and infectious.He (and his co author Tim) advise you how to prepare mentally and physically, with sections on what to wear, what to take with you and even how to behave at classes. He then presents a progression of trick skills that you can follow as your prowess improves, at each step explaining the challenges to overcome and what mistakes are common and offers training tips and exercises (on the ground, in the air and on related equipment) Importantly he doesn't just say how to do it, he says why it should be done!The book is full of clear diagrams, and it is easy to imagine the 'models' used in the pictures becoming your friends and the words in the book becoming a second opinion to your own instructor. I ordered this book TWICE and both times it was misprinted (blank sections, missing Hebrew), and shoddily printed (it looks like POD -- should say so). I returned it with sadness!

Good read but useless as a siddur

on the major Shabbat home prayers, especially the Kiddushes and Havdalah. The commentaries are from a variety of perspectives, both ideological (Reform, Orthodox, and Conservative) and subject matter (Tanach, feminist, halachic, theological, historical, etc.). I found the halachic commentary to be the most interesting, since it is of the most practical value for anyone seeking to observe Shabbat.One thing I would have changed: the 30 pages spent on Shabbat table songs. Because different families use such a wide variety of songs, any attempt to focus on three or four of them is likely to miss a lot of songs used by lots of people, and to use a lot of songs that lots of people have never heard of. I would have preferred to see the extra space spent on Birkat Hamazon (the blessing after meals) since that prayer is almost universally said after Shabbat meals.
