Who Was Cesar Chavez?     The old theater in Fresno, California, was buzzing with people. A crowd of farmworkers and their families had gathered there for the first meeting of the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA). Cesar Chavez stood on the stage. He was shy, and not a strong public speaker. But his warm smile and friendly manner drew people in to listen. He had started this union—a group organized to protect workers’ rights—to help thousands of farmworkers, including many Mexican Americans, who lived in poverty and were treated unfairly in their jobs.   This day, September 30, 1962, marked the beginning of more than just the farmworkers’ union. It was the start of a movement—a group of people working together to share an idea and bring about change. Cesar had once worked in the fields himself. He had watched his own family, and many others, suffer to earn enough money to survive. He had a vision for a brighter future for all farmworkers.   Many things were decided at the NFWA’s first large meeting. Officers were elected and future plans were discussed. Union members unveiled their flag—a black eagle in a white circle on a red background. The colors had meaning: black for the hard life of the workers, red for the sacrifices they needed to make, and white for hope.   At the meeting, they also agreed on their motto: Viva La Causa! (say: VEE-va la COW-sa) Long Live the Cause!   Cesar had worked hard to get the union started, and there was still a long battle ahead. But he was a determined man. He believed in hard work. He believed in sacrificing time and money to help others. He believed in protesting peacefully instead of using violence.   Cesar led a movement that brought major changes to the lives of farmworkers. He also changed the way Mexican Americans were viewed in America. With Cesar’s guidance, they came together. They demanded attention. America could no longer ignore them.     Chapter 1: The Arizona Ranch     Cesario Estrada Chavez was born on March 31, 1927. His family lived outside the town of Yuma in the Arizona desert. Mama Tella and Papa Chayo, Cesar’s grandparents, had come to the United States from Mexico. They had settled near Yuma in the late eighteen hundreds, bought land, and started a ranch. Papa Chayo died before Cesar was born, but his grandmother still lived in the main adobe house. Cesar, his parents, Librado and Juana, and his brothers and sisters, lived on the ranch, too.   Cesar was the second of six children—older sister, Rita, and younger siblings Richard, Helena, Vicky, and Lenny. Sadly, Helena died when she was just a baby. At first, the family lived in a room off the main house. They owned only a few pieces of furniture. They had no electricity or running water. When their roof started leaking, the family moved into a cottage on the large ranch.   Cesar and his brother Richard spent their time exploring, hiking, and playing outdoors together. They swam in the canal that brought water to the alfalfa, watermelon, grass, and cotton crops that grew in the fields. They liked to ride horses and climb trees. The family gathered for barbecues on summer nights with Cesar’s aunts, uncles, and many cousins who lived nearby.   But the boys had work to do, too. Cesar’s father taught them how to chop wood, work with the horses, weed the crops, and know when the watermelons were ripe. Librado was strict, but patient, as he shared important farming skills with his sons.   Cesar’s mother, Juana, wanted her children to grow up to be good people. She taught them to share with others without expecting anything in return. And, even though many Mexican boys were raised to be tough, she did not believe in fighting or violence. Cesar remembered one of her sayings throughout his life: “It takes two to fight, and one can’t do it alone.” In other words, even if someone wants to fight you, you have the choice to walk away.   The Chavez family was Catholic, but there wasn’t a church close by. So Juana and Mama Tella taught the children their religion at home. They gathered around their grandmother’s bed at night to hear stories of the saints. The stories of these holy people who had lived very good lives made an impression on young Cesar.   Beginning in 1929, many American banks and businesses went out of business. Millions of people lost their jobs and lived in poverty. This was known as the Great Depression. During the Depression, it was very difficult to find work. The Chavez family didn’t suffer as much as many others, however. Their hard work on the ranch provided them with food—fruit and vegetable crops, fish from the canal, eggs and meat from the chickens, and milk and cheese from the cows.  Juana, with her generous heart, even invited less fortunate people over for meals.   When Cesar was six, he was old enough to attend school. But when he arrived at the schoolhouse, the teacher wouldn’t let Cesar sit next to his sister, Rita. She asked him to sit with the other children in first grade. He cried and insisted that he have a seat next to Rita. The teacher finally gave in. After a few days, Cesar felt ready to sit with his other first-grade classmates.   But Cesar never really liked school. He would have much rather been outside on the ranch where he wasn’t forced to wear shoes! At school, he also discovered how unkind some white people acted toward Mexican Americans. Cesar’s classmates made fun of his brown skin and called him “dirty.” They tried to start fights with him. Cesar always spoke Spanish at home with his family. But his teacher hit him on the knuckles with a ruler if she heard him speaking Spanish in the classroom.   At the time, more than 1.5 million Mexicans lived in the United States. Many had come in the early nineteen hundreds, looking for work—and there had been plenty of jobs. But during the Depression, jobs were scarce, and many white people blamed Mexicans. Some were deported, or sent back, to Mexico—even if they were American citizens! Those who stayed faced racism in their communities.   Even though the Chavez family was luckier than many during the Depression, by 1933 the ranch itself was in trouble. Arizona suffered from a drought. It had not rained for a long time. The canal was dry and the earth in the fields was cracked. No crops would grow. The family could not pay its bills.   Hundreds of thousands of other Americans who had lost their jobs headed to California to find work. California was suffering from the Great Depression, too. But there was no drought in California. And because the state has some of the richest farmland in the world, workers were needed to pick crops, which included tomatoes, lettuce, grapes, avocados, strawberries, peas, cherries, and corn. So in 1938, Cesar’s father headed west to California. He hoped to earn enough money to support his family and save the ranch.

