I first found Sean on Youtube and really liked his archery videos. He mentioned this book on one of them so I decided to order it, because I wanted something I could have in hand to refer to while out at the target. The narrative presentation keeps the reading personal and interesting, and I really like his approach and method to learning archery. He explains how to analyze what you're doing, how it effects your accuracy, and how to correct it. He admonishes patience and repetition, and I agree these are key practice components to becoming a better archer.I like the way the book is divided into sections and personally appreciated his spiritual testimony.

A paleontologist and an artist go on a long road trip around the American West in a dark blue Ford pickup. They write a densely illustrated book “Crusin’ the Fossil Freeway” that is all of the following:1. A primer in geology, a history of fossil discoveries in the West.2. A travelog.3. A picture book of paleo-themed roadside attractions.4. A picture book of fossils.5. A collection of paleo-themed cartoons and surrealistic art.6. A homage to amateur and professional fossil enthusiasts. The paleontologist is Kirk Johnson, chief curator of the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, whoe specialty is paleobotany. The artist is Ray Troll, an Alaskan known for his fish-themed art. Troll he has done lots of paleo-related work over a period of a few decades. In the words of Johnson, Troll “is no photo-realist, he’s a scientific surrealist.” In 1999 Johnson and Troll collaborated on an exhibit at the Denver Museum called “Crusin in the Fossil Freeway.” Part of that exhibit was an old Volvo station wagon called the “Evolvo”, with Charles Darwin at the wheel. This seems to have inspired the idea of taking a real fossil road trip.Associated with the book is a color map designed by Troll, which can be purchased separately as a 4X5 ft poster. It stretches from Washington to North Dakota to the north, and from Arizona to Oklahoma to the south. In this map, one sees the usual major highways, rivers, cities, etc., but each state has several dozen labeled drawings of reconstructed fossil plants and animals from the region, plus roadside attractions. There is also a small drawing of a cheeseburger in each state. A part of the map is shown as a frontispiece for each chapter. Clearly, in the West, fossils are everywhere.I am a big fan of Ray Troll’s work. In 2005, I reviewed “Rapture of the Deep,” which is a compendium of his art, for the Paleontograph. “Crusin’” contains many examples of the type of humorous/surrealistic paleo-themed cartoons he is known for. My favorite is the one captioned: “Have mercy on those who suffer from P.N.S. (Paleo Nerd Syndrome)” The only thing I’m disappointed about is “Cruisin’” is written entirely from the viewpoint of Kirk Johnson. Ray Troll is only mentioned in the third person and only in a semi-disparaging way (which is clearly affectionate teasing since the two are good friends). For instance, Troll is constantly referred to as “fossil-loving, but fossil-blind”, i.e. cannot recognized fossils in front of this nose. I am interested in art, so I would have liked Troll’s explanations about why he drew what he drew, much as was done in “Rapture of the Deep.”On the other hand, there is no doubt but that Kirk Johnson did an excellent job on all the many topics he covered. This book is the perfect gift for your favorite paleo-nerd, even if it is yourself.

Very impressive visually. A beautiful book. Geological explanations are creative and easily understood by non-geologists (example: the pig in page 9). Maps are a bit overcrowded and I was sorry the book did not cover the eastern portion of the country, where I live (Virginia). Localities shown are too far for me to get to. Of course , the eastern portion of the country seems less rich in fossils, (except Pennsylvania?)The book is about a subject that I love, paleontology. My favorite fossils are the ammonites, more so than the dinosaurs. They have aesthetic value, in addition to the scientific value. Of course, dinosaurs are more popular, specially among the younger, but they also take much more work to put together for viewing in museums. The recent find of three triceratops in Wyoming should give this book added value since the authors treat Wyoming sites with special emphasis.

We bought this book to get some ideas about where to visit the area. We are REALLY into paleontology these days and this book is like trilobite candy! The writing is fun for all ages and the illustrations are beautiful and creative. Some say the maps are too busy but that is part of the fun and style of the art.Not sure if we will get the map but the book is worth every penny. Let's put it this way, before I started homeschooling my son, I knew nothing about this and cared less. Now, I see fossils everywhere, we time travel to the late cretaceous and have a huge group of scutosauruses grazing in the backyard!

