This book of spells is as good as any out there on the market. In fact, it is better than most for several reasons.First, it is inclusive. For example, there's actually a spell to help a disabled child reach their fullest potential. Really, nothing has been forgotten in this book. Love, money, careers, health and healing, travel, fertility, protection, justice, peace... you name it, the topic is covered!Second, it advocates for a healthy lifestyle. Unlike spells of old (mix this with a little wine and drink) this book actually acknowledges that there are individuals that suffer from illnesses like alcoholism and provides a spell to aid in such healing. In fact, I cannot find a single spell that advocates practicing anything that could cause potential harm in any way, shape or form.Third, most of the supplies needed to work each spell are everyday household items. One that quickly jumped out at me was "Bubble Wishes for Urgent Needs." All it required was some bubbles and edible seeds. With kids who are bubble crazy and trail mix for every day snacks, the spell was a cinch to create (not to mention effective). Now for the BUT...With all the good I have to write about this book, I still can't give it five stars. Unfortunately, the author never once (from what I've read) shared the importance of opening or closing a circle before casting. For regular practitioners, this is nothing new and easy to overlook in a book since we've already established our routines. However, this can be counterproductive (and even potentially dangerous) for those who are new to the craft. If there are ever additional editions of this book, I would highly suggest that the author include a general knowledge chapter in the beginning of the book before providing the spells. Otherwise, I did enjoy reading this book and will surely use it as reference in future rituals.

This book had great reviews so I just got it but I was more, meh. I like that it has a great variety of spells for all sorts of things but it does not go into enough detail for me. It is set up by what you will need, timing, and the spell. The timing is very general for example it might just say Friday or before bed or whenever the issue arises. Some spells don't tell you for how long they should be done. No info on proper disposal of left over spell materials once completed. One spell calls for a couple of items then doesn't even say how to use the items in the spell! I haven't read through them all yet. However, if you are new to the craft they are simple and basic to get you started. I actually used a few of them as a base to create my own spells which was actually quite helpful. I give it 3 stars for these reasons.

This has spells for anything and everything! I love this book! Don't waist your time on collecting spells through 40 other books when you can have them all in one book!

OMGoddess! I received my book and I can't put it down as there are so many spells for the modern Alchemist to enjoy. Wow, I'll be very busy planting good seeds this Springtime. Prompt delivery and all as a Prime Member. I'm so loving it!!

I feel as though many of the spells are just "fluff" & kind of silly. With that said there is some decent stuff in here to use to build your own spells. The author does not discuss opening & closing your circle or other ritual traditions, it's like a straight up cookbook that doesn't tell you how an oven works or the chemistry behind the bread you bake, which is fine if you know what you are doing. Overall I'm glad I added it to my library & it's got some interesting spells to expand upon.

I absolutely love this book. It is very thick and contains spells for basically all aspects of life. The spells are simple and doesn't require you to buy 18 different herbs or other clutter. It is clear and concise of what needs to be done. I recommend this to all. It is the best spell book I have, It is powerful and worth it!

I love this book and use it often! Love the gorgeous hardcover; no damage to pages or binding! Font is easy to read and intro pages for each chapter have nice illustrations. I do wish they'd include a list of everything you'd need in one section (what crystals, candles, oils, etc) but other than that, it's great. Would recommend!

Among the best of it's type.

Great read for any football fan - an amazing inside look at the unsung heroes of the game. The book is a mix of Howard Mudd's career memories mixed in with interviews from some of the best in the game - past and present (Nick Hardwick, Jackie Slater). The book is a mix of technical football insights and player stories. Very enjoyable. It will remind all of us who play fantasy football who we really have to thank for those high scoring quarterbacks and runningbacks. I have always heard from people who really know the game that offensive linemen are the smartest in the game - and this book outlines why this is true. Enjoy!

A very fun read. I was expecting a bit more technical information on offensive line play, but the book was nonetheless a very enjoyable and informative read. The way the author has set up the book, it reads like you are in a room with a bunch of former and current offensive linemen having a discussion that is guided through a wide range of offensive line topics from making the team through to trying to block Bruce Smith. It was really cool to read the thoughts of greats like Randy Cross and Mike Munchak; current stars like Joe Staley and Evan Mathis, and recent standouts like Jeff Saturday. While I think this books mostly would appeal to the more nerdy football fans, I think even casual fans would appreciate it because there are a vast number of funny stories and interesting anecdotes that counterbalance the technical offensive line jargon.