What a hero to all the migrant workers. Chavez fought for their dignity as laborers and when the dust had settled, he accomplished more for thousands of California laborers.

Hey, brothers Manning! Get a new editor! Please! I think this is mentioned in the other books in this series, so why are there still errors, words left out, and other typing mistakes?I really like the characters and the action in the John (Superman?) Stone thrillers. I say Superman because he is always getting beat up and/or shot and it never seems to bother him. Oh, and while it’s happening, he’s killing more bad guys than a whole army would. This is definitely fiction and maybe fantasy. But, John has a big heart. He is a rescuer and cannot resist someone in need.Book 6, “Danger Close” doesn’t appeal to me as much as the other books in the series did. The plot doesn’t take long to explain, because it’s kind of thin. Just know there is lots and lots of violence, justified, but......

Awesome action packed adventure for John Stone as this series continues to be a must read. Only thing better would be an appearance by Chance Hunter!

So much action in this book The Manning brothers have done it again written an absolutely terrific book and the John Stone character is one of my favorites. I highly recommend this book for everyone who loves action and suspense.

I spent an evening reading your story and I enjoyed it very. Much. Please keep up the good. Work it is liked every much

It was an incredibly quick read and very enjoyable. Great storytelling. I am looking forward to what happens next with John Stone.

I have really enjoyed the series.

My husband is a public school teacher. Every few years the district adopts some new "program" that is supposed to boost student learning and improve test scores. What my husband has seen over the years is a constant dumbing down of the curriculum - and no better student performance. In fact, performamce is sliding. Why?Do kids need more hours at school? Year-round school? Better technology? Earlier introduction to reading? This author answers all of these questions and more with the most up-to-date research and a resounding NO. Who succeeds in school and goes on to live a productive adult life? Kids with grit, curiosity, determination, whose earliest years were a time of safety and attachment to mom. You'd think this was some fundamentalist Christian book but it is not. This is a secular book about secular schools and research by secular social scientists. The author does not create a "how to" for helping failing kids and failing schools. He simply discusses what works and what does not.Eye-opening, important book. I would highly recommend this book to school district officials, school board members, teachers, administrators, and most of all PARENTS.