Kirk Johnson captures the inveterate geekiness of a hard core paleontologist who started young and never veered from his love of rocks or redheads with rock tumblers.Illustrator Ray Troll, the Ketchikan artist who is responsible for all the "Spawn Til You Die" t-shirts and many other fin (sic) art renditions of Alaskan humor, does an impressive job of filling the pages with more stuff than you can possibly absorb. When trying to follow maps of their adventures, I would veer off road (much like my geologist husband is wont to do on similar treks) due to some tricerotops in the way. But, that is the point of the book. The fanciful drawings stoke the imagination, and Johnson's big circle way of writing (start in one place and wander all over to make a bunch of interesting points, to arrive back at an original thought with an fun twist) will make you want to fill your car with dino juice and hit the road for your own rock hound adventure. If you have kids wild for dinosaurs, this could be a fabulous off-beat way for them to experience what it really is like to be a flesh and blood guy who never grows out of it. It may charm them or scare them away, and I'm not about to say which way is best.

a really nice little book, but not intended for beginner

Great book by great authors. I spent a lot of time learning Fortran and I prefer to have tangible books.

For the experienced FORTRAN 77 programmer, this is the best book you can own for learning FORTRAN 90/95. Don't be fooled by its unimpressive size, the content is what's important and the only metaphor I can find is this: the contents of this little jewel are like concentrated acid. I'm not at all surprised the authors of Numerical Recipes in FORTRAN 95 site this book as their favorite reference. This book is not for the faint at heart, but then, what successful programmer is? This rare jewel combined with Adams, Brainard, Martin, Smith, and Wagener's "FORTRAN 95 Handbook" is all the aspiring FOTRAN 90/95 programmer needs. One example of the many gold nuggets I found in this title that I could find mentioned almost nowhere else: Instead of declaring a function as EXTERNAL so that it may be used as an actual argument in a procedure reference, Metcalf and Reid recommend using an interface block in the scope of the procedure reference using the actual function name, and a similar interface block in the referenced procedure (using the dummy argument procedure name), thereby allowing the compiler to envoke all the checking associated with explicit interfaces. Using the EXTERNAL attribute for this scenario does not allow that depth of checking, and, indeed, Chapman makes it seem as if the EXTERNAL statement is required to pass a function name as an actual argument. Adam's et al write that the use of interface blocks makes this use of EXTERNAL effectively obsolescent (p 473).I did have one problem with my edition of "FORTRAN 90/95 Explained", the index was bound incorrectly (the pages were out of sequence).

In my opinion this book gives a thorough, yet concise account of the Fortran 90 programming language and its more recent Fortran 95 revision. Its virtue lies in its unambiguous definition of terms, programming constructs, function definitions etc. It is ideal for the experienced programmer who wants to know how to code a specific task in Fortran 90. It is most definitely not suitable, nor aimed at either the novice programmer or the programmer of the Fortran 66 era; both of whom need a slower, more example and algorithm driven, introduction to the Fortran of the 90's.I have successfully used this book for teaching, but only to experienced Fortran 77 programmers eager to learn about the new language, and with the aid of highly structured lectures and supervised computer tutorial sessions. I would not recommend it for student self study. As an experienced programmer, what I most like about this book is that I can look up a term in the index, be referred to a small number of entries in the text, and rest assured that in those few pages I have all the information I require on that topic. Other Fortran books I have read frequently do not document, or pay scant regard to, important features of the language such as optional arguments to I/O statements or generic function disambiguation. If I were only allowed to keep just one Fortran 90 text book this would be the one.

There are two types of essential books to be on your bookshelves. Books to learn from and books to reference. This book is the essential reference. Once you learn Fortran, this is the book to turn to when you need to know the details of the language.I find myself using this book over and over again for my research project. It's short, concise, absolutely accurate and complete, making it the perfect book to have right next to your keyboard. In response to the 1 star review, this is _not_ the book to learn the language from if you know nothing about Fortran, but it would be a serious mistake not to stock your bookshelf with this gem of a book.