Wow, this book was more than I bargained for, insightful, instructive, and seriously freaking funny. As the just slightly more than casual football fan I found this read fascinating and engrossing. I've never played the game (apart from flag football in college) but this book allowed me to gain a new perspective and understanding on what the offensive line actually does. Not to mention the hilarious stories! I have my own ebook copy, but just gifted two to my Dad and Brother as an early Christmas present! I can't recommend enough!

It's an okay book.If you are looking for stories from former lineman and coaches about offensive line play this is the book for you. It really consists of rough chapters filled with excerpts of stories from former lineman and coaches about experiences they've had and how things have changed over the years. The book also contains a little information on how the line functions, what each position does, why they do things, how they game plan...but again this is less than 20 percent of the book.

I enjoy watching football, but don't really know too much about it. So I learned a lot reading this book, but what I most enjoyed was the stories of the players themselves. What interesting people! The book is well written, telling of the career of Howard Mudd along while weaving in other important o-line players who he played with or coached; and theircontributions to the game. Even if you are just a casual fan you will enjoy this book. A serious fan will love it.

The book was very interesting as it was written from various viewpoints of former NFL Offensive linemen. I did, however, order the book in hopes that Howard Mudd would include more of his teaching techniques in areas such as, trapping, zone blocking both the even and odd fronts, initial steps, the fit into the defender,,finishing the block and blocking at the second level. It was still a good read.

This book probably isn't for everyone. But if you are into the nuts and bolts of how football is played its tremendous. First hand accounts, X and Os. Good stories. Makes you want to suit up.

Great book! Haven't laughed so much since reading "Fatso" by old Art Donovan. This makes it pretty clear how college isn't preparing the NFL O linemen these days. Glad I got this book. Great quotes from some of the best O linemen to ever play in the NFL.

Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art, by Mary Gabriel

Review

"A gorgeous and unsettling narrative...Ninth Street Women is supremely gratifying, generous, and lush but also tough and precise -- in other words, as complicated and capacious as the lives it depicts...It's as if once Gabriel got started, the canvas before her opened up new vistas. We should be grateful she yielded to its possibilities."―Jennifer Szalai, New York Times"Ninth Street Women is like a great, sprawling Russian novel, filled with memorable characters and sharply etched scenes. It's no mean feat to breathe life into five very different and very brave women, none of whom gave a whit about conventional mores. But Ms. Gabriel fleshes out her portraits with intimate details, astute analyses of the art and good old-fashioned storytelling."―Ann Landi, Wall Street Journal"Ninth Street Women is a must read...Gabriel seamlessly weaves the intimate and the public, the lives and the art, making us feel we were there...It is a story that is a part of the American story, told here in vivid, meaningful detail, an absolutely pivotal text."―Margaret Randall, Women's Review of Books"Gabriel's fascinating group portrait shimmers with vivid personal detail...She traces their interwoven paths from studio to Cedar Bar to the Eight Street loft known as the Club...Over time, Willem de Kooning outshone Elaine; Jackson Pollock eclipsed Krasner. Key contributions were erased...Gabriel makes sure these major artists who have been written out of history are not forgotten."―Jane Ciabattari, BBC.com"Masterful. Mixing critical insight with juicy storytelling, Mary Gabriel brings five brilliant female painters to the fore of the art revolution that cut a wide swath in postwar America."―Patricia Albers, author of Joan Mitchell: Lady Painter"Gripping and enthralling, Mary Gabriel made me share every turbulent moment of these remarkable women's lives. A magisterial reference, this book will be the definitive text for years to come. It is also the most devastatingly accurate portrayal of five women who had the temerity to call themselves artists in the male-dominated twentieth century."―Deirdre Bair, author of Al Capone: His Life, Legacy, and Legend"I loved every page of this necessary book. At last we see such once-sidelined artists as Joan Mitchell and Elaine de Kooning in depth, and both the telling gossip of their lives and the brave authenticity of their work are thrilling. Mary Gabriel restores the humanist ambition at the core of all the New York painters of this era, whether male or female--the boldness of their risky lives and the seriousness of their noble enterprise."―Brad Gooch, author of Rumi's Secret: The Life of the Sufi Poet of Love"Sheer delight. A richly detailed epic starring not only five heroic female painters, but a supporting cast that defines the entire existential and Beat era, from Frank O'Hara to Billie Holiday to Samuel Beckett. Gabriel's vision of Lee Krasner jazz dancing with Piet Mondrian alone is worth the price of the book. With palpable empathy for the flawed brilliance of her five stars, their jealous foes, and their long-suffering enablers, Gabriel conjures the high-risk paths they chose, what making great art cost their lives, and what they lost and won in the end."―Michael Findlay, director of Acquavella Galleries and author of Seeing Slowly: Looking at Modern Art"A colorful narrative as compelling as a novel. Gabriel brilliantly shows how the women of Abstract Expressionism carved out paths for themselves in an often hostile community, fashioning careers and producing exciting work fully as important as that of their male peers--men whom they befriended, married, bedded, or disdained."―Mary V. Dearborn, author of Ernest Hemingway: A Biography"A fascinating, meticulously researched account of five painters who broke through the gender barriers in the art world of the 1950s. Gabriel is deft at teasing out the behind-the-scenes drama in these women's lives and careers. Essential reading for any student of the period, and of the New York School generally."―David Salle, author of How to See: Looking, Talking, and Thinking About Art