Paul Toughs book starts out with a few great chapters challenging the conventional thoughts of why children in poverty do not complete their education. The basic premise student intelligence or teacher quality is not near as important as performance character traits, such as grit, executive function, self-control, optimism. These are traits that are easily formed in children growing up in stress free environments with plenty of parent attention and affection, but are missing is children growing up in poverty with disjointed families, drug abuse, and other forms of chronic stress. But after these first few chapters, the book really falters. Its like the book is a collection of essays or articles on school reform, which are then tacked together loosely with this idea of character helping children succeed. And while each chapter is well researched and referenced, the cumulative result is a lot of contradictory data, and no response to the question you wish this book would answer: How do children succeed? What do I mean by contradictory data? Well, despite the premise that teacher quality does not matter much, the book spends a lot of time praising innovative teachers or teaching programs. Despite giving research to show that ACT/SAT scores are not a good indicator of college graduation, he examines how some schools have been successful in getting their povery students into colleges by cramming them for the ACT tests. And despite showing how learning chess can teach character skills like patience, determination, etc, the book also demonstrates that skills on the chess board do not necessarily translate to skills in the classroom or in the real world. Near the end of the book, Tough even admits that all of the studies that have identified what matters most in raising test scores and graduation rates of children living in poverty is misleading, because in reality the majority of improvements found by these innovative teaching methods are found in children that are poor enough to qualify for school meal plans, but not technically living below the poverty line.Perhaps the most upsetting point of the book was near the end when Tough (who grew up middle to upper middle class) tries to relate to the poverty students by describing the time he dropped out of Columbia his freshman year and using his tuition money to take a Kerouac-esque bicycle trip. Tough uses this story to describe how this trip helped him take risks and build character traits that were not formed in school, and how this helped him succeed. I am uncomfortable with comparing a person with the financial means and support to voluntarily quit school, knowing his family is there as a safety net, to go play hooky, and a person living in poverty subjected to various external stresses, but is able to have the self control to focus and better themselves. In the end, the hypothesis Tough proposed early in this book is contradicted by his later chapters, and the question of how all children can succeed is never answered. Implementation of the subject matter is this book is absent besides hugging your children.

Following the footsteps of Jonathan Kozol, Paul Tough employs his significant storytelling abilities to help readers see and feel the plight of children, families and communities trapped in cycles of failure and poverty. How Children Succeed challenges some conventional wisdom on causes of failure (poverty, teacher quality) and contends that nurturing character in children and young adults is the key to success. As a former NYC Teaching Fellow who has lived and worked in multiple communities of cyclical poverty, I'm convinced that Tough has nailed some critical pieces of breaking those cycles. Here is the argument in brief:==============================There exists in our society a troubling and growing achievement gap between the have and the have-nots. The cause of that gap is neither merely poverty nor IQ, but a specific set of non-cognitive skills including executive function and conscientiousness, which Tough calls "character." Children who acquire these skills can break historic cyclical patterns of failure.Malleability of Character and Intelligence==========================================Whereas IQ is hardly malleable, executive function and character strengths - specifically grit, self-control, zest, social intelligence, gratitude, optimism, curiosity and conscientiousness - are far more malleable. These skills are better predictors of academic performance and educational achievement than IQ and therefore ought to be the direct target of interventions.Attachment and Lifelong Health==============================Tough sees two key areas of influence for those who care for those trapped in cycles of poverty. The first is secure early attachment to parents. "The effect of good parenting is not just emotional or psychological, the neuroscientists say; it is biochemical" (28). Specifically, children who experience high levels of stress but NOT responsive and nurturing parents suffer from a range of lifelong health and mental health issues. However, "When mothers scored high on measures of responsiveness, the impact of those environmental factors on their children seemed to almost disappear" (32). Tough cites one study in which "early parental care predicted which students would graduate even more reliably than IQ or achievement test scores" (36). Importantly, interventions that focus on promoting stronger parent-child relationships in high risk groups (including one in which just 1 of 137 infants studied demonstrated secure attachment at the outset) have shown promising impact. Of the 137 children in the study, 61% of those in the treatment group formed secure attachment by age 2, compared with only 2% of the control group.Adolescent Character Formation==============================Paul Tough highlights the work of school and support programs that intentionally focus on forming the character strength habits that enable children to learn well in schools, form healthy relationships, and avoid the destructive decisions and behavior patterns modeled in their communities. Here, too, Tough sees a ray of hope. Just as early intervention with parents and young children yields wide ranging benefits for families in poverty, so character interventions in adolescence can and do enable young adults surrounded by cycles of poverty to learn self-control, perseverance and focus that are critical for escaping the gravitational pull of their communities. Why You Should Read This Book=============================Paul Tough is tackling one of the most challenging - and contentious - issues of our time. His analysis will offend those who tend to blame poverty predominantly on the irresponsible choices of the poor by showing just how powerful the cyclical, environmental pressures are on children raised in these communities. His work is just as challenging to those who think that those trapped in cycles of poverty are mere victims of their environment who bear no responsibility for their decisions. Tough shows compellingly that parents and children in poverty can and do overcome the powerful environmental forces of their communities - and that this is a beautiful and essential component of breaking cyclical poverty. His call is for those with education and influence - the kinds of people who read books like his - to demonstrate motivation and volition (two components of character formation he extols) to recognize, celebrate, and nurture the character of children and families in poverty.Graham ScharfAuthor, The Apprenticeship of Being Human: Why Early Childhood Parenting Matters to Everyone[...]