If you are new to Fortran and learn by doing, this is not the book for you. It is difficult to find explainations in one location. For example, when writing out a variable to the screen, you may want spaces put into the output. Where do you find the "coding" for spaces? Well, it's hidden very well in an example 20 pages later from the original text on the "write" statement. Also, I am currently writing code and need to use the 'call' statement. Unfortunately, something as useful as the call statement is hard to find in this book. I have had a difficult time using this book as a reference without having to spend a lot of time going through the whole chapter to find the information I needed. Maybe it just needs to be organized differently.I learn by looking at other people's coding and interpreting and investigating. This book does not lend itself very well to that type of method. Maybe it works for pure programmers, but I am an engineer and need results quickly. I hope this review helps you.

Fortran 90/95 explained by Metcalf and Reid is a reference work that covers systematically all the fundamental concepts in the Fortran 90 and 95 programming language standard. The text is concise, yet it is sprinkled with examples. I consult the book often and usually find quickly what I am looking for.

I bought this book because it was much cheaper than the other titles. Unfortunatly I got what I paid for. It just briefly mentions new features, and if you don't already understand them, you are lost.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* In his foreword, Shakespeare scholar Stephen Greenblatt describes Sendak’s last, posthumously published book as “something rich and strange.” And so it is. Combining lushly beautiful art in the manner of Blake and Fuseli with a text reconfigured from Shakespeare’s Winter’s Tale, Sendak’s richly imagined book offers a magical and mysterious tribute to his beloved older brother, Jack, who died in 1995. The story follows the respective plights of two brothers, Jack and Guy, who are seemingly separated by a new star’s smashing into the earth. Jack is catapulted into a continent of ice and “stuck fast in water like a stone.” Guy, meanwhile, is plunged into the dangerous lair of a bear that threatens to consume him. Will the brothers survive to be reunited in love and peace? Distinguished by its pervasive sense of longing and informed by extraordinary art—some of Sendak’s most beautiful—My Brother’s Book is a celebration of the enduring love of two brothers. One’s first impulse is to marvel at the exquisite art and then to turn to the Shakespearean text to understand how the two seemingly disparate elements harmonize. Inviting reading and rereading, Sendak’s tribute to his brother is also a final tribute to his own genius. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Is there a children’s author whose name has been more enduring and recognizable than the late Sendak’s? Grades 10-12. --Michael Cart

Although this book was written not only for Sendak's brother, but also his long-time lover/partner, it is as a brother that I wish to comment. My older brother -- my only living sibling -- is locked in the cruel arms of Parkinson's Disease, like Jack in this book, he is "a snow image stuck fast in water like stone." For me, it was nearly impossible to read this beautiful book without thinking of the bond that exists between brothers -- he is the only person still living who has known me all my life and visa versa. The images in this book of the two brothers thrown apart by life with separate paths, yet uniting in the end embracing one another are so authentic.I'm not sure that this is a book that young children will warm to, although the theme of final resolution, enduring love, and safety even with adversity are comforting. But I am sure that this book will become a classic within many families as brothers age and ancient bonds assume new power. This is a book to share with your brother, then to buy another copy to read and re-read yourself.

The preview led me to expect a more spectacular book than this turned out to be. My Brother's Book is a beautiful small book which sits in one's hand comfortably and it will have particular appeal to those who appreciate William Blake's poetic and artistic style. It is an intensely private and personal testament which makes it rather obscure reading and thus a tad unsatisfying in total. However, I recognize it as a classic work and a sensitive insight into the great writer that is Maurice Sendak.

I gave this book as a gift to someone who lost his brother. They had a fully engaged and active camaraderie when the one who died retired. There is an affirmation of the brother and the mystery of fraternity. I am glad I found this to give.

I was looking for something close to Where the Wild Things Are and I did not seem to get it in this book. Still the drawings were fantastic.

This small book was pushed after Maurice Sendak's death. It is a fitting honor to a great artist and a great thinker. The watercolor drawings are gorgeous to look at and provocative. Buyers should know, however, that this is not a children's book. It is a serious look at a serious painter and his influences, including Shakespeare and William Blake. This is the sort of book that makes one realize that there are joys in books that cannot be replicated by electronic readers. This is a book to hold and love.

Wanted the last book Maurice Sendak wrote. It was a bit quirky but I like quirky.

maurice sendak was a one of a kind artist

A precious gift for yourself or someone else. A gem filled with lovely Sendak images that make you want to just sit and hold it. As an artist I find his paintings inspiring. As a human being, I find his words inspiring, even though some of them make absolutely no sense to me... the emotion behind them does.