The broad scope of the book ranges over the broad economic, political, and artistic milieu to provide the very relevant context of the personal lives of these artists as well as their art and the art of their friends and contemporaries. The author got this story right. Full disclosure: I knew one of the artists well, Elaine de Kooning, my aunt. In her studio and elsewhere I met many of the figures that appear in this book over many years. I heard their stories, listened to their conversations, and looked at their work. Reading this book was a nostalgic sojourn spent with them again.I received an advance copy of this book from the author. It is a long book and it took me too long to read it, but it was an enjoyable and enchanting spell. Now I feel somewhat disoriented having to leave those now distant legendary decades of artistic innovation in NYC's Village and the Hamptons with the remarkable artists that peopled it. Highly recommended!

Caveat. I am not an artist or an art historian. I'm simply an art enthusiast. Even though I have already read several biographies on the artists covered in this book, this work offered fresh insight, new angles, and superb context. Like other reviewers have said - at first I could not put the book down - but later I did. I found that often I would read a few pages, but the boo aside and just think and reflect. I realized at some point I didn't want the book to end. Like good novels, the characters in the book became as if they were people I knew, and in each case, I knew, it would end. I felt a longing for a time when Art, literature and drama mattered so much that it was featured on the covers of major magazines. Now we live in a time when major magazines are gone, so many young people barely read, and art is assailed as a frivolous activity that should be removed from education in place of more practical matters. I know of the poets, the literary magazines, and the art of the time covered in this book but really have no idea if anything like that exists in this time. There well may be a similar movement now. So in the end when the last page was turned I felt sad,I wanted to story to continue and this great book to keep going. I am a voracious reader - I count this book as one of the truly great books I have read in my lifetime.

Here's an intimate portrait of 5 of the women who created art along side the men in the abstract expressionist movement. While most everyone has heard of Jackson Pollock, how many have heard of his wife Lee Krasner?Or Elaine De Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan or Joan Mitchell? Yet these 5 women struggled, starved, sacrificed and studied along side the giants of the art industry. And they were recognized as artists in their own time.Today, they seem to have been lost along the way. This book shows them as holding their own and even influencing their male contemporaries. This book explains how, where and why they created the art that so many people would dismiss as "something my kid could do". And gives the reader a much better understanding of the reasons and thought processes behind their art.For anyone who wants to "understand Modern Art", this could be a primer. And although it is long, it reads like a juicy novel. There are photos of all the women, some of the men and the paintings mentioned in this book.As a former Art Museum docent , the hardest question for my guests to answer was "Name 5 women artists". After reading this book, YOU'll be able to name these 5 incredible artists and then some!

I don't read books about art -- I look at art. Ninth Street Women is the exception. I couldn't put it down. Three friends said the same thing: It is the best book about art ever written.

I’ve always had a difficult time understanding abstract expressionism. This is the first book I’ve found that provided insight into the makers, their driving ambition, their art practice, and their lifestyle. I may still not appreciate all the artworks but I do have an appreciation for the struggles and the sacrifices and struggles of the artists. While the focus is on the women, the story is much more comprehensive of the time, the places, and the personalities around the whole movement.

Barbara Barrick is reading this book. It is very readable, informative, thorough, and holds my interest completely. This is exactly the kind of information I wanted to read about these artists. It places them within the historical setting as well. I am enjoying the reading, although the book is very heavy to hold.

Very long but worth the wait. Interesting & easy to set down & pick up later. Real women artists are documented in the changing word of American art.