I have read all of JoAnneh Nagler's books: The Debt Free Spending Plan, How To Be An Artist Without Losing Your Mind, Your Shirt and Your Creative Compass and now Naked Marriage. Nagler's books are simply...practical and inspired. I have recommended the first two countless times and Naked Marriage will round out my list of recommendations. Like Nagler's other two books, this book is an insightful and healthy roadmap. It's about being into the solution, which I find to be the biggest turn on. That's how I feel after reading her books. This is a great read for anyone in a committed relationship.

Great product, informative

Terrific, right on point, easy to apply and really honest and human! I thought this book was the best of the lot!!

In Naked Marriage: How to Have a Lifetime of Love, Sex, Joy, and Happiness, JoAnneh Nagler offers a few simple guidelines to preserve unity and intimacy in marriage. The keystone of marriage is, or can be, the Naked Date. Nagler proposes that couples choose and hour or two each week to get naked with each other. Be consistent, shut out any interruptions, and take time to connect. "We know that being close, touching, making love, having a good romp--and doing it regularly--is good for our marriage."Nagler nails a fundamental, essential element to a healthy marriage: regular, focused time spent together. Despite the nakedness, sex is only one part of this time. As she says, "being 'naked' is about being transparent and honest and available to each other." This practice of openness and intimacy is crucial to an ongoing relationship. As someone who has been married for a quarter of a century, I can affirm what she says. I welcome the challenge not to take a stable marriage for granted. In the time we have been married, there have been periods of regular alone time and periods in which those times are hard to come by. But it needs to be a priority. While Nagler's words are encouraging, she does seem to take a long time to make her point and develop it. The basic ideas--get naked together, be affectionate to one another, communicate openly about money--can be grasped quickly and could be communicated more succinctly. But the book would be too short then. . . . Nevertheless, those basic ideas can be transformative in a marriage and, if her models are followed, can strengthen and sustain a marriage. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

I really enjoyed this book Naked Marriage. I found it full of great advice and easy step by step tips to a healthy and happy intimate relationship with your loved one. I liked the honesty and heart felt moments in this book by Autor Joanneh Nagler. I highly recommend this book.

I found this book to be honest, practical and loving all at the same time. I love the author's approach to nurturing relationships, and I learned a lot about myself and my partner. if you want to have a healthier relationship, I highly recommend it.

Joanneh Nagler's book gives a nice new and fresh look on how to keep your marriage going. She combines a nice sense of humor with great practical ideas to approach your marriage. It's very readable. Give it a shot

The author beautifully illustrates what it means to keep a healthy marriage. Anyone in or contemplating a long term relationship would benefit from these pages! This book is simply perfect!
